Used to buy the mail religiously as a kid - I remember looking at pictures of HUGE (20lb lol) carp and dreaming about catching fish like that. Was always Optonics, Gardner rod Pods and Richworth Boilies.

With the growth of the interne their days were numbered sadly. You cant stop progress.....

gutting..... I remember getting my first method feeder included with the mail.

remember drawing circles around all the bits of tackle I wanted and giving it to my dad for Christmas.

Massive shame,

but you have to wonder why the largest participant sport in the country cannot maintain print media, yet there are several different magazines on crochet, cross stitch, model trains etc etc.

I believe that the Mail tried to turn abit "red top" with it's bizarre stories, and it's constant focus on match fishing and backlash from publicising massive 1000lb+ keepnets.

If it wasn't for the Martin Bowler features, and articles on Steve Ringer catching pasties with expander pellets, it would a gone sooner.

Anyone who won a prize from them as a kid could tell you exactly what you got. (Middy cap and a pack of Kamasan Maggot hooks)

I used to cut out the pictures of the fish from the "species" heading under the venues and stick them onto school books etc, or i'd chuck them onto the dining table, nick a load of trees from my Tracey Island and make it into a lake, with the Playmobil figures fishing for them (yes, this was last week. I've grown up now.)

Like most not bought for years. Used to buy it for the match results to cut out my results and stick in a scrap book. Sad I know 🙈

I won a really nice keep net for letter of the week about 10 years back. Still use it now.

I used to get 3 bob a Week pocket money back in I would say 1971-2, I'd buy the angling times, some sweets and as many boxes of matches as I had change for.
Go up the railway embankment at the back of our house Catch the grass alight sit back and eat the sweets whilst reading the paper.

Used to love it as kid, always preferred the Mail to the Times as it was a magazine and the Times was a paper. I would tear out the pages with features on rigs and the way to catch fish and keep them in a plastic wallet. I remember Andy Little being the main man 🙂 and if my memory serves me right didn't Dave Harell get turned into a Cartoon feature?

A shame but a sign of the times I guess, Back when we were kids (early 80's) we devoured anything carp related, Times, Mail, Coarse fisher/man, Carp Fisher, the Carp Catcher etc. But once Carpworld/Big Carp appeared these were a godsend in relation to the sparse content in the earlier weeklies. Carp Talk usurped them even further. You would have thought with the recent resurgence in angling and supermarkets carrying a lot of news print nowadays there would have been a market for it to survive but social media kills all in front of it.. unfortunately

Hands up if you've been on the front page over the years

Really sad.

I've had a number of pics in there over the years, 5lb chub, 7lb and 9lb tench in a session back in the 1980's, a 12lb tench, 20lb carp, two 2lb roach in 2 weeks a few years ago.

I can remember winning 2 Daiwa reels, AG1350's Rear drag reels perfect for ledgering with my twin tip ledger rods and the screw in tip section, and a large box of Korum luggage and bits, some of which I donated to an angling charity.

I used to love the Andy Little piece, Frank Barlow match report, and the Anglian reports gave me a fair few places to fish.

Think it is the same as most other withdrawals, keeping up with the internet. Must admit I do prefer the paper version over anything on 'net though.

Gutted . 30 years of fishing and I still get it when I can . Stuck at the moment with the online version as I live abroad . Spending my pocket money on getting the times and mail. Hopping to get some free floats or a disgorger. Think I have got one of the free little green boxes somewhere

The adverts that appeared around November time for the wooden box of floats and other tackle bits. 50 odd assorted floats, wagglers and stick floats, shot, bread punch, some hooks and decent ledger weights.

I bought one when I was 14, the box stayed with me until I was on my 20's. Most of the floats were really decent sets, from smallest to largest, insert wagglers, canal wagglers, Avon and stick floats.

Tis a shame, must have bought hundreds when I was younger. At that time there wasn't any other way of getting the info/your fix other than mags/papers, nowadays the info is so freely available it's beyond belief, in fact I'd go so far as to say nowadays the problem has become finding the right info by having to wade through all the crap that's out there.

In the same boat as most, hadn't bought since i was on my paper round (remember the art of angling? monthly subscription that went in a folder as well?). The issues approaching the traditional start always had a spool of line, plastic disgorger or a clam shell bits box. I still have the bright green one they first did containing all my bits and pieces today.

The one thing it did do, was make the visit to the supermarket more bearable when the missus got side tracked by the clothing aisle!!
