I'm not sure whether posting something about the murder of an angler, who was bivvied up on the Thames is okay with the forum rules? Hence the title of the thread.
If not then please remove.
If okay, then a YouTube search for "Killer at The Crime Scene S01E03" might be of interest,
RIP to the angler concerned.

This is every solo anglers worst nightmare fishing public areas; middle aged man vs three brainwashed lads - he should have clocked them on arrival and fished elsewhere or scarpered at the first sense of aggro; easier said than done I'm sure as they made him feel comfortable before sucker punching him etc
Lord of the flies mentality - kids and knives with zero sense of responsibility in their actions and no respect for anyone even themselves; you can blame their parents / society / whoever but I fear its getting worse and on that basis they should be jailed indefinitely or at least up to an age where it becomes impossible for them to harm others ever again . . .

Don't think a monkey fist / hammer is going to help in a 3 vs 1 when the assailants have knives and in a compromised woodland space next to a deep river; even the most adept at unarmed combat wouldn't stand a chance . . .might get a few cursory blows in but that's about it; three pure knockouts with zero return damage in the process - very doubtful

Being street wise has jack to do with being on your guard; best form of defence is to remove yourself from the situation in the first place. Even 1v1; defending yourself from a knife wielded with intent is stupid with a very low % of any success - unless you have a katana / shotgun in which case its you that's doing life . . .lose lose situation

As scary these incidents are they are extremely rare , you've got more chance of being injured or dyeing in an RTA on the way to fishing .

Really sad that someone doing what he loved should be killed by thugs. Sad that those thugs are in society today, not just those 3 (now 2) but how society is turning them out.

This is close to where I live and I heard at the time the story was
Scott phoned his mate about these guys chucking all the rubbish up the bank and in the river and he was going to have a word with them when they come back
how true that was will never know
I just wish we could hang people again it was stopped because innocent people were wrongly hanged
but now with terrific advancements in proving 100% with DNA and CCTV etc I would vote it in again

Unfortunately gerry, we don't have a police force / legal system that is 100% reliable and unbiased. Look at the recent reports on the met.
And Nick - your comment about what society is creating. ... look at this thread and how quickly it turned into a 'if it was me I'd.. etc' pissing contest. Any kid reading this is going to think he should be carrying anything between a claw hammer and a matching set of pitbulls.
Not the best example to set is it?

Agree - as a 'civilised' society I don't think stringing people up is the answer; may as well bring back stocks for the village idiot / my scolding missus whilst we are at it (actually that's not a bad idea) . . prison should be enough of a wake up call for the remaining two - that's if they survive
I've got teenage lads and its a fine line bringing them up and setting the right example these days with all the desensitising sh*te that's online . . .thats the real problem IMHO. As a parent you want them to be confident and safe, even in the face of occasional adversity without having to wrap them up in cotton wool; as time goes on I'm thinking I wish I'd done the latter . . .

I'm probably not the best example of society myself, one heck of a temper, been 'warned' a few times by the old bill for defending myself, although after being stabbed by a junkie with a needle when I was working as a Loss Prevention officer and seeing him get 18months which after spending that on remand meant he was out almost straight away. Yet I had 2 years of HIV tests, Hep B immunisations and the family stress and breakdown that caused.
Any weapon, baseball bat, hammer even, shows intent to harm, even in defence, whereas a throwing stick or Maglite Torch for example is defensive, and not offensive.
Mind you, I do have a tough looking Husky, who if you approached her at night or with a walking or hiking or any stick would make you think twice with her bark.
(She is a rescue, and hates people with sticks, think I know why).

I've never taken my dog on an overnighter but must admit I'm somewhat the opposite of this thread in that, whilst visually he looks imposing and may be an effective deterrent, if anything kicked off I'd want him to stay out of it. He's like my baby and I wouldn't want him being hurt, if he did step in to protect me I'd be distracted/try to protect him and probably would end up in a worse situation than if I was alone.
Mines more of a trip hazard than a ferocious bivvy defender

It's insured, why bother risking your life over a bunch of possessions, society is broken. I know this my wife is a teacher, year 8 kids punching teachers, calling them a C U next tuesday.

I had 2 guys come past on the canal 2 nights ago they were pissed luckily the older guy said you spoke to my step son and that was it friends for life all because his son was also baiting up but had gone away on holiday,he said if I have any hassle mention his name as he was known in area now I know he was drunk and so was the younger guy but people like that are no issue just taking dog for a walk and stumbled on some one fishing,I'd much rather fish where I am now than my town stretch where kids/adults gangs used it as a short cut the amount of hassle i had even though they are on opposite side was ridiculous but I was still careful, not just me either pleasure anglers fished my side because of the hassle they got especially if they were older.
The stretch I'm on is 30 minute walk with my gear(obviously stop and starting) but i don't see many people maybe dog walkers and joggers oh I did have 3 motorbikes(well scooters)come past with 2 on each bike balaclaved up and in black like the so called road men but had no problem just stay out their way no issues it's because the wether is now picking up a lot more traffic on towpaths nowadays as people want to walk and get fit.

I remember when I lived in Southampton and was fishing a tiny lake not far from home got my dogs with me(2 Staffies) one was very protective other was friendly, anyway couple of the locals(also drunks) who fished the place one of them took exception to me fishing never had issue with him before but he was with his wife he came over and tried to start I kept my cool as I'd got a lot of gear with me didn't want hassle just wanted to fish, anyway my dog came out of bivvy as usual if he didn't like you he'd let you know about it by tail down and a warning growl, the guy started to get lairy as he'd had some Stella's tried to kick my dog or my bivvy not sure which and my dog went for him,he stumbled away as his wife kept calling him and then a guy who I knew and got on really well came round and started on him asking why's he starting trouble when I hadn't done anything to kick it off and he walked off with his tail between his legs as his wife was going mad at him.

Very true, I think the key is to accustom yourself to the surroundings i.e when fishing on a local canal I would have a different people perception than say I would on the syndicate.
It is a scary world when some guys feel the need to be tooled up on the bankside just incase.

The spots I choose are normaly a good walk there tends to be hardly any people about if the weather is poor but more about when the weather takes a turn for the better ie:joggers, dog walkers, cyclists and people using the cut as a short cut to get to and from work also more lads out on motor bikes when weather is better as coppers can't see what they are upto,it's sometimes like a taxi service 2 to a scooter and up land down dressed like ninjas, but never had any problems even the odd couple of school kids taking a shortcut never an issue, but town centre stretch can be bad with gangs of young lads from all ethnic backgrounds taking short cuts from the manor hospital to town centre,I know where I'd feel safer to fish over night.

The theory is brilliant, but sadly not always possible.
On mine and Chanmenie's syndicate, that is in theory safe, no trespassing, a gated entrance, yet while walking Sky round the lake I have had to warn off Eastern European trespassers who climbed through the fence and hedgerow.
It doesn't take much for a safe area to become a dump, Chantry Park in Ipswich, even Alton Water used to be safe, but now it seems the dregs of society rule the roost.
It takes a lot of effort to get things back to decent.
On Alton even walking miles from the car park and hiding away isn't always enough. Drink, drugs and dogging in the car parks meant that they ended up being locked at night.

There is that possibility but as soon as one is twitching on the floor I doubt the others would be hanging around.
I've only tried it with two though of which they soon scarpered after they realised I wasn't messing about doing my Sunday best (was a Sunday night actually, lol) to take off one of their heads with a spade.
The difference is that when you're not afraid of getting a beating then that's when one can get the upper hand.

Just in case you did ever find yourself in a situation where its 1 on 1 and the other person has a knife, when they lunge at you in a straight thrusting motion one way to quickly disarm the attacker is to slap the knife away in a clap like motion.
one hand hits the inside of the wrist where you would take someone's pulse the other hits the outside/back of the hand causing them to fold their hand in towards the chest, reflexes and pressure points make the assailant lose grip of the weapon straight away. This takes some practice and speed is required but with the world the way it is is very useful to have in the bank if you ever need it.

Shame to hear about Alton. Morbius (on here) who we both know has told me about less than desirable people wandering around and fishing in close proximity to him, much to his annoyance!. As for Chantry park that was on the downward spiral from the mid 80's onwards..its only got worse....and worse..... Melton had its issues a few years after I pulled off there, with stories of the baiiffs dealing to all and sundry incidents of assault etc. I think it might have pulled itself out of the mire now ?

The problems on Alton are much of the reason I stopped fishing it except for occasional trips, and no longer carp fishing there.
Chantry Park, a nightmare.
Drink and drugs, poaching and dead bodies...
I haven't fished Melton for ages, it just doesn't appeal except possibly for pike fishing, and I don't know if Sky (dogs) are allowed, and I rarely fish without her.
Morbeus, really nice guy. He's got a lovely lake to fish now, only 1 slightly annoying, mad man on the lake...
