been off the fishing scene for while due to the usual commitments ( family / home / work ) but looking into get a bend in the rod in the near future. Just wondering what happened to the high oil hookable pellets that Sonubaits used to produce ? They were spot on and gave a real edge when everyone else was fishing boilies.
They were perfect in summer as they gave off a oil slick when hitting the water, dark in colour and they were perfect on the hair. Looked at Sonubaits website and they seem to have very limited hook bait options.
Any other bait companies produce anything similar ?

Never used them but I once wrote on here about a very hard deep water I was fishing, guy at the side of me rolled up with Berkeley buzz baits, the only way I could describe them was like an oily sponge, WTF
4 hours later he had 3 very good fish out which is a seasons worth of fish for some folks
They worked, especially in the warmer weather and I think this is what pulled them down on that day

True, high oil halibut pettets were massive in the 90's, being cheap people were piling them in until venues started banning them. Same thing happened with tiger nuts but its OK to feed them rubbish long as we can stick a hook in them.

I remember the slicks from pellets and high oil levels at the time, you could walk around lakes and see it washed up on the silt and in the edge on a few waters I used to frequent, not good at all
I also remember conversations and debates as to whether oil slicks were preventing the oxygenation of the water

Don't stick a hook in them if you care about them that much.
You can't say it's fine to put a hook in them and then say don't feed them bait that's bad for them in your opinion 😂😂😂

Remember same, also some lake owners were claiming the fish were loosing weight due to the poor nutritional value of them and people were piling in so much it was all they were eating. I'm sure many said the same about tigers and peanuts before implementing bans.

It's not my opinion it's fact, do your research, all high oil fish pellet are designed carnivorous fish so when fed to omnivores they have a detrimental effect on the health of the fish. Thankfully most carp anglers don't think its OK to feed them rubbish because they are going to stick a hook in them anyway.

High oil not good for carp !
well that's strange as I have recently seen a video of a very well known and respected angler adding various oils to stick mixes, is this a different type of oil they are using ? Surely a single hook bait on the hair can't be that damaging.
At the same time I have found a similar product which I will give a go ..

Single hook baits will be fine, I'm just remembering when the high oil halibut were being used and because they were cheap people were piling them in and the fish became preoccupied with them and they were banned on many waters.
Shaun Harrison has been writing about oil in bait and glugs for years as many fish are over weight or obese which just like humans puts strain on vital organs and shortens life. Nothing will change though as most are obsessed with catching big fish and not bothered if they are over their natural weight with a huge gut.

Whole thread ruined for the OP, poor lad was asking about a product that looks like its discontinued. First post is about them being too oily and harmful to the old carp, thread then spirals into what happened years ago when people piled in cheap oily pellets which has nothing to do with the original post.
Sonubaits S-Pellets were used as a hookbait product and sold as small 2mm 1kg bags so not used to pile it in! So unless anyone knows of a similar product that can help him out maybe start a thread about "Piling in oily pellets into lakes harms the carp" and stay out of this one!

It is ok to discuss things like high oil and fat content in baits such as pellets as some of the younger members of the forum may not remember or even understand why it can be an issue.
Here is my take on it.
I am old enough to remember when salmon and trout pellets were mega! They were very attractive to carp to the point where they were pre occupied on them. The pellets of old were very high in oil, and maybe that is one of the factors that carp liked so much. Todays mainstream pellets are not like that but I'd also say that particles are used far more than pellets at the moment. I have managed to source some very good pellets that are no longer for sale in mainstream angling and trust me they are awesome. But, and it's a big but, how do you put something out there that is brilliant but can have a negative effect if every angler on the lake piled it in?
I'd say particle use is being overdone to death right now but are we seeing any ill effects? The answer is no, not really and that is because on every lake that I personally fish, the carp are getting a varied diet. Some good boilies, some crap ones, some poor particle, some decent ones.
The point I'm getting too is that all of these things are ok to use if the carp are getting them in the right quantities. It's up to us to make sure we don't do things in excess.
An oily hookbait is no problem to a carp at all seeing as he won't actually swallow it, and even if he swallowed 20 of them I'm sure he'd be fine

Interesting Gav, made me wonder as to how selective a carp would be if at all. If I baited a spot with a selection of hemp, maples, maize, maggot, sweetcorn, boilies, tigers and pellet. Assume it would depend on how hungry the fish was as to how much and what items it would eat.

I have performed that test many times and I see the same thing happen many times over.
I threw in maple peas, peanuts, hemp, boilies, tigers and pellets into 4 foot of crystal clear water. The carp circled, and drop down very quickly. The carp took the pellets and boilies first. Within minutes it was too stirred up to actually see what they were eating but one of the syndicate members went out in the boat as he had cast his rig up a nearby tree, and this spooked the feeding carp. What amazed us all was we could clearly see peanuts and tigers on the bottom but the bigger boilies and pellets were gone. Now before you all think I'm completely bonkers and anti particle, what happened next is typical of what carp do. They came back in and cleared off all the particles and the next morning, 6 inches of silt had gone and pure stone was shining through. I'm pretty confident that the hemp kept them digging on that spot!

So looking back on it it was nigels comment to Glenn that sparked a disagreement. All I did was state that with tge attitudes of not being mindful what we feed them we'd end up with none left.
I'm really interested in who's in this little clique of “liners” as six of them seem to disagree with hooking carp for our own gratification? So unless they're no longer anglers and campaigning against catch and release then they're liking posts tokenistically, in which case why bother with it at all lol

The high oil bait 'fads' started off I think with fishmeal boilies being given extremely high levels of oil, mixed in the eggs, and glugged after boiling.
CarpWorld did a series of articles, some head turning covers on fish deaths where the liver was turned to mush as the fish were eating so much oily bait.
Boilie oil levels dropped to a more sensible level, although a fish breeder was still feeding carp trout pellets to improve growth rates, get big fish quickly, and a fair proportion of these fish died at young ages.
A number of match carp waters were forced to ban pellets as the high oil pellets lead to fish dying.
Different fish have different dietary requirements, compared to salmon, halibut or even trout, carp have a low oil or fat requirement in their diet.
Now I'm not going to get into the hookbait only against feeding pellets, but if every angler is fishing with high oil hookbait and feeding normal pellets, at what point does saturation occur?
Does an angler feed with high oil pellets to improve his bite or fish catch rate?
Then every angler starts doing the same...
'Carp don't get the hookbait'. Well sometimes they do. Hookbaits collapse, fall off the hair, or occasionally get eaten as your hookbait is picked up.
I've seen 20mm halibut pellets turn a swim off. A friend of mine tipped a bucket of pellets he couldn't use into the lake. The fish avoided the area for months. A once productive stalking swim became avoided by everything.
2months after the pellets went in, there were still traces of them on the lakebed. The weed had been killed, the lakebed had been impregnated with oil, every fish was avoiding the area, including small perch.

For example I never comment on the foreign. Carping bit and rarely the rig bit, I hardly go abroad and I'm pretty stuck in my way with rigs. Bait is speciality tge and majority of what I post is directly answering OPs questions
But when you see something that is just a stupid statement to make on a forum about high oil feeds / sticking hooks in them then I feel like people should be called out.
You've had two other learned current / previously professional bait makers come on here and speak about oil levels.

FFS nick read the thread. I've not mentioned the oil thing at all. That's not the point being made to you,. Its all written down very clearly by various people. And the same points have been said to you many times before now.

If you could also pop onto the review section and answer my question about your "knowledge" of my apparent involvement with a bait company I'd greatly appreciate it, as I must be getting senile and forgotten all about that

im not going to lock this thread, but i can see a ban coming on very soon if one makes one more stupid comment.
And thats NOT directed at anyone openly. i seem to remember starting a "sick & tired thread" not so long ago, so one best be slightly careful when replying to this post if they wish to continue using this forum, its pathetic, childish and ruins every bait thread on here, especially for the OP

I saw the mention of 'Nick' and thought what have I done this time?
Had to read the rest to work out what was going on.
I think, and while it's a personal view, a lot of angler's forget, or even don't know the long term risks of high oil baits, and it is not helped by bait companies selling pellets as such.
In a bid to 'purify' the problem, trout, salmon or halibut pellets are just being sold as high attract or high oil, not by their name.
I've seen the damage that 20mm halibut pellets can do if left uneaten to the lakebed. Gary Bayes, wrote some articles on the digestion of high oil quantities in baits for carp.
It is possibly why some Nash Baits changed!
The big series of articles in CarpWorld when every man and his dog was soaking their Premier's and Nutrabaits BFM's in Salmon Oil, and how it was affecting fish.
But match carp waters were being affected as well.
Carp, like most fish have an instinct, immediate survival over long term. They will to some extent eat everything we put in front of them, and on poorer quality waters, with low natural food levels, rely on angler's bait.
A fish stocked that has been brought up on pellets might well be more comfortable feeding on pellets than natural food. Some might make the switch, but not every water is rich in naturals.
Surely it is down to us as angler's to provide the healthiest bait we can to give them as healthy a life as possible?

Owner could simply put Rule 1 high quality food bait and no excessive baiting or prebaiting.

Ashmead had a bait amount rule....youve only got to look how wonderful those fish are to know they dont rely on bait

I've found new stockies are especially fond of the pellets they are used to eating I suppose it takes them a while to change their diets. Some change more than others and at different rates.

An industry standard has been mentioned before on here! My own carp have been fished for with mainly boilies and pellets, and they are fed pellets and boilies when nobody is there angling. And they are pristine!

A few posts to answer so please forgive me if I miss anything:
The limit on baiting, how do you do it?
Do you say no more than 1kg of pellets a day?
Or say fish for a week and no more than 10kg of bait to be used.
Some baits, like Vitalin (note I have come away from pellets intentionally), are not going to be as damaging to the environment as pellets may be. So do you limit Vitalin as free bait as well? Or do you simply say 1kg of pellets, but no limit on bread or cereal based groundbait?
Too complicated to police I think, especially when a number of groundbaits may be pellet based.
So the limit simply becomes a certain weight, a ban on pellets, or certain types, or even purchase only from site.
I have seen waters where owners fed their fish with coarse pellets, one swim on one lake was always the best draw...
Mark makes the point about fish being brought up on pellets, and switching to a natural diet; I think Chanmenie on here would back me up, on a rich water where double figure fish were stocked last winter, the carp have already put on in cases over 2lb, previous years doubles are already over 20lb. They have switched off from pellets, straight to natural food and are growing healthily.
This is where we have confusion or differences, the amount of natural food, or anglers bait reliance to survive.
A water poor in natural food, or overstocked and bait reliant fish, the stress that creates with frequent hooking, or a water rich in natural food where pellets or boilies may be a 'treat' rather than an essential.

I agree on fish growth in a rich natural water with plenty of available food. May be different in a pressured water where fish are reliant on anglers feed input. Not my sort of fishing. My club does not even allow pre-baiting. From what I've seen most members don't pile the bait in whilst fishing either. Mixed fishery with plenty of big bream and tench so big beds of bait can be a magnet for the unwanted species.

God this is getting boring.
Mozzie, why can't you let a thread in the bait section run without coming on, telling everyone your mates with the forum owner then totally f**King it up with your b****cks. You don't know everything, although I'm pretty sure you think you do
I agree with what Nigel has said, 100%

He must be mates with somebody as more experienced, knowledgeable, successful and articulate bait makers were banned for a lot less than Mozzi is getting away with. Every thread trashed under the guise of giving advice, advice that is at best arbitrary; use a hydro, use a powder etc etc etc
I've stopped posting on the forum as he just started jumping on every post and picking an argument, waste of time.

Why don't you all pm him and have a conversation,no instead it's the gang bullying mentality and people pressing the little thumbs because it's something to hide behind instead of showing who you are

It's not gang bullying Tony, it's people getting sick and tired of the compulsive lies and nonsense that goes with it. The problem with the pm system on here is that there isn't the option to block people on it, and as he's apparently harrased a few people on here I doubt anyone would really want to engage in that way with him. I know some members have had to block him on other platforms due to this too .
It's a shame because he does actually talk some sense and give some reasonably decent advice sometimes.

Gang bullying? Are you 12? People can collectively disagree with someone without it being bullying.
I had a particularly nasty pm from him last night (seems to be his MO) to which I replied. He's been banned now so it's irrelevant.

And thats the reason I don't post very often, the minute two people who know each other disagree with someone, there's screams of bullying and cliques

Same. He has sent me loads of pms. He's just a pain tbh
Glad he has been banned. Hopefully people might get some actual advice for the various knowledgeable practitioners on here instead of someone who reads lots of books and has a pretend bait company and claims to know everything
