I'm after some big pit reels which will only be used likely once a year in France ( have some mini big pit for UK lakes I fish)
Ideally max budget of £300, happy to buy used or new just looking for suggestions of what are some good ones to look at.
Are daiwa Crosscast 5000 qd any good? As I know someone selling some, almost seem too cheap though at somewhere around £200 for 3, makes me question if they are decent!
Don't really want to spend more than that due to how little they will be used.

I have the crosscast 45 SCW 5000 reels, they're a level below emcast in the Daiwa range and have been great. I've had them 3 years now and working really well. Good value reel and as with most Daiwa stuff built well.

Another vote for Okuma , might be slightly out of your price range but the Obsidian 12000 is one hell of a reel.

Another shout for the Okuma 8K. A awesome reel for the money.
For the price, there an fantastic, solid, well built option that are IMHO better than the Shimano & Daiwa offerings.
Hold loads of line, mega cranking power for the long long rods. Great clutch. Superb build quality as well.
Cant recommend them enough.

If I was in the market for some new big pits, I'd seriously be considering the Penn Affinity III 7000's. Apparently bulletproof reels.

You should be abe to find a good set of Penn affinity 8000 Ltd, second hand for that money and still have some change for line.

Source some 2nd Hand Tournies (5000/6000T) . . .look after them, and never buy another Big pit again!
Alternatively jtcarper on here is selling 3x Infinities for £325 . . . heavy but again if well serviced will last you for every conceivable current and future French adventure!

just swapped from some Shimano xtd 5500 to Cast'izm 25qd.
Ive used the Shimano in France a few times and on small lakes they are absolutely fine but last trip was fishing at a fair distance with 4/5 oz leads on a bigger lake and it just didn't have the cranking power on retrieve.
And the castism are slightly smaller than the Shimano, perfect for my little syndicate lake but I don't think for France ( lake dependant)
Will likely go with some Okuma, had been looking at the obsidian previously and sometimes see them on ebay deals so will try them or the 8k if not

The Okuma 8k is 743 grams.
Nice reel though and does have the tapered 45mm for casting.
If you're bothered by weight, try get the Obsidian.

And I've done the exact opposite to you and think it's the best decision ever. That being said, in line with the budget quoted, 2nd hand Penn Affinities would be ideal, I have them on my other set of rods and in the years I've had them they've never missed a beat
