yes I did but it wasnt my first 50 ...................... it was my first ENGLISH 50 and one of my favourite pictures I asked my mate to stand still with the camera while I moved around trying different poses and angles and I think this shot captures the incredible width of her and I have big hands size10.5 ! sadly Tolpits Plodder is now no longer with us a TRUE English fish over 45 years old legendary fish that I had the privilege of being the 1st person to catch when she went 50 plus

Mid 20s and for the 70s yes they were good fish
I actually caught 5 but my pal had to go to work after taking that picture and I caught 3 more all about the same size it was a manic 4 and a half hour spell and a double hook up landing 2 in the same net ! and no pictures
but it didnt matter they are memories still stored in my bonce lol

Edit apparently fish started getting names and the top one has been positively ID as a fish that later got the name Lucky

few years earlier being a bit of a knob me and mate George

then after a few years we lost contact with each other and met up a few weeks ago for the first time in 35 years now both now in our 70s both happy to still be above ground and still fishing

I worked out a way of fishing a surface bait with hoards of ducks and seagulls on the lake 5 casts five fish

we used all the film up on those I went on to catch more that day
the lake was Cut mill Pond Farnham NOT to be confused with cuttle mill
the big problem was if you tried a bit of bread crust the ducks or gulls would be on it before the carp had any chance !

so I sat thinking about a solution then I thought if I was underwater looking up to a sunny sky anything on the surface would surely look black ?
so spoke to my fishing partner and said Brian can you source some edible black food colouring ? after we got some I made up a couple of red devil floater cakes with the black colouring they came out jet black so I sawed them up into 1 inch cubes
when the fish came up on the surface later that day I pulted half a dozen largish cubes the ducks and gulls did not recognise the black floating cubes as a food source but the carp DID ! my god they went mad for them so I tied a arlesey bomb weight to a 10" bit of line onto a swivel a ledger stop 6 inches from the hook wacked it into the centre of the lake fed out the line till the black cube popped up seconds later fish on landed it put it into the GPO hessian sack you see under the fish in the picture chucked out instant fish on the second it popped up and so it went went 5 fish were in the sack in no time took the pics using all the film up in the camera and did the same again magical times
