From Korda?

My miss spent youth, is there more to the content of the book than literally a youth spent carp angling if no then Darrell should have got out more or as title suggests is there accounts of sex, drugs, gang membership maybe prison time it's just I can't get past the title and find it uninviting. Yes he can catch carp but I feel I could be in for a bore fest without a decent review on it.

Always makes me chuckle the word "sacrifices" with these full time anglers. Yeah, must have been a right sacrifice creaming the system and smoking weed all week under a piece of nylon sat next to a pond.

Only people that make sacrifices in carp fishing are those blokes holding down a full time job, family and bills to pay.

Got mine ordered was the first carping book I read when it first came out I foolishly sold my 1st edition copy but its what got me start on collecting book, definitely one of the best

I'm really looking forward to adding this one to my collection and reading it....I missed out on the first edition and wasn't prepared to pay over £100 for a copy on eBay...

From what I have read about Darrell and also from his comments on various podcasts it is quite clear that for all of his life, Carp fishing came first and everything else a distant second......even now with his young family it doesn't appear to stop him spending endless hours on the bank. OK, he will argue now that it is his job but by his own admission there have been times, (and recent ones at that) he barely had 2 coins to rub together because he would even turn down work for Korda to go fishing.....he openly said he only ever appeared at the shows because of the money, nothing else!

Some will see it as complete dedication to his sport, others will see it as being completely and utterly selfish..

Super Stars dont make me laugh, there isn't a single superstar in the whole game.
Even the Korda Klones who've done a bit of TV would only get recognized by fellow carpers. Terry H and Dave L have a bit of gravitas but that's about it. The rest are here today gone tomorrow.

There are better and more anglers out there that no one ever hears about than the ones you do.

Ain't that the truth.

One thing this lockdown has done was even the playing field for the working man to have time on the bank and realise that time is/was the biggest asset....people can bang on about watercraft, sharp hooks...blah blah...it aint rocket science for a competent angler. At the end of the day it boils down to time sat next to the pond......i know guys will disagree but even when you speak to the real top end anglers that are out of limelight, they will say the same.

How many of the names have been splashing big fish captures across the tabloids over the past 18 months.....the answer is barely none...and why...it's because unlike the past, they don't have the lake to themselves 3/4 days a week and are now in the same mix as the rest of us.

I've fished on the same pit as Darrell (he is a good bloke), seeing is believing the amount of time these full timers put in each week - sat under a brolly (all up your talking average 9 months of the year). One thing they aint is superstars.

Emergency services, hospital workers, HM Forces e.t.c. and blokes that contribute to the fabric of our country,.....they come under the superstar banner.

Later....off for a hard days graft on site.

P.S - i will be buying the book

To be fair, Daryl has always said that time is the biggest edge.

I've followed the carp catcher blogs from the start and respect the guys simple realistic honest approach to blogging which over the years have still remained untainted by the media bull crap is a feat in its self, I wonder though why he wasn't swept up with the success of carpings popularity or did he stay well clear?

I remember in one of his blogs him being over the moon as Delkim had sent him a mug and hat as he kept instilling the virtues of the bite alarms. They got him on the cheap if you ask me. Not watched one of his vlogs in ages. Will have to have a catch up. He was definately one of the first on this carp fishing vlogging. Hope he gets better soon.

I understand what your saying..

A long time ago I and another chap did a carp evening,which was pretty unheard of in my area,the only thing similar,was when Ken was RO,for the carp society..

Anyway...

We had some well known and very dedicated anglers come and do a talk,sideshow,show the latest gear etc..thing was,I was the only one who was married,as carping had cost them dearly..!!

It's funny, I can't help thinking that my love of Carp fishing has saved me from being married!

Girlfriends have never hung around for long, as I've preferred to spend time at the lake.


The thought of having to tell anyone where I'm going, when I will be back, etc, fills me with dread.


However, I could never fish full time, I'd be bored after a week. No way would I want to be skint as well.

I think I'm a lucky chap,my lady doesn't mind me going fishing or how long for,I've been married for 33 yrs today..

There was a time when I did weddings on a Saturday, leaving me a whole five days free,as the money was good back then,this was why I fished so many different places,and made lots of friends on the way..

I like to have something to look forward to now,so I don't 'overfish' any longer..

I don't think I'd like to be one of the full timers,or anything like that now,I could have been though..quite easily..

I'm no full timer but I do a 52hrs session every other weekend and my mrs doesn't mind me doing it, I don't drink so never go out with the lads, she says she would rather me on the bank than a nightclub everytime 🤣

Without the love and support of my fantastic missus I would never have been able to have such a long and rewarding working (fishing!!!) life. She has been by my side (often ahead of me!) for 58 years! How she ever put up with me for all those years is a constant source of wonder to me. Nothing beats the love of a good woman. We met at a college dance at Bromley Tech on 2nd November 1963. To paraphrase Franki Valli and the Four seasons...

I get out when I can for mainly overnighters. Can't think when I did 24hrs or more. Having a mrs and 4 kids, it just isn't fair on them. Would rather see the kids grow up. Oh how lucky I was in my 20s going when ever the hell I liked and for however long I wanted. Things change but wouldn't have it any other way

always enjoyed the carp catcher, love the honest no bull approach to his videos, I've always said full time fishing is something id never want. the fishing has always been an escape from my job. i wouldn't feel the same about it if it was my full time occupation.

I know what you mean about money being good back then.

I earnt more for 3 days running venues and functions in the early 00's than I do now. Come back from 4 days work with £750-1000, now in the same trade that is 3 weeks to a months work.

I have been down the full time fishing route, running lakes, then on 'days off', fishing myself; it does get hard, your days off are not always days off if people recognise you from your fishery, answering questions, giving tips and advice.

I don't really think that fishing full time, unless extremely lucky, gives you more than the minimum wage, unless you get a full sponsorship. If you live with anyone they must be earning decent money as well.

Who cares? His life, his time, his choice, his family, his consequence; same as for anyone...

The thing about time on the bank is extremely true... When it's game on and you have time, it is far more likely that you'll be there during the window, and (able to be) in the right place... Being consistent on limited time is far, far harder... And arguably makes one a better angler... Balance is key, but by the same token who is to say what is right for each individual's life at that time..? Being jealous or envious of another's results is a pointless exercise... Self-improvement, making your time work for you, being happy, enjoying it... Or write on a forum how much it dogs you off that matey slays the lake on four nights a week (midweek) compared to your one night on a Friday... If it bothers anyone THAT much, ditch the missus, drop the kids, get divorced, search out a job that suits and go fishing four nights a week then... Trust me, it's bloody hard work to sustain the mental side of things, time and again, year after year, venue after venue... No thanks, as obsessive as it is, it's a hobby.

Every single person on here has the thought “...if I had more time, then....” And that proves the point... Time... If it truly matters to you THAT much, then go and do it... Only here once...

Mine came today

I read Keven Maddocks Carp Fever and a couple of Rob Marlyn books years ago and enjoyed them. The Syndicate series was totally superb other than that I have absolutely no interest although I'd would maybe one day read Rod Hutchinson and Jim Gibson's.

I purchased carp world or the similar equivalent mag a few months ago and managed to read a few pages, really does not interest me.

Watching Terry Hearn on the teams was the last thing I found to be enjoyable.

For me it's like East Enders watch someone else's life or live yours.

Nothing wrong with picking ideas up from people though is there. Always interesting to see how others have tackled challenges etc.

In relation to this book though, didnt realise that a signed copy of a book meant literally writing your name in it. Not massively fussed as it didnt cost extra and im not a collector, just wanted to read it, but i expected at least best wishes
