I'm still refusing to buy or eat products from Dairy crest Davidstow, Cornwall..thats all Saputo products..

Today the company appeared in court facing many charges of pollution and negligence..the verdict is on June 23rd

Since last weekend ,that river has been polluted at least twice to my knowledge, I camped by the river on my stretch, only to be woken at 11.45 by a foul smell, and a nasty discharge ,which clouded this once beautiful little trout river..its ruined,no weed no fish now, even the otter has fcud off,no spraints or kill platforms anywhere, dead, dead ,dead...

The toxic discharge is being let out at night,so know one knows,..I know ,and so does my friends at the EA...I hope Saputo ,get heavily fined..

AVOID ALL SAPUTO PRODUCTS....,river and ecosystem murderers..

In the last couple of days The river Ottery has been badly polluted,as well as the Pormorla stream ,all have lost fish..

Cornwall is only a small place,it cannot stand this level of ecosystem abuse ,created by overtourism, greedy selfish farmers, housing developers, cashing in on the second home scandals..

I've said it before.Cornwall is being destroyed in front of our very eyes...money ,and greed

Thing they are not second homes, it's the same in many parts of the UK, they are merely investment properties and cannot be classed as home if the owner isn't in full time residence. To leave a house sitting empty without good reason ie illness, working away etc with so many unable to afford rent never mind buying forcing people onto the streets is morally wrong in my opinion.

Absolute disgrace! They pleaded guilty to all charges therefore knew what they were doing. Someone posted an interesting and scandalous article about the sewage pollution constantly going into UK rivers via water treatment plants on here. It was shocking, but the shareholders got paid out every year from my water bill
Cheers for documenting, acting and posting

I don't get the second home thing, as has been said they aren't homes they're investments. a lot of people buy them and rent them out at extortionate prices.

My generation ( I'm 28 ) was hit HARD by this, I earn above average for my age group, but it is absolutely swallowed up by expenses. average rent around me for a one bed 🛏 ( pushing it to not call it a studio ) is about 1200 prior to utilities.

my own is 1450 a month + utilities, then there is food, toiletries, broad band, phone. car tax and insurance, god forbid I continue my amazon prime account to watch telly, then theres the dreaded unexpecteds, such as car repairs. its well over 2000 a month. the average take home per month for my age group in this country is £1650.

most single children may inherit a house, but for multiply child families that doesn't work.

And quite why this country demands such premiums I don't know, its not a desirable place to live at all anymore, be in horrendous pollution issues like wandle faces, or the massive intravenous drug and homeless problem where I live.

might just buy a campervan and bugger off lol

This country has such high premiums because people have jobs and business can charge it, couple this with the Conservative party selling off all our assets over the years when they have been in power, it's that simple. Foreign business is cashing in on us too.

My apologies though, let's not turn this into a political slagging match. Better in a non carp thread, cost of living

Going back to the release of effluent, it truly is horrendous practice and the sentence does not match the crime for me. Under UK legislation business are facing increased costs for waste disposal and it sounds brash but there will be a trade off and a small fine. In comparison this may be viewed as a viable option. The environment agency have spent millions over the years returning our water courses back to natural habitats following previous years of industrial pollution. The answer is simple for me, high fines and a review on the number of releases. There is always the chance of an accident but there is a difference with intent, which in this case they should have the option to close them down until they upgrade to a recommend treatment system for example.

I'm going to lamp a few stretches later tonight and see if there are many fish left in a couple of places I have permission..

There was beautiful streamer weed, and you'd see the fish drifting in and out, deer would come down early to drink in the mornings, all sorts of wild life, peace and tranquility, like most could only think of .

Now,the river bed ,is dark brown, dead ,I pride myself on my use of words sometimes, on this occasion, I have not the ability to express my total disgust and empty feeling I have..

Thanks all. ..

The problem is that water authorities are never impacted by fines ,even if they are prosecuted.
It is not the CEO or management that suffer a loss, nor the shareholders.
All that happens is that services are reduced and bills increased to pay the fines.

Until individuals are made to suffer personally it will continue unabated.
The problem is further magnified as the consumer is unable to change water supplier to signal their dis satisfaction unless they move out of that area.

Unfortunately Scozza this is purely political. Unregulated industrial and agricultural development and activity in the 18th to early 20th century did devastating damage to our environment. Add to that a tenfold increase in population with little or no utilities infrastructure in booming towns and cities the country was becoming a toxic disaster area.

It wasnt until the middle of the 20th century(I was born in 1955) that serious environmental legislation was passed into law. 1956 seeing the clean air act, forced on the government by massive poisonous smogs killing thousands of people, (it was repealed in 93) particularly in London. There was no comparable legislation for water quality.

Through the 20th century different public authorities were set up to manage national water requirements. The old river authorities, national river authority set up in 89,became part of the Environment Agency in the nineties. By this time slow but steady progress had been made in improving water quality but massive investment was needed

In 1989 the ten public regional water authorities were sold off to private investment entities, eventually overseen by the creation of Ofwat. These of course would be so efficient and profitable that they could make the huge investment needed, make huge profits and reduce the price to the customer while improving services. Anybody smell a rat. This was part of the massive privatisation of publicly owned companies and assets by the conservative
Government begun by Margaret Thatcher in 79 and continued for the next 18 years. Taken up again in 2010 under David Cameron. Its worth rembering in the last 48 years the conservatives have held power for 36 of them. This has been partnered by a drive to deregulate business across the board. Again a Conservative touchstone like reducing taxes and and crippling and privatising public services. Broad and rapid deregulation of standards was kept in check by EU membership requirements. No more, its going to get a lot worse Wandle.
Agricultural chemicals, run off, GM produce, sewage release, extraction, nuclear power, fossil fuels, fracking, reopening coal mines, the list goes on and all increasingly deregulated at the behest of the Conservative paymasters chuckling under their rocks. Nobody can blame any other parties, conservatives have had 12years to show us what they can do. And haven't they just.

Sorry Scozza but it's all politics. Human beings, particularly human greed has to be regulated one way or the other.

Exactly right. In October 2021 they voted against the Environment Bill which would have put tighter restrictions on companies dumping into our waterways, then had the gaul to defend their position by claiming it was a storm in a teacup. That's what all of these scandals are, right? Not important enough to worry about, more important things to do, etc. Except when you look at the absolute state of the country right now, it's not because of one single issue (although Brexit is undoubtably at the centre of most of it), it's loads and loads of so called "storms in teacups" that when combined actually create the perfect storm. It's not going to change with such a disenfranchised population of voters; we need proportional representation before it's too late, and the Tories out. Eventually the results of Tory actions will impact on everyone and we're nearly there with the cost of living crisis.

Bugger all to do with brexit, it started as already pointed out fifty plus years before that. Greed is what it's all about nothing more, greed. Companies making record profits paying record dividends to wealthy share holders and barely investing enough back into the companies.

Unfortunately this thread is essentially about big business polluting and destroying a part of our aquatic environment so it is either arses up and heads in the sand or we have to get involved in the politics of environmental issues to protect our fisheries. This thread on this forum is exactly the place to talk about it.

In one guide or another, all political parties seem to be as bad as each other. A weird mix of capitalists, idealists, pornography addicts and people with a moral compass like Jack sparrows 😂

That doesnt however force people into buying up 25 properties and renting them out at double what they're truly worth

The tories have been in power for 11 years. There's absolutely no way you can know they're ‘all as bad as each other'. It's usually a standard cop out response from a Tory voter who doesn't want to admit they were wrong.

Hardly any problems are to do with Brexit, but quite frequently on big business, companies who pay off politicians to get what they want.

Privatisation from the Thatcher era has allowed the system to fail. Further devolution, sell-offs have brought it to what it is now, water companies, utilities, gas, electricity all owned by private companies who can 'hide' or buy politicians.
Added to that our 'Town centre greenies' as I call them, only see cuddly nature, not the environment as a whole. Most of the UK population live in towns and cities, they don't care about the bits they can't see, the rivers that go through the countryside, the farms, the moors etc.

Utilities need to be nationalised again, and instead of a watchdog bought by the utility company who pay shareholders big bucks, a genuine environmental care.

Proportional representation would work to some extent, but even better would be a non party political system, no political parties at all.

There are many things you can blame on politicians, but does industry get instructed to dispose of toxic substances into the local stream?
Of course not, the loophole is there but the call is made by private business. Unfortunately the most toxic substance is money, it clouds judgement and morality in much the same way as the overspill in question does our waterways.
I'm with Nick and all for a political system that is not party led. Lean where you want politically but we should vote individuals into a smaller number of cabinet positions on merit rather than by association.. though I'm not naïve enough to think that would stop corruption and greed for the reason above, money.
It's like the second home scandal, locals who purchased homes when they were realistically priced are up in arms while local business owners need the trade or they too will be priced out. As flippant as it sounds there are no mines left so you're heavily reliant on tourism and overpriced holiday homes to fund communities; or working in factories who are responsible for the pollution in question, and locals are 100% working there because nobody is doing a 4 hour commute from Lambeth.
Anyone thinking the townie grass is greener and we're all a fiver behind the oligarchs are more than welcome to come and tour my estate

And don't forget it's locals that are selling the houses to grockles. No one put a gun to their head.
The real problem is people moving/retiring down here, selling their house in Croydon for 1mil and buying the same thing for £500k. That drives up the price more than second homes as there's more of that happening, and not just in the “trendy” places.

I lamped the river last night,I saw some small brownies about a mile from the out fall..

It looks like there is some sort of brown, sticky sludge on the stones ,can't see any nice weed now,and there's still waste being let out from the evidence of smelly white toxic foam..

To think I used to drink and swim in this little river,it looks beautiful to the untrained eye, reality is its dead..

June 23 rd,judge Carr,delivers his verdict,Carr,is mooted as a bit of a soft touch down here..we'll see..!

Cathedral City cheese
Frylite ,low fat oil
Lots of whey products
Lurepak..

There are more,...I know a few who work there I shall add a few more over the next day or so..

I smelt the noxious substance recently ,it's a cross tween waste whey and a dead rotting sheep with the wind behind it,..,this smell lasted around 12 hours, felt for the local residents,it's a beautiful rural area,..marred by this great big blob on an airfield..

To use the oft repeated phrase ,it's a ecological man made disaster ,based on greed profits and covert bullying at all levels..

How do I know, well I worked there years ago..in the lab..!

Probably less than a day Joss, Dark Water springs to mind what was it 25 years of pollution fined 671 million dollars which equated to about a weeks profit the joke was the fine was estimated to be under by 300 million so Du-pont's share prices raised by 1% on the back of it and they merged later that year on a 130 billion dollar deal drop in the ocean.

# Adam it's disgusting what big money business get away with as posted before our beautiful river Wye is on its ass few more years and it will be devoid of anything living in its toxic waters, what between Welsh water allowing illegal raw sewage discharge and Avara foods with their intense chicken farm waste the Wye has no hope, Avara are owned By Cargill and Faccenda two massive companies who wouldn't loose any sleep over a massive fine.

Theres been years of talking and no action as money does the talking with the corrupt councils and central government

104'000 recorded sewage spills into Welsh rivers including the Wye in 2020 probably increased somewhere close to 120'000 the following year and only getting worse.

Isn't Vitalite that nasty stuff that vegans/dairy intolerance folk spread on their organic/non gmo/non binary rice crackers?

People make me laugh. They go vegan to save the environment, yet believe a black country pig farm is more damaging to the environment than the many many products required to make a Paul McCartney chipolata.

Yep,that it mate...

They sell the dream of community, community farms, sustainability, empathy and consideration towards the environment..

It's got a terrible reputation locally, for bullying, intimidation and poor employee care..

I see that little river ,daily...a shadow of its self ..ruined by greed and fear of corporate power and monetary gain..

Looks like a prison with massive silos..!
