Hi HNY ... i'm thinking of updating my 20 year old Fox X pod and passing it on to the younger generation... can anyone recommend a decent replacement? the RP1 looks flash but silly expensive and seems like the reels sit really close together. I've got Penn Affinity 7000s. also planning to invest in some decent locking backrests of some description (matrix/jag lockdown or locker/nash ones?? - the ND magnet ones are hopeless for fishing tight clutch) suggestions on both welcome ! thanks

If you want to update at sensible money then stick with Fox .... If you want to spend a bit more then the Defiant Trident is the best around and far from the most expensive

Buy the Defiant rod pod that suits your needs and that will be the last rod pod you buy.

I have a 3 rod stainless Trident that's 20 years old. But I fish 2 rods 99% of my time.
In the end I went for the Trident. So glad I did. I could have it specced the width I wanted, as I find 2 rod pods way to narrow. So it's low and stable
Light as a feather and about half the price of the RP1

I agree with some of the previous comments and check in with Keith at MPS Defiant and see which of his pods suits you best. The quality is as good as anything, service is equally as good and the cherry on top is the price, not cheap but far cheaper than the Jag and Solar top end stuff. Back rests, I still use ESP. Cheap but do the job perfectly. You could also look at the Jag lockdowns and the Solar adjustable

I love a pod and had a few over the years starting with the original 1980s Gardner pod and monkey climber set up.
Ive had 4 Tridents from Keith over the years .... Stainless, Carbon (twice ... as regretted selling first one) and Titanium ... I only moved away from Defiant to try the Jag Prolite and then a Dymag Carbon pod but found them very dissapointing so returned to Defiant pretty quickly
The Trident in carbon is the prettiest but the Titanium is bomb proof! .... Lots of manufacturers have copied the design since. Im sure any of Keith's designs will be of similar quality. You rarely see them up for sale second hand.

I've used the JAG super compact rod pod combined with the widest JAG 2+1 snagbars for a number of years and it has been excellent. Easy to put together, never ages - looks like new, wide enough, very stable and packs down into a nice compact bag. It's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for and it is quality gear that will last an eternity. I got fed up of using cheaper rod pods where the paint flakes constantly or where they are so light they are unstable.

the extra width I had put in compared to most two-rod pods. I have a Nash KNX 2 rod
and that's so narrow that even with 9 foot dwarf rods and 4000 shimmys it likes to tip over.

I haven't yet cos I have to wait for my turn but likely the black panther, digging stick, weigh bar, quick change alarm thingys and need to talk to him about the bobbins/indicators

I purchased a solar world wide 20 years ago it was the best then had it stolen 7 years ago so I looked around at all the pods on the market and purchased another WW it's still the best on the market. Solar has recently released the universal although I have no need for it as the WW does all I want.
I wanted a pod that I can sling anywhere not just on a flat bit of ground.

I have the jag compact black mk2 but swapped the buzz bars for the 2+1s it's by far the best pod I've ever owned it does everything I could ever want or need from a pod, I got carried away though and got every extra for it and cost the best price of a decent set of custom rods 🤦♀️
I love my old Obelisk quad pod base.
I can use my normal lightweight bank sticks and buzzer bars when I need to and then stick them on the pod base.
It's a bit heavy to carry around so it sits in the boot unless it's needed, and I will often use stage stands as a first opion.
A lighter pod base would be a good option if I could get one that took my standard sticks.

Die hard ex Fox Quattro user; have had several and still own the first mk1 I ever bought and also a 4rod version (both pending sale) with rare 4rod captive backlead bar!
I've been through a few pods for both short and long session angling over the last few seasons and thought I had found nirvhana with solar (A1 groundhog / A1 GT) however both became annoying for different reasons . . (primarily the bankstick adjustability). Was considering going either full P1 or Defiant (ordered a Carbon Fantail and then wimped out when my name came up) so bit the bullet on Jag and have (currently) never looked back . . .
For larger waters Jag Prolite Super Compact Adjustable with adjustable 3x rod bars (basically a pimped up / slimmer quattro) The splay you can get on this is excellent even with big reels (6000Ts) and the goalpost set up alleviates all twist which can be annoying on other pods.
For smaller waters Jag Prolite Micro with 2+1 adjustable bars - mainly use this as a 2rod for my 10' set up (SS2600s) and the fact that I use it on waters with lots of staging, so set up and security is a doddle and prefer a pod over stage stands - tbf using this pod more often and it may outlive the Super Compact . . .
Both are quality and are built to last - love the lever lock adjustability which makes OCD set up perfection easy to accomplish! I've had a fox quattro since they came out. For 12ft rods it's brilliant. I bought 13ft rods and like the butt ring behind the alarms. I bought the Chris brown 3 rod set up with parallel bars. Suits me fine for now. If I were to splash out on a new system it would be the defiant panther in carbon with custom width and length to suit my needs.
