Forgot my kettle yesterday but was travelling light. Thought to just put my metal mug directly on the stove and it worked well. So much so that I don't want to go back to the kettle when fishing without the barrow. Tea stayed hot longer in the heated mug and made a nice hand warmer.
Occurred to me there might be a camping mug for this specific purpose given the convenience. Only things I'm missing is a lid to reduce heat loss and an insulated handle.

Make sure it's a single layer mug and not a double layer insulated mug. It will explode if it's a double layer.. Also you can get silicon lips to go on the titanium mugs to protect your lips from burning.

Done it for years backpacking, titanium single wall the best, think mines Lixada, Alpkit in the uk do a similar one 650ml from memory, fits a 100g gas canister, tiny £10 titanium stove, foldding titanium spoon and lighters all you need, get one of this charity silicone bracelets to put around the rim to protect your lips. Bladder and water filter and you've a proper lightweight piece of kit.

I like messing about with stoves, going light etc..
This is what I've done,when barrowless or there are styles,or I'm not meant to be there in the first place...!!
I use the mini trangia 28,the bowl is my cup,the frypan is the lid which speeds the boil,I sometimes heat the can of food straight on the trivet,obviously I pierce the can beforehand..or I take a swedish foldable cup,its plastic,but folds..I make a windshield out of foil,this wraps around the base of the mini trangia,burner base...I've tried,all manner of woodgasifiers,stickstoves with the MSR,775 seagull pots,and so on...this 28 mini is the best around I have found,I have used Whitebox alcohol stove plus a titanium Snowpeak cup,but still go back to the Trangia mini...things get even more,uber lightweight if you make yr own stirred en route and use a water filter,which decreases weight,as water is very heavy..
My Tenkara came today,so i could get my whole overnight ,tarp,sleeping bag down in a NI,day pack...,but that's for small valley streams,or pools ,getting my kit minimal became a sub fascination..lol

I have been using an old US army cup dated 1949 since the early '80's to boil water in as well as cook my food in. Last year I purchased a French army one for our lass when she comes with me as I do not let anyone touch my mug, its been all round the World with me when I was in the army for 23 years and I regard it as lucky and I don't want it jinxing

The one you want is the US army canteen cup as you can use anything from a bayonet to a knife to lift it from a stove or fire without burning your hand. And if you look amongst the stoves, there is a few cookers for cooking with the mugs.

The type of tape is the camo tape that people had a craze for to put round white bait buckets and water canisters a good few years ago.

The optimus terra solo set plus the crux light stove is worth a look, its very light and compact, i keep a 300ml titanium cup, crux lite stove and titanium spork and lighter in mine and its no size at all

Check out Alpkit, their titanium items are great. I've hammered their pot and pan set over the years and it's still going strong.

I said he could have some of my tea but he came up with the genius idea of putting his cheap metal mug on his stove. He lit the stove and I was sat there laughing while his cheap monkey metal cup turned blue, pink and all colours, your not going to drink out of that are you I asked, why not he said, I was just psml
The piece de resistance was when the water had boiled, he made his brew and then contemplated how to pick the mug up to drink it, being inventive he put his hand inside his brand new ESP fleece, picked it up, went for a drink, burnt his hand and then dropped it
Brand new ESP fleece with a nice hole around the cuff
