Hi all After watching the latest release from Korda, I have made enquiries about the Broome venue as it's on my doorstep. Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on the Embryo projects and fisheries.

As did around 500 other people... Glad I got my name down for broom before that was released. They are doing good work, the other big manufacturers should follow suit, after all who is going to sell much carp tackle if there aren't any carp left...

Well apart from fencing an otter in. Great work that! There was some good fish in there at one point too.

I can't see anything too bad about a project that protects fishing for future generations. All the ‘bosh' ‘get in' ‘ thank you my love' might get a bit tiring, but Danny could have ridden off into the sunset with his millions. Instead he's chosen to put his hand in his pocket and spend his own hard earned money fencing other clubs waters for no return and trying to produce quality safe angling venues that anyone can get into. I totally applaud him for that.

And as an added bonus it keeps him out of my waters.

Brilliant work. Other large carp businesses should help out too. Won't sell much tackle or bait if there's hundreds of lakes with little or no fish in them due to predation.

As others have said protecting the future of carp fishing cannot be bad! The team are doing a lot more for angling than a lot of the companies out there who are generating huge profits and should be following suit without question!

It certainly does. I have met Danny and this embryo business is no joke. He is passionate about it. Ever the consummate businessman, of course this will generate good pr for Korda but that is not the aim. He is already a rich man.

Other companies have done nothing comparable against our biggest threat. They deserve similar support from ourselves....none.

I genuinely believe he is doing for the right reasons, the problem with erecting fences around lakes is that it does put enormous pressure on the areas that can't be protected.

It's great to see a tackle manufacturer putting something back into angling. I read Danny's interview in Carpworld a couple of years ago when he first set it up and was very impressed by what he said.

I know you pay a bit of “carp tax” when you buy from any big manufacturer but with Korda I don't mind doing so now as I know some of it is benefiting the sport. If I'm getting a few bits and bobs from the tackle shop I will go for Korda now if there all fairly similar.

I think the others are missing a trick by not supporting this project as I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels like this.

Something we agree on....ive been saying it for years...

What impact are we having on the larger environment for shrinking the food source of an apex predator...what impact are we having by fencing out other wildlife whilst those enclosed are safe..
We are almost creating a false environment

Might just make the otters show it's less than cuddly side to the public ,as it searches for food , a few domestic kills etc might have the desired effect ,
Or
Like most wild animals , as it food source diminishes , so mother nature takes over and numbers dwindle .
Of course if we could fence every lake ,we could speed up this process .

From a carp fishing point of view I can't see anything but good with the Embryo project.
Fencing fisheries has both positive and negative impacts on nature in general.
The coots and moorhens seen to have a very high survival rate at my place, the ducks don't fare so well, a local heron has realised that there are more ducklings available at my place than other nearby waters and likes their taste!
It's sad that the deer can no longer visit but at least they still have access to water outside of the fence.
The rabbits are a nightmare now that the foxes can't get at them and I'm going to have to take measures to reduce their numbers.

That's just the way I'm starting to view the Otter problem Paul

~ I was helping the EA a few weeks back doing a netting of a fenced lake, to remove some of the over abundance of Silvers & Perch, 80-100kg got removed off memory. Where did they go – into an un-fenced Res, right next to the Otter infested Leeds & Liverpool Canal! Could not help thinking “That's a lot of Otter Food”

Hi All Really appreciate everyones' opinions on this thread. Wasn't sure which way it would go as usual threads with regards to Korda/DF were generally negative to say the least. Im with the majority on this .. ie in favour of what he is doing. Can see that fencing such venues and excluding predators can create an issue elsewhere as a food source is removed from the system. However preserving/creating a fishery wherever it is using proven models such as the others in the Embryo portfolio can only be commended. Its just possible others may jump on the DF /Embryo wagon now that it can be looked on as a success, albeit on a fairly limited basis. It will be interesting to see how Stanton fares now its in new ownership

I fished Cawcutts (we called it The Post House Lake) for £35 a year when it as under club control. I bet it costs a lot more now... it was stuffed with crayfish at the time and the noise from the A14 was awful. Also, we had a lot of trouble with those traveller folk camped down the road... tackle thefts, poaching, car break ins and them having beach parties by the lake, including swimming in it... may be the crays have been sorted, the folk down the road moved on... and I know that otter fencing has gone up, security improved and the carp stock boosted, but I'd pass on fishing there for more than a day, as I think your hearing would be impaired after a few sessions! We even used to get missiles being lobbed at us from the road bank - pizza boxes, bottles, cans, you name it. Even a red bra came floating down and settled next to my rods on one occasion...

A trivial amount. So little it makes little sense to run the process and criminalise people every year.

EA expenditure £1,300M https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/629778/LIT10667.pdf
Rod license sales £20.3M https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/678380/Annual_fisheries_report_2016_to_2017.pdf

I can't help wondering just how much of Anglers Licence Fee money is actually inadvertently being used to feed and help the spread of Otters, plus also providing a sustainable diet for the Cormorants ?

In other words are we actually paying to grow our own problem?

Unless the re-stocking of Un-fenced water (Inc. Rivers) is needed due to a pollution incident. It makes no sense at all to me to keep re-stocking, for the then stocked fish to become “Cannon Fodder” for the un-controlled predator population, seems just a waste of money to me.

Exactly, natures wildlife will always moderate its numbers on the food sources available to it.
Lots of food, numbers boom.
Lack of food, only the strongest survive, and numbers dwindle to naturally substainable numbers.

I don't think it's a co-incidence that rod license sales are falling. I believe they are DOWN 40% in the last ten years, yet the cost of purchasing one has gone UP. If Adults aren't purchasing them, that means there kids aren't fishing neither, but why?

My main concern is the accessibility aspect of venues in regards to getting youngsters into the sport. Removing "nuisance" fish is part and parcel of what gets kids hooked on fishing in the first place. These "fallow" waters people speak of are the ones kids walk/ride to with a rod strapped to their bike frame. If we get what some wish for, all lakes will be like fort knox "syndicates" whereby access for a dad and lad is nigh on impossible. I used to live in an area where there were 20 lakes within a 5min drive of my house, yet I had to drive 30 minutes if I wanted to just go and fish on a whim and know i'll catch a few. Something to think about when a mum/dad is looking for a place to take their kid fishing for the first time.

20 year ago, my dad paid 50 quid and 25 for me per year for 3 lakes. Today, the same three waters, with less fish, are separate "syndicates" costing over 600 quid pus joining fees. Now, who in there right mind will take that punt? Just spend 30 quid on Fortnite and the kid is happy. There is barely anything out there to promote the sport, and when you want to buy a few floats and hooks, you can't because the local shop has died a death because it can't compete with the big online retailers.

Something else which I don't think is a co-incidence is the rise of urban fishing, "naughty" fishing, and the blatant "it's OK not to pay" mentality. Why pay 200 quid for the off chance of a 30 when you can just pop on google maps, find a canal/river lock/marina and catch the same sized fish on the sly? or even better, for nothing? It's always happened I guess, with the only difference being is the fish are not being moved into "syndicates" in the same rates as they were previously (I was being offered cash in the late 2000's to top up a syndicate in Eseex). Many are starting to see, (as has been said) the whole fenced off bark chipping/wooden platform setting as artificial, and they don't fancy paying the rates asked of them, to fish for the same named fish caught by many of the "syndicate" members.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work undertaken to protect businesses, but if this is our future, You'll see the dwindling numbers of anglers dwindle, to the point where we'll be behind our locked gates, moaning that there is no zig foam in the country because AD didn't get their shipment from China

Cracking post that mate and I can relate to a lot that you have mentioned

Long time ago I used to say it will be exclusive syndicates if you want a bit of decent fishing or nothing much left at all sadly. Enter the otter and this has just accelerated this for me

It's the commercialism that's killing it for me. So much for been at one with nature doing a bit of fishing!

Tell your where it's all gone wrong for me. The death of angling clubs. They used to run and maintain all the waters, most of these anglers are now carp bashing and the clubs don't support this so let the waters go. Couple this with over hyped sales pitch and the need for fame this is where we are now. It's a sad state of affairs and removes the foundations away from where most started out sadly. I could see it coming years ago. When everybody has completely had enough, I will just say, told you so

Soulless stock fish in Soulless waters at a premium for the pleasure. It's just pure business now for most places, things are not done at club level decisions with the anglers and a committee etc. where it was about fishing! It's about pounds and pence and as much of that as possible now £

Fully agree. A lot of what I found so enthralling 20+ years ago when i started was wondering around little ponds match fishing. Out on the broads in a row boat with my dad and a box of maggots was a highlight of the month for me. It was never about the size of the fish but the atmosphere that I loved. Now with the emergence of comfortable swims spread mere metres apart with little bankside vegetation remaining is the stuff of nightmares for me. Some are better than others mind you, and I commend the owners for keeping sensible rules which I imagine causes them to lose out on money. I also understand that its not financially possible for some and they need to go along with the trends that most anglers are setting... Maybe im just getting old now

That said as a project I cant commend Danny and the guys involved enough in trying to help.. I just wish it was financially viable to fence a lake and let it grow naturally with limited swims and anglers.. sadly this will never be the case for commercial fisheries so they are balancing it as best they can.

Having dealt with embryo personally I can only say that they are doing something that will eventually give us all somewhere to fish. The rate at which lakes were being lost to otters was nothing short of incredible. They have for now, given us hope and a future. They help out with fisheries they do not control too and have helped many club lakes, private syndicates and day tickets to survive. In the end it will spread out the U.K. anglers which May take some pressure off the other lakes which we were all cramming on to and that can only be a good thing. Fishing has changed and I too miss the club lakes. The club waters were often the middle ground for the average man who could buy a ticket for 100 quid and access big fish and different species. Someone had to step in and do something, and they are doing things properly. It's a big thumbs up for me

Anything that promotes and protects fishing is good, although I am not of the opinion that carp or tench only is good.

I think we need to go back to more mixed fisheries.

Overstocking waters by man is not good, we need natural predation, perch, pike, herons.

I've been a carp angler since 1990, and a member of an embryo lake for the last two years. I can honestly say it's one of the friendliest and best run syndicates I've been on.

As for DF he's a regular angler on the lake and just like any other member, he owns the place but you wouldn't know it , he just gets on with his fishing , also one of the first to congratulate you on a capture or to offer to take pics of fish if needed.

I moved to this syndicate as my previous one had otters arrive and I couldn't stand watching the slow demise of that fishery which couldn't be fenced as it is a NT country park .

Can't say anything but good about Embryo 👍👍

Totally agree Nick it should be multi species and balanced not just carp, it gives anglers different options throughout the year, I hope they see that eventually. On my embryo syndi the carp have now successfully spawned 3 years in a row, this has become a huge issue as its infested with tiny carp! No silvers in there to predate on the fry!

I think a lot of good has come from Korda. They have made other tackle companies up their game in many ways. I can not think of one product which has not been bettered by another company. During the 2000's they were bringing out revolutionary stuff, a lot of it being first editions which inevitably had their flaws and were then "copied" and improved upon by others. For that, I am thankful I no longer have cut offs and bent hooks!

On the media side of things, once again, people took a concept and expanded on it. If it wasn't for the underwater videos and "masterclass" videos, we may not see the quality content we have now.

Korda has always been a product based company. Every free DVD or publication has been with the aim of selling a product. Other companies have adopted the "heritage" way of looking at things. E.S.P and Sticky being two of them. Their videos are very well recieved and watched, and don't have the sheer amount of mundane rig tutorials and product placements seen.

I saw one the other day of a bloke in France, just caught his PB, and his first thing to do was to thank X bait company and Y hook (mass produced in China and sold on eBay). Urgh.

As for Nash, they are like Marmite to me. I enjoy the Eurobanx and Urban Banx productions, however I have no interest in spending anymore money on Hooliguns, BP5's and 4 Play Pods...

Can't say I have watched the newer stuff. The older stuff was all promotion and there's only so much I can take of that and certain presenters. I find them awfully painful. Knob head would be the word I'm looking for

As for products. They make decent gear. As for development the skyliner spod was something else for sure at the time. I'm struggling to think of much more. Everything's a copy cat isn't it. To be fair, i don't care. Very rare I use their gear these days

Me jealous?

I have absolute respect for Danny Fairbrass getting his backside out and about into tackle shops selling his leads himself, that takes a lot of time, travel and effort.
However, I am not keen on some of the tackle that they have come up with, that personally I think, please note that, I think, has not been designed with carp safety in mind. I also find it annoying that should I buy a Korda Lead clip I should have to buy a Korda swivel to fit it. Size 8 swivels may be size 8 but they are NOT all the same size!

I also got put off by advertorial, a cheap article that was more advert than anything, but other manufacturers have done the same since, as they need to compete.

Yes, Ali Hamidi winds me up, from The Big Fish Off to some of the Monster Carp episodes, I just wish he would keep his mouth shut, and I read an article he wrote on Gigantica that annoyed me, something to do with extending a session and ignoring a family members birthday. If I did that to my parents I would be looking out for a horses head in my bed...

As I said earlier in the thread, Embryo are protecting our fishing, which obviously we need to do. Buying or renting fisheries, then putting stock in is important, and something we as anglers need.
My other comment though still stands, we need mixed fisheries, not just carp, and we need younger anglers, children to be fishing.
Sadly local clubs are losing waters, some are going commercial day ticket, others are going syndicate.
It is these local clubs that could do with support from us as anglers.
