Ok so maybe I'm an old git now.
I don't have matching luggage..
I don't have a seat for every day of the week....
I don't own a bait-boat....
When i do a 72 hour session I ONLY take the one barrow of gear...
I survive only on Coffee, Chocolate, Noodles and Pasta (if im feeling flash i might have some chipolatas and beans) But certainly not rump steak with all the trimmings....
I don't take a generator..
My Bivvy doesn't have a built in wood burner.
My Bivvy is big enough for me (and aint designed to accommodate everyone else on the lake should they all pop round together.)
I don't take a personal portaloo with me
Nor do i take an extra tent to put up special as an External ****house...
I don't have the most modern alarms but occasionally, just occasionally they wake me up by going BLEEEEEEEEP...
My bed chair is good enough, but its no so wide i can roll over 4 times before i fall out.
I'm old enough to remember when Northwestern rods were the Mutts Nutts
I'm old enough to remember Churner fishing with a 50p piece on the spool over a tin tray
Im old enough when a bedchair was actually a red sunlounger
I'm old enough to remember tin foil on the line....
I remember Mk1 BaitRunners ....
I remember the ****ty Heron Bite alarms that would give off a continuous screeeccch if you so much as looked at them funny..
But ... up to now Wrap Sticks ..........????

Having dismissing these weird poles sticking out of the ground in everyone's swim as just another Gimmick to catch us and force us to part with our hard earned,...
I finally invested in a set of Summit Wrap Sticks (YES The expensive ones....But they ticked all the boxes that i wanted and why not..)
So I set about figuring out what the young whippersnappers actually do with them..
Fooking genius just a simple, but fookin genius idea...
No more waking up at 6am to rebait; Only to find the rod you had the fish on at 3.00 am is now 10ft up a tree on the opposite bank...
Now i aint the worlds best caster... but now i have good confidence every time that when I hear my rig go PLOP in the pitch dark, Its somewhere dammn close to my baited area.
Im certain because of them i put more fish on the bank hands down.
Back in the 80s people on my club would of doubtless laughed down their sleeve at me.. But it would of been my alarms screaming all night not theirs...

Like you I was old fashioned ,walking the lines out along the path etc

I used insulation tape for years with no real bother. Have the wrap sticks but the line twist is the only point that pisses me off

Do you use the Clutch \ Baitrunner to dump line....?
If so that's your problem !! Use an open bale restrict line with your hand on the spool

I just put some tape around the top of some banksticks.
Works fine. I did buy some cheapo wrap sticks but haven't needed to switch to them.
I was always using tape on my line, but have had it slip occasionally and then I'd clip up and overcast

I still can't bring myself to use them.
I love my long walks down the bank to a fixed clip mark. After a bite I do it with a hop & skip.

I don't have specific wrap sticks either. If and when I do use the method it's out of necessity ie in the situation they were originally developed..in tight swims/down an embankment/no suitable clearing to walk lines out.
I do use a boat quite often but when unable to, distance sticks are a massive edge. Large Advanta set, cheap as chips but do the job.
Was thinking 'grumpy old ****' whilst reading the beginning, but ended well balanced haha. Welcome to the 21st century.

When i used to fish at horseshoe back in the noughties we would walk out our lines to a stick or stone.
When on the Whitney bank the ground was quite hard so we'd find a large obvious stone.
It was such fun watching a mate reel in after a blank night cos he'd been five yards short of the clear area and had spent the night in the middle of a jungle of canadian.
Weird the way stones can move under cover of darkness.
I'd still tape my lines as a back up, and to prevent having to walk them out if pissing down for a recast.

I used cable ties to branches/bushes etc etc
Tippex & chuck it back in the lake, reel in til I found it

How are you winding the wraps back onto the reel?
If you're allowing the line to fall slack from the wrap sticks whilst keeping tension onto the spool by gripping the line in front of the reel, then that is almost certainly the cause of the issue - it's pushing any twist towards the final few wraps...
The best way to wind the line back on is to use the rod tip to keep the tension onto the reel, keeping a slight bend in the tip as if winding in a big lead, and moving the rod tip back and forth between the sticks... You kind of go about a foot or so to the outside of each wrap stick whilst keeping the tension onto the line the whole time... This replicates winding in...
There's a bit of a technique to it and it looks a bit daft but trust me, there's the twist issue, right there.

You could have a point there, I was thinking it could be slack. I don't religiously go from side to side right to the end with the rod and kind of hold it higher up so it comes off the sticks easier, albeit I do alternate the rod to either side when winding back on. Next time I use them I will try that

Once I have measured out my distance and marked my line, I just hold my rod tip high and wind in ocassionally moving it left or right if the line snags etc and the line usually come free from the sticks loose and I just hold it between finger and thumb to add a bit of tension as it goes on the spool and I don't get twist

I use the rod straight in the air method when winding back onto the reel and have never once experienced line twist. I've only used wrap sticks for about 10 years, but I feel that's a long time to not have any issues, so I'm sticking with it.

I don't use them but shop bought are not cheating. I've never heard of that one before.
Doesn't matter if you make your own, use freezer or get them from the shelf in my opinion

If a person cares what others think fair enough, their business, me, I go fishing for myself couldn't care a less how others view my captures or what I use, they can keep their negativity to themselves
