I'm on the look out for a light retractable or travel rod to fit in a roll on suitcase to take on holiday.
Will only be for slinging light metal and rubber lures at fish in harbours and from the beach.
Any suggestions? Not fussed about brand will be paired up with 8lb braid on a 3k sized reel

I've got a Daiwa Legalis travel rod. Not retractable but 9 piece and can be used at 9 or 10 foot.
Have used it but not caught on it yet, seems a good rod for the money and packs down to fit in hand luggage.

Daiwa crosscast xt 9ft 2.75. Great rods for the money.

Have a look at the Daiwa and Shimano travel spin rods, I have one of each, superb and made for the job
I know Shimano do a telescopic one too that is tiny

ESP have just released a 6ft retractable in there quickdraw range. Not to sure on the test? Seems like an ideal travel rod. Probably a bit more top end mind.

Bought one for Crete few weeks ago and it comes in a hard tube and decent action. Light enough to float fish with too. Decent finish and action. Cant fault.

I have sets of Nash Dwarfs in 6ft in both 1lb and 2lb test curve ... I really enjoy using them on my boat but not sure if they are still available.

I would really consider what you want it for, for lures and spinners you need a spinning type rod, they have a flicky tip and some back bone made for lures and can handle hard fighting fish. Consider your lure weights too, heavy ones for distance and some of the poppers are light. A carp type rod would be usless for lure fishing unless they were massive, flip side you have it in your hand all the time so weight really does matter. I find you can also get away with float set ups for mullet etc and a floater set up if required

I take a pair of Freespirit CTX Travel in 9' . . .they are 4 piece and paired up with SS2600s. . .bit posh for lure flinging tbf but I also use them for jigging / ledgering squid etc off the harbours.
Action on the 9's is about 2.75 and they do a 10' which annoyingly packs down smaller (5x piece) but is 3lb+ tc so a bit OTT . . .
I stayed away from the telescopics as the CTX may end up as stalking / snide rods in the future . . I have them rigged up as 2x piece when I unpack so they're ready to go

Check out the weights mate, you want one that will cast up to 10 - 35 grams max. for normal sized lures. Bigger rods you will struggle to get range unless you are using bigger lures. For mepps type spinners ideally you want lighter than mentioned but I find you can get away with the one mentioned
Mine are multi piece, they are longer pack down sizes. I have an old Shimano beast master STC 7 or 9 foot options and a Daiwa saltist which is a better quality rod just a little heavier casting weights, use my Shimano the most

They have indeed .... Great to see a 2.5lb and a 2.75lb added to the range in 4k version. If i need another set of 10ft retractables these will be what i get

I hadn't thought about a bit of fluoro as a leader makes sense.
I've got 150m of 8lb braid which I'm planning on loading on a Sonik 4k specialist reel for starters
I've bought the smallest paddle tails I could find, so just a rod to sort and forceps (again thanks I would never have thought of that!), then I can practice a little around the Camber in Portsmouth before my hols in the summer

Using a fluoro leader gives you a little more scope on the braid lb age, having loads of different strains is great, but not when spare spools cost a bit...lol.
I use a 2500 Stradic for LRF with 12lb spider wire, fluoro leader/hooklink will depend on what I'm going after. I usually take a few different small spools of Supplex, start of higher and if no joy go lower in BS. I use a 4000 reel for heavier braids.
Think those paddle tails are about 30mm..maybe a little more

I would check the weights in the paddle tails, if they are 5 grams you will probably want a lighter rod if that's all your fishing. I fish a very of lures, some up to 30-40 grams for distance from the rocks etc.
