Pretty much all the same. They like to draw your mind away from the word shelf life hence calling it stabilised

Exactly the same.
The term shelf life in food refers to the length of time something can be stored, where as shelf stable / ambient is the term for its catagory. so stabilised is the exact same as shelf life.
Shelf life baits are stabilised
stabilised baits have a shelf life.
if that makes sense.
The degree of preservation depends on many many factors. not as simple as a pinch of pot sorb anymore for true 12m + shelf bait. you also use things such as MPG, egg powder ( pasteurised ) etc, all to lmit any microbial growth and usually dried for longer.
I remember several people saying their shelf lifes were just dried an extra day, that wasnt true.

Just watched a video and read a bit, all looks like smoke and mirrors. They talk or write about the stabalising process but never say what the process is and no mention of preservatives so I've got a bag of nash scope squid stabalised no use by or best before dates on the bag, does this mean it will contain a high level of preservative?

From memory very similar to the original but in my mind the original had a slightly sweeter background smell. Maybe I should have bought more and tried it but as it believe it is also available in frozen that would be my preferred option.

To be honest I can't fault it , where ever I've used it
A good proportion of my fishing is baiting and I think most good baits applied well would have given me great results but I can't fault it,

Well I've now had a few in the water tank for 24 hours plus and they are still very firm to touch with no sign of breaking down yet. This to me means it is not as soluble as fresh frozen stuff and won't be as attractive initially?

I think in the lake they are more attractive initially than frozen due to the 'stabilisation'. I think many stabilised or shelf lifes are dipped in a glycerine sugar dip. I have a feeling that glycerine is an attractor in its own right

Your probably right, that makes scence,
A firmer bait has its uses, it keeps fishing for you while your not there longer

My shelf life, sorry, 'stabilised' baits break down ok,I've often reeled in a formerly double bait to find only the hooker attached or the other bait whittled down.
The Nash stabilised baits are definitely preserved in a different way from the old shelflifes. If they weren't Gary wouldn't have asked me to have half my bait in shelflife and half stabilised a few years ago (4G Squid). The stabilised baits were actually softer out of the bag than the frozen version.

Mentioned to the shop the bag had no use by date and they said bring it in, my mistake but its very faded and its a best before which was end of July 22 so two weeks past that when I bought it. Got two more bags with best before 11.4.24, opened one and it looks and smell same as the first bag possibly slightly softer but still very firm, not bothered to tank it but will be using it all soon.

The nash shelf ones of old were completely different base mixes. Scopex squid looked like it does now ( freezer form ) but the shelf life looked like nutrabaits techni spice.
Nash were quite late on to change to the modern preservatives but in terms of what is considered shelf life nowadays it's all done in a similar vain.

I use shelf-life baits exclusively these days, they are different to the old preserved baits in texture & taste which is a good thing. The companies it seems have a better understanding on the processes and amounts needed.
I don't use much boilie and vary rarely use them whole so am happy with their use, it's strictly convenience for me, if I was to use loads I would probably go with fresh bait.
Maybe better to get a bottle of lake water to test the baits in as so much more is going.

I've always used freezer bait, prefer the texture and just what I'm confident in, but the last year I've been using sticky krill in shelflife because I can get it really cheap and didn't have much freezer room, after I've used this last lot I won't be buying it again, it's hard and has a biscuity texture to it, plus my results haven't been too great on it either, I may try the freezer version to compare but I think il go back to using my mates bait that I've done really well on over the years.

Just for the record and from someone who actually worked there for a decade, your Nashbait info is not what I'd describe as entirely accurate.

I thought the shelf life baits used to be on the S mix and the freezer the all season S mix?

If you're gonna try and sell it they were the same basemix then you need sectioning lol

Simply add 20ml of glycerin to the eggs prior to processing the paste, and an additional glug of the stuff over the baits after they have finished drying. This will add at least a month or two shelf life to your bait. No need to freeze or air dry; simply add enough glycerin to ensure that each bait receives an even coating. I put the baits in a bowl, add the glycerin and then give the bowl a good toss (imagine you are tossing a salad) to ensure each bait receives a coating of glycerin.
After a few days, the bait will absorb all the glycerin, and they will be dry to the touch. If you want to extend the shelf life even further, simply give the baits another light wash over, allow them to dry once more.
I have actually made boiled baits with a shelf life of a year or more using this method. Whether these would be considered to be stabilized, I have no idea!

Having seen both shelf life and freezer bait back in the day I can confirm that they were definitely a different base mix, nowadays from a visual point of view only they look identical to me, but different from either of the old baits.

Back in the day Nash S Mix Squid Freezer baits were made with the Squid All season base mix and the Shelfies were made with the traditional s mix squid. That's verified by Gary Bayes himself. Incidentally he always recommended using as mixture of both for varied breakdown times.I used the bait for donkeys years and had countless conversations with Gary at shows about this.

BTW i always found the freezer baits far more effective (even though the later plus version with the tiger nut flour never seemed to go off anyway) whether that was down to the fact it was the all season base mix or the fact it was supposed to be a freezer bait who knows.
