OK so I've been out of the uk carp scene for a few decades now and terminoligy has certainly changed a lot, if someone can enlighten me on some of the following It would be much appreciated.

New version of "old school" (because I don't get it)

Euro rats

I've got a bit of an idea on some of them, but they seem to be used in many varying ways and context's

If anyone has any another's I'd be interested to hear them

A noddy - an inexperienced angler

I thought 'slab' was a reference to a big bream.

Yeah round here a slab is a big bream :

A noddy is a bell end who doesn't know what they're doing. Not just someone new to fishing.

And don't forget the punishers who have no idea, but rather than trying to figure it out like a Noddy would, they want to know what rig, what bait, what spot, who made your rods, etc

Been in and around this game we call Carp fishing since the the late 80s. And I've only ever heard a few of those expressions..

A Noddy. Think we've all been guilty of being one of those at one time or another.
Lake Slasher. Pass on that one... Someone who pisses in the water a lot? Maybe.
A Slab. Big old Bream, init?
Wannabe. Seen plenty of those in my time. Carp fishing seems to attract them.
At all costers. Can't sat I've heard that one?
Euro Rats. Again new one on me me.

Agree on the rest, but if someone asked me who made my rods, I would take it as a compliment and recommend the builder. Unless it was followed by "They're crap and you woz robbed".

The meaning of the term "Noddy" seems to have changed meaning since the 60's and 70's. Back then it referred to other anglers, not those fishing for carp, but those fishing for anything else and would sit there holding their rods all day on their baskets and looked like "Noddy" fishing. It had nothing to do with their competence etc.

ie, you would often here comments like "There is a Noddy in my swim", " There's a load of Noddies on the pond." Etc

Basically, a "Noddy" was someone fishing for anything else other than carp..

Somewhere in one of my old carp books from that period, their is a glossary of terms, and "Noddy" is amongst the terms, but i don't know which one.

Make you right. An angler fishing for anything but Carp. But as everyone seems to fish for Carp these days...

Remember seeing a pic of the late Rod Hutchison with a t shirt with "Noddy" written across it.

Noddy was a term used for match men sat on their boxes or so called amateurs. Most of the matchmen I know would fish the socks off 95% of the noddies sat in a tent lobbing 3oz

Noddy to me was someone who appeared to not be very good at fishing. We also had instant carp anglers just add water. For people who just went straight into carping and had all the gear but no idea

A noddy - 100% Agree with Zacks description of its origin

This has since morphed to apply to -

a) any angler that's inexperienced (all species/mainly carp)
b) a carp angler that's incompetent (makes a noise / hammers in bivvy pegs / casts outside normal boundaries / has zero etiquette)
c) a carp angler that has every piece of top tackle but has little experience in using it (see wannabe below)
d) a novice carp angler that uses shoddy / cheap / old / mis-matching gear
e) a carp angler who's actually extremely competent but uses shoddy / cheap / old / mis-matching gear
f) any carp angler that has 100% matching luggage (especially camo)
g) a carp angler that uses ready tied rigs (unless they have eyesight probs in which case they are oldskool)
h) a carp angler that uses tech/baits boats (when they can cast to the spot)
i) any carp angler with zero OCD - eg wonky buzzbars & pods / un-taught bivvies / messy swims with sh*te everywhere / white pillows / lager cans mixed with pellet strewn across their bedchairs etc
j) Anyone one with a PB under 20lb - these days anyone with a PB under 30lb (!!! lol)
k) Anyone that uses baitrunner reels (irrespective of angling ability)
l) Anyone who uses a pod (irrespective of angling ability)
m) Anyone that sets up a separate cooking station with its own shelter for a 24hrs session in the UK
n) Any solo angler that uses a 2-3man bivvy for a 24hr / Day session (irrespective of angling ability)
o) Anyone that brings an ugly missus to the lake (usually with item m above)
p) Anyone that brings their kids to the lake
q) Anyone that brings either o) or p) to the lake and squeezes them into a 1man JRC bivvy
r) These days - JRC products in general . . .in fact any acronym based brands (OMC etc) with the exception of ESP
s) Any angler that attends a Carp show / event wearing any item of fishing gear /clobba
t) I could go on indefinitely . . .(ps Item h def applies to me so I am a nod by default!)

Lake slasher - No idea

New version of "old school" (because I don't get it) Spelt old skool - any established carp angler / style / tackle from the previous era of their own demographic ie

a) New Carper (18-25yrs / 2024) - anyone older than themselves is old skool eg Peck/Dove/Stokes etc
b) 2010's (30-35yrs / 2024) - anyone older than themselves is old skool eg Hearn/Lane etc
c) 1990's (45-55yrs / 2024) - anyone older than themselves is old skool eg Maddocks/Hutchy/Mc Donald etc
d) 1970s' (70yrs+ / 2024) - anyone older than themselves (and most likely dead) is old skool eg Walker/Arbery etc
e) Interestingly - anyone younger than their own demographic could be considered a noddy . . .irrrespective of their facebook / insta pages / general carpy fame (see item 1f)

A slab - A Bream

Wannabe - A Noddy (see item 1c)

At all costers - Will do anything including cheating (hormones) / lying / blagging / poaching / spending inordinate amount of time to catch a slimy fish whilst ignoring kids/missus/colleagues/personal appearance/any other grown up responsibilities . . .

Euro rats - No idea- but they're probably either French or maybe those that fish Rainbow exclusively for 3weeks per year and nowhere else . . .?

A) Noddy - How you start off, but more aimed towards real new starters to whom watercraft and ettiquette is an anathema. As stated was a derivative of match , pleasure or non carp angler or baseball cap wearers (True)

B) All the gear no idea- the Noddy (seeA) who purchases a tackle shop worth of gear in an attempt to not look like a Noddy but unwittingly stands out like a sore thumb the moment he opens his mouth.

C) Slab - Large Bream as is this what you catch on your new all singing and dancing gear (read “all the gear no idea reference”). Slabs can be caught throughout your angling journey but are particularly prevalent at Noddy stage (see A) just to undermine your non existent confidence.

D) At All Coster - Not one I'm familiar with as a term, but obviously someone part way through their learning curve is so desperate to catch they will fish unsafely to get their ultimate goal. Known as ****s.

E) Punisher - someone just above noddy level who thinks they are gifted or who thinks knows a water like the back of their hand. Doesn't realise they come across as a noddy (see A) and a grade A **** ( see D)

F) Wannabe -Someone of below average ability ( just above Noddy level) who wants to become famous. Also a comes across to all as a **** ( see C & D above). Loves to namedrop ‘Famous Anglers' that you've never heard of as a matter of routine.

G) Euro Rat - Never heard of it but there again I'd never heard of the description ‘Unit' until a 17 year old on his first trip to France used it to describe a scraper 30. Maybe this is a Euro Rat ( or Brat) but maybe just refer to(D,E &F) and he's just a ****.

H)Old School -Geberally a respectful term given to some old duffer, but can be used in a scornful way by Noddy's (see A), Punishers (see E), or Wannabees (see F) who turns up at a lake with not the latest tackle but good, well used gear which has stood the test of time. Most of it has names of makers long past or if still known, discontinued. Tend to keep themselves to themselves, move slowly, think slowly and are not exciteable. Not at all savvy with blogs, vlogs, Facebook, latest trends, Wannabees ( see F). Tend to fish throughout the year including winter. Eat decent food on the bank and copious amounts of tea or coffee. Leave lakes quietly so it's only years later you hear they have rinsed it. They have normally gone through many hats ( bucket,floppy,bobble etc) and gone for a baseball or flat variety (see A)

I) Old Skool - Modern day version of Old School ( see H) but without the experience of the afore mentioned. Tend to emulate Old School (see H) but do it by buying what they think is old School tackle (see H). Buy tackle that Old School anglers (seeH) has used and decided is crap for huge amounts, including really battered and oily blackened kettles made of aluminium that Old School anglers ( see H) have abandoned as being an Alzheimer's risk. Can usually be identified by Vass waders ( twice as heavy as Goretex equivalents and sweaty) and using with only one shoulder strap. and unsuitable heavy ,loose weave jumpers and knitted hats ( see A& H) the variety that makes them look like ****s(see D, E &F) Keeps OldSchool angler ( see G) in bait by buying their old gear at prices higher than original retail prices. Old School ( see G) think Old Skool ( see H) are stupid ****s( see D,E,F & G).

No idea what a Lake Slasher is a to be honest I'm perfectly at ease with that

Back in the day the choice of headgear was a serious business as it defined you as a carper. Baseball caps were worn by Matchmen so were automatic Noddy (see A) gear and no self respecting carper would wear them. The early CarpWorld magazines had various references to this - “ some baseball cap wearing Noddy set up next to me and spooked the fish” etc etc.

Somewhere along the line they became mainstream, only to replaced by ‘Beanie' style hats for ‘Old Skool' ( see I) anglers as part of their ‘uniform'. By this time sufficient years had passed to let Old School (see H) to adopt the baseball cap without undue stigma of yesteryear as they are very practical, unless worn backwards then just refer to ****s (see D,E,F &G)

Always been a bit of a flat cap wearer even in me mid teens. Wanted a bit of a tweed number worn by the likes of Bill Quinlan and a few other anglers I looked up to at the time. But being young with no Money had to make do with a waxed cotton barbour one I was given by a friend of me old man's ( wish I still had it ) normally paired up with an ex british army DPM smock ala Jack Hilton pair of old jeans. And what ever pair of old Adidas trainers I deemed battered enough to wear bankside. Looked like I new what I was doing anyway..
