Someone used to do a Smokey bacon flavour. I thought it was John Baker but it's not on his site, so either he's not doing it anymore or I'm wrong. Anyone help please ?

I know Richworth done a boiled ham flavour and I believe ready-made at one time. Might be worth looking at the food industry. Butchers obviously use some sort of flavouring in there smokey bacon.

Not trying to be alarmist but if you like that sort of smokey flavour maybe consider buying some in bulk or checking properly into this as they may become unavailable very shortly.
The EU are looking to ban artificial smoke flavours. I found this when I was trying to find Golden Wonder Smokey Bacon crisps online. As a aside, I recently tried Seabrooks limited edition SB and they taste nothing at all like GW and if that's the future
I can't see flavour houses continuing production for limited useage, if they can even get the smoke product, but if they can I guess you could have some made in bigger amounts.

Could you use liquid smoke as an alternative? The Stubbs one is very good 👍

I can't see why not, bit of experimenting with a ham or whatever flavour, good shout.
A decade or so ago I was into BBQing and preserving, making bacon etc, we used the Colgin natural smokes, they are lovely, my fav is the Pecan.
I can only see a shift to the naturals, I hope if they do 'economies of scale' will bring the price down as they aint cheap!

You are correct, but not entirely, they're not "artificial" as such (in fact the artificial classification no longer exists), they are flavourings made with actual smoke components (8 of them) and yes will be banned by the EU, likely with a phase out period... I'm currently having to deal with this change at work.
There are other "clean" smoke flavourings, which are smoke flavours but without the smoke components, and on food are just declared as "flavourings" where as the actual ones can be (but don't have to be) declared as "smoke flavourings"

It'll be interesting to see the changes if indeed it's noticable to the purchaser, if you're privvy to that and can say, it'd be interesting to know what you think. I'm sure I read last week that the Irish and possibly Danish are very unhappy about it, big curing industries, bacon etc.

I have no idea on those industries, as I work in dry ambient, but for snacks etc like smokey bacon crisps, the flavour houses will definitely make matched clean flavours. For bait, it'll all come down to volume, I'd guess most small bait companies, apart from the big guys, don't have the buying power for major flavour houses to develop bespoke flavours for them, and are rather choosing from 'off the shelf' options.
I'm not quite sure what you mean re 'off the shelf', components of flavours, or flavours themselves. I watched a vid from RG baits a while ago, they were at a 'flavour manufacturer' having a bespoke made, so maybe it will be possible. Smoked meat flavours used to be very popular with Carpers in Europe, maybe they'll use a generic smoke, time will tell I guess.
