Has anyone ever come across a guy named Peter Regan that makes bait, one of his baits is called " Meat " and he claims that the Parrot from Wasing was captured twice on it and he also does a bait called "maple " .

I belive he is based somewhere around the M25.

A long shot I know but, I am curious about this guy and his claims.

Old time Savay angler, based in Norfolk, well he was once. Tugboat. He used to write articles for carpology so if you don't get joy on here maybe contact him through them?

Hi scar,
I met Peter a couple of times on my old syndicate pit in Norfolk about 18 years ago.
He used to make those baits with a man named Dennis, don't know his surname, but they split up and the last I heard, they both continue to make those baits separately.
Dennis definitely lives in Norfolk and I think Peter still does too.
The baits they made were called meat 1, maple and multimix.
Not sure how you could get in touch, other than Google his name and Norfolk.
Can't imagine there would be many Peter Regan's in Norfolk.
BB.

I think it's the same guy who used to write a section in the back of original Carpologys, don't know if he still does?

Used to love reading his stuff, old school, very dry sense of humour, pmsl many a time

Peter is a mate of mine and yes he still makes and sells bait.
He is fishing washing at the moment and the bait is still doing the business he is top rod on there by a country mile.
I know dean fletcher caught the parrot on peters bait and still uses it today.
I think you will also find that one of the baits is producing fantastic results at welly.

This is not an advert for his bait because I do not use it myself.
You will find him on Facebook.

Peter Regan has been around 'proper' carp fishing, forever. His bait will be brilliant. How could it not be? I bet he is copying no one. I bet he knows all his own stuff, because he actually goes fishing. On proper lakes to. It's not rocket science. I'd use his bait, and I've never even met the bloke.

He's made me laugh out loud plenty of times though, through things that I have read in old mags that he had written.

I shall no doubt bump into mr regan on a couple of work parties this year. He's fecking hilarious. Genuinely has me in stitches every time I meet him. He's very guarded about bait, and doesn't give much away, but when he does open up about it, I listen.

He used to work away a lot on either ships or oil rigs, can't remember which, but I pity the guys that were stuck with him for weeks on end as he's an absolute ruthless piss taker, in a good way though.

Meat1 has been an under the radar bait for years. Catches well from tricky waters.

If you don't have any success getting hold of Pete then I'm sure I could find a way to get your details to him.

I fished Savs on the same rota as Pete. He is one of the funniest guys I have ever met and a terrific angler to boot. That s said, my abiding memory of Pete is that he wasn't at all bait minded so to hear he has a bait firm surprises me a bit. He is a terrific pike angler too. Away from fishing he skippered a huge rig supply vessel, a very demanding and dangerous job that must have at times been very scary! IIRC he worked one month on, one month off. He was so laid back when he was fishing, he made me feel tired just watching him. Mind you after working in the North Sea for a shift, I'd be bloody laid back too! I had a lot of time for Pete and I hope he has his feet up now and is enjoying retirement.

This is not his ship but you get the idea.

He also made the first bait boat (unless someone knows differently).

There is a swim named Regan's on Savay...nuff said

He definely knows his stuff mate, every bait is rolled by him from ingredients that he has sourced, ground, mixed himself, eggs are always from the same place.
Mad as a box of frogs and still doing 2-3 nights a week at nearly seventy years of age.

What, is that what he told you Ken? On a tough pit? I make out to people that I'm the biggest noddy in the world when I meet them on the bank, if at all possible. I'm great at it to. I don't wish to talk about bait while fishing, it's work. I look, nothing like I do, with no base ball cap on in real life. The base ball cap, goes on for the photo's. And comes off. I look very different then.

"I know, nothing. Only here to get away from the GF like."

If he was catching them, he probably 'knew'. If he has brought out a bait, that is catching the good ones... He definitely 'knew'.

This all stemmed from a conversation with a mate about a bloke we met years ago named Peter Regan, I could not for the life of me remember the name or the circumstances of the meeting.
My mate has met up with him again recently and started banging on about him so, I thought I would ask on here and sure enough, my memory has been stirred.
Thanks again folks.

All decent anglers will throw blinds Ken. I'm not even saying that is what he done to you, just that I would. As much as there is camaraderie in fishing, let's have it right mate... We are all there to catch them. You was at Savs to catch them, and so was Peter. No one who is catching them, is going to tell the truth about what they are doing on somewhere like that. Not unless they are stupid, and want everyone else on the lake doing it two minutes later as well. Now, Peter has to be honest about it, as he is selling bait.

The 'ones' who are catching, and claiming to be 'clueless'... These are the ones that need to be watched lol. The 'talkers' on a lake... NEVER need to be watched. Pretty simple.

You are soooo right. I just chuckled to myself when I read that, as there's a group of anglers, old school, been round the block on one of my waters. If you ever catch them off guard with a wet net or sling. They'll always tell you they've had a tench. They must have the greatest tench bait known to man. Lol.

They will be well versed, in feeling into the landing net, while five anglers are standing behind them chatting away, after landing a big fish. They will have their head turned towards the anglers chatting away, whilst at the same time, feeling the carps mouth under the water... Removing the hook bait, with a finger and thumb. Ping, gone.

"Oh look, I have two smallish holes in my net look, funny that". "The hook bait has come off during the fight to, crazy"

That's what they will be up to. And more power to their elbow to.

His meat bait was based on ground up cat biscuits

Very under rated nowadays - old Skool cat biscuits.
Another great bait on the same lines was Alan Smiths ( RIP ) Sensible baits - Savoury mix
A great bait mind.

I remember talking to Pete a fair few years ago. He lives in Oulton Broad which is just outside Lowestoft as stated previously. I live in Lowestoft so bait pick up would have easy for me but in the end I didn't go with his bait for some reason. Apparently the ground up cat biscuits according to Pete are not just normal cat biscuits but are in fact made to a specific recipe know only to him.
Rod Hutchinsons Seafood Blend base mix also used ground up cat biscuits (Purina Salmon if I recall correctly).

Very under rated nowadays - old Skool cat biscuits.

One of my best baits ever and would still use it today if I could.

8oz of ground Go-Cat (Herring)
2oz Wheat Gluten
1 Tsp of MSG
5ml of Rod Hutchinson Sea Food flavour
5ml of Cod liver oil.

For a winter bait, I would drop the seafood flavour and add a teaspoon full of Curry powder. Now that was a good bait in winter but never tried it in summer.

Not only did it do well for carp but tench loved it to. Probably the cod liver oil. Capelin oil was better than cod liver oil when I could get it. I had a friend in a fish oil factory who worked in the labs testing it and he got me loads of good stuff to try but Capelin came out tops.

Sadly, Go Cat is no longer just fish based but they stick vegetables and rabbit etc in it. Maybe it still works, maybe not.

I keep promising myself to try it, maybe this year.

Liver munchies for me, red coloured, they were the nuts.. Pet biscuits are formulated specifically so it should come as no surprise how effective they can be. Ground up and mixed with a thick liquid would make a great paste wrap.

The link between cat nutrition and carp baits is well established by those in the know. Keith Sykes told me that if the cat would eat it, so would a carp. When Trigga first came out the original Trigga powder and Trigga Liquid were sourced from a major producer of cat foods. I don't think these are currently available but I am no longer associated with Nutrabaits so cannot be sure.

Groats soaking in the original Trigga Liquid in about 1993/4.

He must be ordering serious amounts for a pet food manufacturer to take interest and make something specific to his recipe.

or the more believable line would be that he just mixing various 'ready made cat biscuits/products' to meet his bait requirements.

Weren't some of Kevin Maddocks original baits based on cat and dog foods? Wouldn't take much to dig out my Carp Fever...

I heard a rumour about the attraction source in Trigga, a silky secret I hear...
Used in a number of animal feeds as well.

That stuff was awesome, my dog would eat any boilies, but most failed the cat test; When I made Trigga boilie, my next door neighbours cat would sneak round and be pinching baits off the drying racks as fast as I made them.

Must admit I stopped following Nutrabaits when Big Bill sold up first time, although I still keep him on FB friends list.

Most cat biscuits are full of interesting ingredients and taste and appetite stimulants and oils.
Around 30% protein some of them, so good enough for a carp.
Hardest bit is grinding them down.

One of the first boiled baits I ever made was a ground down cat biscuit bait courtesy of Maddock Carp Fever. From memory it contained ground up Munchies, sodium casienate, wheat germ and semo. Stuck like **** to a blanket. Bugger to roll and doubled in size when boiled

. Don't think we caught much on it ether. And me mates mum's coffee grinder was never the same again..

Trigga:
I have a feeling after something I was told is the attraction was silkworm. Trigga came out not long after ground silkworm started being used in animal husbandry in preference to meat meals.

There was another bait company who released a very similar bait, in fact the attractor liquid packages were able to be swapped, but I also heard about industrial espionage on that, and someone in the company when he heard what happened stopped making the bait. It is the reason one bait guru and the name behind the company don't get on.

Japanese koi specialists have used Silkworm pupae for years.

Silkworm Pupae is normally given as a treat that Koi appreciate.
A known natural source for fast growth and good colour enhancement.
High protein content & easily digestible.
Cat, Dog or Carp it is a win win.

It's Marukyu and its still on the go. I use the Silkworm additive concentrate that they sell as a glug and in stick mixes but never noticed anything special about it.

Maybe I should try harder.

I use it an quite high levels of 2-300g per kilo. In live tests the baits containing SWM were approached with little cautions and eaten more or less straight away. A scoopful of the meal itself scattered under an overhanging tree, saw carp respond instantly to the fine particles that floated briefly on the surface. Larger particles were eaten on the drop. A bait dropped full of the raw SWM saw carp respond quickly to its presence and once in the swim they proceeded to rip it to shreds!

I now include it in all my baitat 100-150g/500g base mix. and I am certain it makes a difference.

Zack,
Marukyu made the announcement in January it is pulling out of the UK, and have ceased UK operations.

See if you can get the liquid additive to ferment, or become active, may make a difference.

A little bit of soft brown sugar, low level of active yeast, slowly heat then leave for a few days, might find Bob is your uncle and Fanny is your aunt😉

Anglers Mail Marukyu link

Ken,
Look at the colour of the silkworm powder, compare the smell and colour to Trigga if you can remember it...

Had to be Liver Brekkies for my bait, didn't roll well so just used to rolling pin 1/2 inch slabs & boil, cubed once cooled, excellent bait that takes me back.

4oz Semolina
4oz Red Factor
2oz Liver Brekkies
2 Tbls Vecon or Marmite
1 Tbls Parmesan Cheese
10 - 20 ml Fish Oil
3 - 5 ml Flavour

You would have to be either very old or reincarnated😉😆

The Chinese domesticated the silkworm moth about 5000 years ago. Obviously the silk is the main product, gained by boiling the pupae so the cocoon breaks into threads, but eating the pupae is now a thing...

Awesome thanks Ken. Sounds like a worthy ingredient for sure. I see many potential uses for it. Ingredients like PTX are sold on having insects in it. It seems a lot more effective just using pure insect meal now it's easily available. Savoury seed mixes, milk protein mixes all sound good matches. Perhaps at 10% in a fishmeal bait wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Found this from a study on the net -

Effects of non-defatted silkworm-pupae in diets on the growth of common carp, Cyprinus carpio
Author links open overlay panelM.C.NandeeshaG.K.SrikanthP.KeshavanathT.J.VargheseN.BasavarajaS.K.Das

Common carp fed over a period of 140 days on diets containing different levels of non-defatted pupae showed better growth with the diet containing 30% papa, without fish meal. Ten per cent and 20% of pupa in combination with 20% and 10% fish meal gave lower growth, although statistically there was no difference between different treatments. Digestibility of protein and fat from pupa diets was better than that from the fish meal control diet. Significantly higher deposition of protein, fat and ash was recorded with diets having 20% and 30% pupa. Experimental diets had no influence on organoleptic quality in terms of colour, odour, texture and flavour. The results show that non-defatted pupa could replace fish meal in the diet of common carp, without affecting growth and quality.

Just for the record, when I knew Pete at Savay from 1988 - 1992 he never showed the slightest interest in bait, but then none of us did back then. I am never said nor inferred that he knows nothing about the subject. If anything his reticence on the subject simply reinforces my belief that he knows a lot more than he ever let on. Proper old school is that.

I also also on the same rota as Bernie Heerey (aka. Heerey The Theory) a bait man's bait man. He was pretty tight lipped too as I recall.

Hell, fishing is cack at moment, no-ones catching. hammering down with rain, blowing a gale, freezing, but I upped the amount of Maryku silkworm stuff in my stickmix and just dragged an 18lber out an hour ago.

But there again, I changed my stick mix this week too to crushed go-cat to try and see if it was still any good from years ago. So it may not have been the silkworm stuff.

But when the fishing is cack, a fish is a fish.

Hi guys, yes Pete still does bait to those who know how to get it from him
The famous Meat One is now called M2 and virtually identical, very yeasty/Minamino,livery type smell.
all of his baits have out-fished most if not all of todays ready available so called wonder baits,Sticky,Mainline etc... on venues far and wide.as mentioned before he had to adjust the original recipe on the Meat One as he was unable to maintain supply of certain products.
He also does several other very good mixes, some have been catching carp for over 30 years.all very good.
Just like the great man himself his baits are legendary around East Anglia area and used on the QT by alot of very famous anglers on the circuit.
Lastly, dont forget the Parrot at Wasing, among scores of others succumbed to the Meat at 68lb to his good friend Dean Fletcher a couple of years ago, enough said really.
Top man and top bait.

Yeah but imagine dealing with him.

I'm not sure I'm man enough to take the abuse.

Im not sure what you mean by that as Petes a treat to deal with, certainly knows his stuff as you would expect from someone with his experience and people he has spent time on the bank with over the years,he is also one of the funniest and best story tellers ive come across, just one hour in his company and your ribs will ache,i just wish he would write a book of his experiences as he has alot he could pass on to the young wannabees regarding not only his thoughts on bait but on how carping used to be back in the good old days and should be rather than the state its in today.

It was a joke. I meant you just know you'd get a proper mauling every time you placed an order. In a nice way. I've been on the receiving end of his ruthless piss taking. I don't know him well, only met him over the years on work parties. He's a proper character and I can't imagine anyone not liking him. On the few occasions I've been in the same group as him he's had me in stitches and he wouldn't know me from Adam.

He's one of those blokes who you just cannot take offence too, no matter how offensive he is being towards you! A fantastic character.

Pete seems to only sell to those he knows or other contacts know you. He doesn't post out, but I got the impression from him if you are local enough or fish waters he or close friends are on then you may get hold of it......

Too much hassle. I'll go down to Essex and get some of Kenny's bait instead.
