Ffs. It's pretty much at the point custom rods are pricing themselves out of existence.
What with 1k+ bivvies, £750 on alarms and £400+ pods etc. it really is beyond a joke

Everything will continue to go up in price until someone gets a grip on fuel prices.

Since the advent of the manufactured fuel crisis my diesel costs have gone up from £30 a day to just about squeezing home on £40 a day....I work 7 days a week so it's costing me £70 a week more to do the same job.

This applies across the board...Shell profits for the last quarter have gone from JUST £900 million to £12 billion.

It's an absolute piss take

A factory built 12ft 2.25 multi carp is now £276 !!!! And some of the aviator range (13ft 4.5) are a few quid under £490 . Crazy prices but as said all companies will be sticking up prices.

I travelled down to liverpool for the football yesterday and then to manchester for the boxing and noticed a significant hike in fuel cost !!!! Diesel was £1.75 on mway !!!!!!!

Fuel poverty is practically here. Just wait until Putin invades the Ukraine, they'll add another another quid to the cost of a litre. Thank god I work from home mostly.

I can't see that happening anytime soon unfortunately.

This isn't some political rant:

The nonsense kabuki theater that's going on over in Ukraine - Johnson puffing himself up like some self styled Winston Churchill type character because he wants to cut an economic trading deal with the Biden admin, with the Biden admin hating on the Germans because they absolutely need the Nordstreem 2 pipeline to go ahead because the Germans have nigh on ended nuclear power production and the Biden admin want to crush (and i'd posit Johnson wants some sweet revenge over the Germans) the powerhouse of Europe...and using the total cobblers that they've crafted of the imminent invasion of Ukraine as a smokescreen for their silly drama. Because of all of this silliness, the speculators have ramped up the prices, Johnson and Co aren't doing anything to lessen the speculation only exacerbating the situation; 4 minute warning when? We'll be all be paying sky high prices until god knows when.

It really wouldn't be a surprise to me at all if the price rises will become the "new normal", I mean, how hard would it be for them to conjure up some flannel about 'muh climate change' and "we have to accept these new prices rises to offset imminent climate catastrophe" and have the tax pounderino's come 'a' rollin in; they're just so predictable.

If you can, best get what you mostly need now before the prices go stratospheric.

And yet you can buy a comparable (totally capable) imported fully built rod to each of those for less than half of that. There's no need for £500 rods, none at all
I've cleared right out and will be going to a pair of drennan super specialists, 4 esp or Nash retractables and pennies on the spool

A lot of stuff has done it recently all free spirit rods went up in the new year, I've been looking at getting some 12ft 3.5 hi-s all black edition they are around £528 each now but was around the £475 before hand so that's an extra £150 extra now for nothing

I'll be honest I don't normally change my mind on stuff I want but I'm having second thoughts on them, I can get a decent set of custom rods made for that. Like others have already said nothing has changed at all apart from the price

Haha wouldn't feel bad paying that for a rod 😂

Your right though ,2nd hand prices have gone bonkers,I was looking at a old skool reel ,must be around 40 yrs old ,in a box and alleged to be unused, seller wanted £250 for it..

I don't mind paying a fair price for ,gear that's not made anymore or retro ,but it's got silly ,the prices now,eg I had a want for an ABU 506 ,506m or 501...not long ago they were realistically priced, not so much now..

Other than aesthetics are they so much better than other rods that are readily available?

I too own a few sage fly rods. I feel with a top end fly fishing rod you can really feel the benefit of spending the extra money and buying the best a lot more than you can with a carp rod. When fly fishing you're holding and casting the rod all day and you really feel it working. I'm not a big caster when carp fishing though so I may well be wrong. But I think the difference between the mid-high priced carp rods is negligible.

I think what bothers most people (me included) is the fact that you pay more and more now for stuff that mostly has come down in quality (bivvies, reels etc). You now have to pay aqua money for a JRC. Look at those new (dpm) Tempest. That costs more than my first car!

I think what bothers a lot of people ,is gradually carping is turning into a very expensive pursuit, quite possibly elitist ,in monetary terms..

It used to be quite cheap to actually fish ,and if I remember the gear was also ,especially if new tech ,very dear ,but now its both ,expensive to fish and expensive to buy mid range gear..

Obviously there are NGT ,which I have some of their products, and no issues with the kit..

What I'm trying to say ,most likely inadequately speaking, angling could end up like football, very very overpriced..

I don't know,what do others think?

It's hard to believe ,but even in Bushcraft, the whole idea of which is self sufficient living or survival, even this has gone 'money'...I mean the full tang knives, clothing, shelters even has got really expensive, it's not the ethos of bushcraft, but it's gone money ,money..!

I'm really trying to live my life simple,it's getting harder to do that ,still I'm giving it my best..

Everything is expensive now, two years ago when the world stopped and started and stopped in the industry I work in the semiconductor one we saw price increases after price increases / material shortages / packaging / testing manufacturing leadtimes went out and they still have not recovered. A years leadtime is still the normal for chips hence the new car market is screwed (as they can't get the ones they need for the cars) the price of second hand cars through the roof.

I would hope by summer 2023 the worst if behind us...

The only saving grace for many of us is that we more than likely already have most if not all of our kit. I appreciate that people want to upgrade but that might have to wait if other things like gas and electric bills are trebling.

The concern I have is prices are fast to go up and very slow to come down - if at all and what we are seeing now may get worse not better.

A fairly decent wage five years ago isn't enough to live on these days, especially in the south east.

I pay £1450 in rent before utilities and thats a tiny one bed flat in brighton, moving to a two bed house 8 miles away for 200 less but that'll probably be eaten up by utilities.
All the flats and small houses are bought up by land lords or used for council so getting a mortgage is a pipe dream at the moment, even though I feel lucky earning what I do.

I have no idea how youngsters are going to be able to afford to get into fishing especially carp fishing. I recently bought a whip, some pole rigs and bits and pieces to take my nephew with me on day sessions, 100quid!

With everything going up a lot of people wont be able to afford to set there kids up to fish.

When I grew up the head bailiff down my local pond used to lend kids gear, there was always some method feeders and wagglers set up on rods, he'd take two tins of meat out his wage packet and use a mm cutter and divide it among about ten little drinks pots with cling film over them.

I think he'd be rolling in his grave looking at the state of thing now bless his kind heart.

I'm going to speak to a friend at the angling trust, see if theres any sort of initiative that could be done to lend gear to fisheries

I agree what you say it's a bit like the 70s wake up to find your petrol cap on the floor someone's taken your petrol or your car up on bricks wheels gone best to buy second hand tackle if you can
and if these people who think it's great to pay these ridiculous prices stop buying the price will be driven down then it would be a case of drop the price or have a warehouse full this £1000.00 for a bivvy it's absolutely ridiculous there laughing all the way to the bank

I agree with all the price increases, but I don't think we have ever had cheaper decent budget tackle available...you don't have to spend a fortune to go and catch carp, carp anglers problems is we all like things in either double or triple quantity..I.e a 2 or 3 rod set up.
you can go and catch carp with 1 rod,a net, unhooking mat, carp care kit and minimum terminal gear, add a can of corn and your away.
it gets expensive when you replicate 3 rods, reels, matching net, then you've got 3 x the amount of everything...we can be our own worse enemy's at times.

One rod, proper carp fishimg and my favourite way to catch them, nice and light with hardly any gear. That was the reason i stopped carp fishing in the first place as found it a total pain in the ass the amount of gear i used to take. I barbel fish now and that is going the same way with the amount of gear and i can see me getting bored with that as well as hate all the prep and gear i need now.

That approach is good for very well stocked waters and for sh that are catchable within casting range, it all changes once you want to get away from the madness that comes with fishing well stocked waters, then you need more rods to increase your chancy with less fish about; all depends of size of water mind.

If you're e only a handful it f fish to go for on some of these it waters - whatever big means to you - you could sell be pissing in the wind with your one rod approach..

👍🏻 Give me a river any day over a carp lake. There are some huge carp and cat fish in the trent at a1 pits probably washed in from the carp lakes in the floods. Still yet to catch one mind. There supposedly big sturgeon in there as well so you never know what you might catch which really adds to the excitement.

Noticed a few price hikes recently on gear that's been out a while...no doubt some are going up because of the shipping increases from China but you can't help thinking that some prices are being hiked to take advantage of the situation...

Agree it's about time they joined with the lakes and got rid of this close season considering they have kayaks swimmers dogs boats etc using the river I was told it was an old law brought in 1850 to protect salmon stocks don't know if true another one is that the lords wanted to fish for salmon privately my argument is there's nowhere near as many people fishing the river you can walk for miles not see an angler
And where I fish it's rock hard be lucky to catch so can't see how we disturb breeding I would support it if everyone was not allowed to use it

Mozzi ,I find what you're saying ,is similar to my area ..

There are lots and lots of empty properties around here all second homes, some literally used for a couple of weeks a year.

I won't detail what I think about the situation or those out of area people who bought them up..its immoral..,totally wrong..

Over the years I have literally given away my kit to kids around here,it's heartening to say some still go fishing,so it pays to help youngsters out..

Disagree, see plenty of carpers on big low stock waters rock up and set up anywhere that's convenient, cast out and bait up hoping the fish will find them while they relax with a beer. The mobile angler on same venue that puts the work in to find the fish and whare they are feeding that baits a few of these spots and moves with the fish will out fish the three rod stationary carper over the course of time. Many three rod carpers are like trappers but few bother to put the traps in the right place at the right time and catch more by luck. The single rod mobile angler is more like a hunter seaking out his prey and optimising his chances for the time spent actually fishing. Different scenario on the bit commercial waters that draw lots for a swim and your stuck there for the duration which would drive me nuts and why I won't fish these places.

All depends really on many different factors. A place I was last fishing, the most successful angler on the place fished 2 nights a week against a horde of others that were on furlough - not me in both cases. He fished one spot all season. There were a lot of blokes mega active, plotting up for an hour in one swim, only to move to 6 other swims throughout the day. Those later blokes, the most successful of the bunch had three vs most successful blokes 15 of a place that was 100 acres with 100 fish tops.

Seen the same at the place I'm on now. And as an example of a counter narrative to what you're saying, look at that Oz bloke who fished Ferry Lagoon who was mega active and caught the sum total of zero, other blokes fishing caught from what I gather which he wasn't privy to that info at the time.

What I'm saying is in all cases, it's not a one size fits all.

And just to add: I wouldn't dare say you can't catch a bunch of fish from a low stocked water, or any water come to that, sometimes more rods increases your chances, sometimes not so much.

It all depends on what you want and enjoy and how you judge success. There is still plenty of good quality coarse fishing all over the country controlled by local or bigger regional clubs and associations. They all have waters that contain carp. Many allow night and session fishing on selected venues though toilets, freshwater and other facilties may not be provided. You can certainly fish dawn to dusk as many days as you like.
Some of the big clubs may be £200 ish down to £30ish and this will be for access to multiple waters, lakes, ponds, canals, rivers and streams. Many of which contain carp to over 20 pounds. In other words, coarse fishing the way it has always been. This provided me with all my angling needs and many big Specimen fish for over 50 years and still does. One rod, one reel, minimum gear and cheap baits. Really enjoyable low cost angling.
It is only in the last 5 or 6 years since retirement I have been regularly session fishing carp waters. Oh boy! 5 grands worth of rods and reels on 500 quids worth of pods/sticks carrying 500 quids worth of alarms with permission to fish a single lake for 2 grand and 200 quid or more on bait. Not me I hasten to add though it is costing me money.
If you need lots of big fish called daft names in easy to fish waters with all mod cons and need your gear fix it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to fish your tennis court sized share of the lake. Your choice, don't moan.

I completely agree. If you decide to angle purely on your own terms for fish that may not be considered big enough to others there is some amazing fishing for not a lot of money at all out there.

I picked up some Free Spirit rods last month, just checked the shop and they're now £40 more expensive - each.

Who actually needs the latest expensive tackle ?

answer; almost nobody, but it looks nice and might impress some of your mates or other anglers....

There is a ridiculous turnover of tackle driven by fashion - so make the most of it and buy last years top of the range rod/reel for half price.

Better still we caught fish 10 and even 20 years ago with the tackle available then -which you can now buy for a pittance.....it works just fine apart from maybe 5% of extreme range fishing.

You don't need a £500 bivvy - an old oval etc etc will work....and so on.

You don't need a net that matches your rods, god forbid.

Buy a bit of half decent bait and learn to put it in the right place. Fish a sensibly priced club water and you can catch decent fish on a very low budget.

BUT; here's the snag. Fishing overall is still much too cheap. We've had it too good for too long and that pattern is changing. And fast. Where I live (Cotswold water park) other people now want the lakes we have traditionally fished - so anglers are going to have to start paying market rates rather than peppercorn rents for their fishing.

Add in the water owners who have realised that lakeside accommodation is a money spinner and the world is changing.

The days of cheap day tickets/club tickets are numbered.....

Your dead right it's all about fashion to show that you have the latest gear the tackle companies will keep putting the price up as they know it will sell concentrate on what's in the water not on the bank

You also dont need a top of the range car but i dont want to drive around in a lada ! Or walk around in clothes from sue ryder or eat ***** from fast food joints (i wont call them restaurants cause they are not) . We are all individuals buy what you want. All i said is harrisons are putting up the price of blanks something i have a vested interest in.

Never understood how landing nets can be so expensive - it's not like they need to be high performance or anything. Or why people will pay £150+ for a net, and then moan about the cost of bait/whatever. What does an expensive net do that a £30 one doesn't? Especially once they are in the water if you use a net float?

(Saying all that, mines a Harrison one that matches my Torrix's )

Its nice to have though. Ive just bought the new jag rp1 316 pod. I dont buy it to look good as i dont even go carp anymore so no one sees it other than me as it just sits in the garage. I like nice new shiny fishing tackle. As for spend it on bait ive never scrimped on bait either, ive always bought quality bait. Ive always had nice gear because thats what i like to spend my money on and thats what makes me happy and thats what life is all about.

You can be smart about it all too. I've got a mixture of new a second hand tackle but it's all carefully researched and exactly the stuff I want. This means there's less reason to feel the need to “upgrade”. People change gear all the time so many bargains to be had for those willing to wait.

Exactly right.

If you can afford fancy new gear and it makes you happy - then fine.

But if you have a limited budget the point I'm making is that the cost of decent fishing is going to go through the roof - and that is out of your control. So it makes sense to spend less on ‘nice to have' gear and invest a bigger proportion of you budget on tickets.

Apologies to the rod builders amongst us !

I still buy second hand gear from ebay but it still has to be new and unused. I only paid £500 for two brand new century graphene carp rods and they are usually £550 each. They still had there tags on the rings. I also got a brand century spod rod with titanium rings for £120, the rings alone would of cost more than that so there are bargains to be had if you look.
