Just read a story on the Carpfeed website about a chap who ended up hand lining in a 45lb+ common after it got tangled in one of his other lines. The thing is, the hook pulled close to the bank. As the fish lay confused in shallow water, he then scooped it up and claimed the capture. Whats everyone's views on this? To me, he lost the fish as he didnt net it whilst still attached to it......however Im pretty sure many others would also claim the capture...??

No doubt I'm in the minority as I don't post my captures or even take photos so mine will probably will be an unusual opinion and no doubt won't be the answer you were expecting
It sounds like it's annoyed you a bit but really it's between the guy and his conscience. If he wants to claim it then so be it. I certainly wouldn't let it bother you.
Personally I catch fish for the challenge not the publicity, no picture, no holding the fish, just return it as quickly as possible.

He hooked it and landed it, therefore he caught the fish IMHO.
What if the hook had pinged at the net and he scooped it up quick, would that not count as well?

I think it counts. It's not like he saw a fish laying up and threw his net at it. It picked up his bait, he played it and landed it. Anyway it's up to him, I think it's a bit too easy to get judgmental about what others have caught especially when it's a large fish.

Hasn't annoyed me at all mate, just very different to how I would perceive a 'capture'

My one and only 40lber had the hook pop out as I was scooping the net up. Does it count, hell yes.
Hooked, landed, netted - can't see the problem myself.
Took advantage of a million-to-one shot.
99% of carp would have just been gone for good, if I'm in the same stupidly rare position, that fish is mine for sure.
Maybe lakes should install VAR so we can all be sure of what does and doesn't count

Just a difference opinions it looks like then.
To me you have to hook and land a fish in one swoop, if my rig isnt in its mouth when its drawn over the net then its an unfortunate loss. If the hook falls out in the net thats a different matter.

What if it falls out while the fish is halfway over the net, are you allowed to move the net to get the fish in, or do you have to stand still and hope it doesn't sink backwards?
He fished for it, hooked it, played it, landed it (with a bit of luck). Hence he caught it imo.

I see no problem at all with it counting , and from what you say , it seems he did well to land it in the end.
For me it's simple. The hook must be in the fishes mouth as it goes into the net. Otherwise you could foul hook a fish, drag it in by the fin, the fin tears as you get it near you, so you bundle it into the net. Not a capture in my book.
What happens if you play a fish in, and the hook pulls as you go to net it. The fish swims off and you find it sulking in a snag down to the side of the swim. You scoop it out of the snag? Well it's only there cos you wound it in.
For me the art of carp fishing has a defined set of skills. The ability to select an area that you think will result in a bite. The ability to construct or select a rig appropriate to the conditions. The ability to select a bait that will trick the fish into being hooked. Lastly the skills to control and land a hooked fish using rod and line to guide a fish into the net.

I would say it counts.
I cracked off on a simple easy lob 50 yards, god knows how but i did land exactly in a swim I had been pre-baiting for 6 months. The spot was just coming ripe in late autumn and I had already had a string of 20's to 29lb 10oz from there. I tried in vain to retrieve the lost rig but it was lost. Two days later a bloke on a swim up the lake had a series of one beep liners over about 30 mins whilst sat in my swim and eventually he wandered off to see what was occurring with his rods. 20 mins later he wanders back down to me saying he had a caught a fish that hadn't been out for 7 years, it was only 27lb but nice to see all the same. I took the photos and slipped it back and upon leaving his swim I noticed my rig and his rig all tangled up on top of his bivvy with around 50 yards of line all mashed up.
I asked him what that was about and he told me the fish had my rig and his rig in its mouth so he was claiming it. I knew he was chatting bo**ocks but didn't really care until I saw his face in Carp talk 3 weeks later on page 2!!!
I'm good friends with him now and it took me 12 months to get the truth about the fish out of him. As you probably guessed he just caught my trailer.. Shameful. lol
Now that doesn't count...........

personally I would never have scooped it up after the hook pull I would of looked at it been gutted but thats it
as far as I am concerned it evaded capture plain and simple no merit in netting it so never in a million years would I have done
but we are all individuals

Ignoring one beep liners for thirty mins while sat in your swim? What a bell end, and you should have told him to go check it out after the first beep not that he should have been there while his rods were out. This would have got him and possibly you banned on most decent sindycate waters.

I think it's a spur of the moment thing, you either lung or you don't. The fight had gone from rod to hand line then butterfly net so the blood is up and he reacted 'naturally' in the heat of the moment. Count or not it makes a good tale.
I didn't count an upper thirty as it was hooked in the peck - many other would have done. I caught it again a few months later so I had the last laugh.
The only rules in fishing are those made up by clubs and water owners but the ones that count most are the one's we make for ourselves.

If the hook has pulled on a fish just in front of the net and it's a simple mater of pushing the net forward and the fish goes in, I would count that as a capture and would be pleased to weight and photograph it.
Can't see anyone suddenly pulling the net back and letting it swim off saying o we'll never mind.

Ive had hook pulls when the fish is over the net and scooped them, and they have counted in my eyes, ive caught fish where ive held the line to strike played the fish with the rod underwater then handlined the fish into the net as no space for rod overhead. Ive even caught two 20s where one was hooked and the other fish followed it into the net. It all counts.

Personally I would have counted it, it took the bait and was fairly hooked (I am presuming that there was evidence that the hook had pulled from the mouth), yes the hook had pulled before it was netted, but there is no doubt that he had hooked the carp fair and square.
My pb got heavily weeded a few yards from the bank and I waded in to land it whilst my mate held my rod and kept a tight line, I have no trouble in counting that even though technically he was holding the rod when it was landed.
In another case my old fishing mate tried using deadbaits to catch some wily carp we thought never picked up angler's baits and were fry feeders, he hooked a big carp and we thought we had cracked it only to find it was hooked in the pec, he didn't count it, nor would I. It was 40+.

My first thought was to claim it but then I thought about it a bit more and wasn't so sure.
It's down to the individual but I think I would.

I have certainly read a fair few stories of the hook pinging out at the net but the carp still being landed with a lunge forward with the net before they sink out of view.
I'm sure I've had it happen more than once myself, are we counting them? I am.

I'd say it counts. That seems to be the general consensus on this thread and I would tend to agree.
The angler imho was very fortunate indeed to land it and I would say it was just his lucky day.

If you caught that 20lb+ bass and the hook came out as it hit the beach, would you grab it before a wave took it back out to sea or leave it to go on its way

but seriously
as I said its a personal thing and I dont need my ego massaged by a fish I didnt land properly
but if the hook fell out in the net as it often does thats different
and of course opinions are like bum holes we ALL have one

As long as it was hooked in the mouth during the fight and then the hook popped out but you managed to net it. Counts for me.......
Up to the angler imo
In reply to Post #30
This wasn't a case of the hook popping out as it was drawn over the net, the hook pulled close in and the fish was in shallow water. The angler then consciously made an effort to scoop up a fish he had lost/ was no longer connected to and claimed it. Seems that the majority think this is acceptable, whereas I really don't. If the hook pings out as the fish is drawn over the net then it counts. If it falls out and then you have to make an effort to scoop it up with your net it doesn't.

Does it really matter to you this much if this happens to someone and they claim it.
You wouldn't claim it this bloke did, does it really matter.

My answer to his question is it's up to the bloke who caught it if he wants to or not.

carp angling primary objective achieved.

my answer is "Yes"
The fish in question was odds on to have been stocked with the sole intention of long stay anglers catching it, coaxed with food out of sync with its own biology, nailed with a self hooking lead arrangement, made it's presence known via electronic bite indication..... and we're questioning the morality of scooping it into a net

It counts for me.
Rig worked, bait worked, spot worked, tackle worked , other than a bit of faffing around at the end its good for me.
It's only fishing......
I lived and breathed league snooker for 20 years, played a world champion at an exhibition and he fluked the black to win, do you think the frame didn't count and he handed me the win, rubbish, it's part of the game things not going as planned.

I think the discussion should continue asking if netting a second fish counts?
It doesn't by the way, it's just something that happened.
