Any feedback on this jacket please thinking it might be to hot like the sj 9 or is it not to hot it would be used for autumn winter fishing
I use the torrent and really like it. Don't think it's a red hot jacket. But certainly keeps you warm. I wear a thermal top, thin buffalo softie jacket and my coat and never been cold.
Gone to thermal salopettes this year to keep the legs warmer, so should be good to go.

It's basically a waterproof SJ6. The Torrent Extreme is the equivalent of the SJ9 (slightly warmer in fact).

What's the sizing like Tony? I'd have to order online so no chance of trying on prior to buying.
Are they more accurate than the Fortis stuff, cus their stuff is all over the place.

All Snugpak stuff is a bit all over the place with sizing, including the Fortis jobbies. Luck of the draw mate. I had to return 2 SJ9's to get one that fitted really well. With the Torrent I was lucky first time.

I have the original one, it's a superb jacket. The armpit vents work a treat at regulating temps so you don't sweat. I very rarely feel the need for anything other than a t-**** under it. It very much isn't waterproof though. If I lost mine I'd not question buying the new waterproof one.

I ordered the torrent it's come anyone know what does torrent wgte mean is this different than a standard torrent
Well first impression is it doesn't seem that warm compared to a sj6 I tried on while back it doesn't seem there's a lot of padding got the impression it's more of a spring autumn jacket can't see it be any good for winter or is it me happy to be wrong

The snugpak is a lot of money for only 10000mm hh. I was looking around for awhile and went for a schoffel smock with 20000mm hh. You'd be better off getting a ridgeline for that money.

20k is overkill for a jacket imo.
No-one walks round 20 metres underwater worried about water seeping through the weave of their jacket. Even 10k is more than needed.

It just seems silly to me to be taking off a 20k HH jacket to get into my 5k HH Lo Pro to stay dry. Now I agree that you need more in a jacket than a shelter, but if you consider what the hydrostatic head rating actually means, most of it is specs for specs sake imo (for fishing anyway).
I have a Torrent at 10k and a Goretex jobbie which is almost 30k. In terms of performance, there is no difference. They both keep you dry.
Maybe for skiing 20k is the one, but for skiing you end up on your a*se in frozen water several time a day.

Agree HH / breathability rating is nonsense for most carp fishing situations as we are either under a brolly / in a bivvy - unless you are a match angler genuinely sitting out in all weathers for 5hrs you need a balance of waterproofness / warmth dependent on the season.
Whats more key is drying speed and static warmth; the more a jacket can shrug off and the quicker it dries in between the next downpour / the warmer and or cooler the jacket when you are not pumping blood through your veins whilst sitting on your *rse the better . . . .if a jacket does both then that's a perfect balance IMO

The HH comes more into play when leaning, kneeling and sitting for clothing, a lot more pressure is being put on the material - bivvies and shelters shouldnt really need to be as much. But depends where you are
But if its too cold outside for the sweat to evaporate it will condense inside and youll get wet that way.
In reply to Post #29
I have to agree with you on this, wearing a garment puts stress on the material at certain points. More so if you are carrying a rucksack. The pressure on the water at that time will be significantly higher than on a bivvy in the rain. Breathability is important if you are actually sitting out in the rain when match fishing for example . HH stuff is primarily designed for that.

Resurrecting an old thread rather than start a new one...
I've been looking at a new jacket for the colder weather, I've currently got a Sleeka Elite but find it a bit short in the Arms and it's obviously not waterproof.
Been looking at the Snugpak Torrent, Fortis Tundra or potentially going for a Patagonia of some sort, I really like their gear, maybe the Isthmus Parka.
Essentially I'm after a jacket I can sit around under the brolly in so warm but also an element of waterproof too so I can walk to my swim in it or get set up, potentially play a fish etc
I've got the Snugpak Salopettes to pair with this jacket and would most of the time be wearing long sleeved t-shirt and my trusty Aran Jumper.

I've had the torrent extreme for around 2 year's now and love it, very warm and waterproof, probably too warm for being active in,has underarm vent zips if it does get a bit too warm, but for static fishing situation its ideal for me, not too long so not sitting on it in the chair so to speak
One tiny gripe is its tight if you try to zip up right to the top around your chin but it's so warm anyway that's not really required.

How do they fit in this respect?

My torrent is great. It's got a slightly extended back, coupled with salopettes you won't get a back draft. I'd say size up due to other layers as the padding is ample.

I have the Torrent, sizes are pretty true to size, apart from the zip being a bit fiddly ( might be just my jacket as a design fault ) I can't fault the jacket really. For it's size and thickness it's extremely warm, use it mostly for winter lure fishing from a punt or autumn / early spring cold nights carp fishing ( don't carp fish over winter) but it would be too hot for wandering the banks I think unless it was in minus temperatures

I've had a torrent for a few years now and don't find it that warm either. Its a good coat if you're mobile but I think I run a bit colder than most. I tend to use it if the weather is cold and wet and I want to stay mobile and will be moving swims. And yep, the zip is fiddly, much like the zips on the techlite sleeping bag. Doesn't feel that robust but hasn't failed yet.
If fishing fairly static I stick to my snugpak sleeka softie and sleeka salopettes with goretex waterproofs over the top. Never been cold or got wet using that combination. I also have a pair of the fortis / snugpak tundra salopettes... warm but totally crap when it comes to being waterproof... These have been consigned to the back of the wardrobe.

I have the torrent extreme and I also run colder than most after losing more than 10 kg. I didn't try the coat in very cold weather I must add. But I was looking into buying the Fortis Tundra salopettes but now I read your story, I won't haha. I also have the Fortis Marine Jacket but I now also worry that won't be so waterproof as I thought, as that used the same fabric as the Tundra, I think.
In the past I had the Snugpak Sasquatch (not waterproof). Very warm jacket!

Snugpak don't make the Fortis Tundra salopettes.
I actually use the Tundra (salopettes) now and find they're as warm as the Snugpak jobbies. The waterproofing might not be world class but it's miles better than the Snuggys' which have nothing.

My mistake, the Fortis ones then. Either way, waterproofing was poor for the money paid for them (my opinion only). That's why I went back to the snugpak sleeka & salopettes with goretex waterproofs over the top. I have found this to be far superior for my needs.

First impression was that it is a lot thinner than expected, tried it on and the fit was good, even with my Jumper underneath. It was literally a quick try on but it did feel very warm.
I'll be doing a few work nights the next couple of weeks so will give it a go and report back.

I have a snugpak torrent, a fortis marine outer shell and a fortis fj6.
The marine jacket is a lot more waterproof than the torrent and the fj6 is a lot warmer than the torrent, i use the fj6 for fishing and the marine liner over the top if i need a waterproof layer, i much prefer the layer system as i can remove the outer layer to sit under brolly etc without wetting chair.
I wear the torrent for dog walking from this time of year onwards, my walks are nearly all hour plus walks in rain, the rain does stop beading and soaks into the jacket it hasnt come through the hood or back of the jacket yet but the cuffs and sleeves really soak it up and make it uncomfortable to wear, the jacket also takes a while to dry out where as the water just beads off my marine outer jacket, the zip on the torrent can also be a bit fiddly in use

I have the torrent and find it adequately warm down to 0 but i wish I'd gone for the extreme although this is probably a metabolic related issue, i do love the cut and fit of the torrent though and it seems excellent so far in a downpour, i also have a fortis tundra that i ordered in large same as the torrent but its overall a much larger jacket with substantially more insulation but it make me look like a little fat pudding so i always opt for the torrent

Is the Extreme significantly warmer than the SJ9? Does anyone know?
How do Tundras compare to the Extreme? Both are similarly priced but Id of thought Snugpac stuff to actually be reliable.

When I touch the fabric of the Tundra, I feel like it's softer and less durable when compared with the Torrent (Extreme). Warmth wise they are about the same I think, if I go by thickness of insulation only.

I've no idea on comparison on the sj9 but I've had a torrent extreme for 3 or 4 year's now and I've never been cold in it. I live in Scotland and have used it right through winter without issue. If getting active at all I just go down to a t shirt or base layer below it and zip down the underarm vents.
I believe from memory snugpack describe it as rated to -17⁰c.

I have both. I would say the Extreme is maybe a bit warmer but not significantly (I don't think it's possible that anything could be significantly warmer than the SJ9 tbh, but I guess some feel the cold more than others).
Tundra wise I have the salopettes but not the jacket. In terms of quality the Tundra are better than I expected. As good as the Snugpak salopettes for sure.

Hi Guys,
Just a few more thoughts. Fortis's waterproof Triflex material is great - I have the Marine Jacket and Marine Liner. The Triflex is a far nicer feel than my equivalent 3 layer Goretex, and roughly half the price. I don't yet have the Tundra salopettes but will likely get those - suprised to hear of waterproofing issues but the Tundra fabric is a 2 layer Triflex rather than the 3 layer on the Marine jacket. Haven't heard of any waterproofing issues with the Tundra jacket though, which is the same 2 layer fabric as the outer?
The issue I have with both the Snugpack and Fortis products (excluding the Fortis Marine Jacket and Liner) are the necks and hoods. To me an insulating or combi insulating/waterproof in the case of the Tundra jacket should have a high neck, capable of comfortably zipping up to the chin and a hood that fully covers the head and face when cinched down from 2 points of adjustment (3 is generally overkill). None of these products currently do that. My other outdoor insulating layers, Montane, Rab and even Buffalo (Buffalo hoods could do with a wire peak and a bit more space) do that job better. On a really cold day (yes we still get a few!) I like the option of being able to cinch everything down and stand or sit out in it, rather than being tucked away in a zipped up bivvy!
I do like the idea of a burly winter all in one coat like the Tundra but I've yet to find one from any manufacturer, at any price point (even ridiculous ones) that hits the mark. I agree with the earlier comments that while 20k+ hydrostatic head may seem overkill, it's helpful to have and water saturation takes longer/beading seems better, thus quicker to dry. I've tried the Rab Valiance on before and it didn't seem that warm, certainly not vs the Tundra and also I'm not that keen on using down in damp UK conditions even with a waterproof outer, imo synthetics are better.
Montane have finally started using Primaloft Gold (Gold Active plus) so a couple of warm insulating layers worth a look are the Fortes XT and also the Rab Xenair Alpine. Arcteryx last season made the excellent but more pricy and bulky Nuclei SV Parka (Coreloft rather than Primaloft) but you'd struggle I think to get a waterproof layer over it (excepting expedition spec Goretex) whereas you'd get a regular sized waterproof over the former 2.
Buffalo Special 6 Shirt and Trousers I've had since the early 90's. They serve a specific purpose ie: next to skin or with thin base layer and are best for active use. I still throw on the shirt in autumn but it's really not warm on it's own and I far prefer a wool base layer and a synthetic or light fleece and synthetic insulating layer(s)
