Guys i need some help, ive been taking my little boy to a club water and were getting more and more into our method feeder fishing.
This lake is small but absolutely ramo with tiny roach and we want to get through to some of the better fish, tench, crusians, perch larger roach carp etc
Ive tried lunchon meat, sweetcorn, maggots and chopped boilie. (I know perch will be more maggot)
Problem is getting through the smaller fish as the bait dont stay on more than 30s!
Ive been using a inline method feeder with a size 10 hook, is this ok or should i be using a different method?
Should i be using a hair or straight on the hook?
Any tips you guys have that can help, hes loving catching 30 or 40 tiny roach but its getting boring!

Have you tried a plastic bait, on a hair, if it's allowed at your club water? Small fish tend to reject it more quickly, before getting hooked, in my experience. Or a much bigger bait, such an 8-12mm pellet? That said, it is a problem with method fishing; a pal of mind catches with a small bare hook buried in the ground bait when the mood takes him

Need to go bigger on the hookbait, and keep it solid skinned. Everything on your bait list is fair game for little fish, and they will still ‘peck' at large lumps of meat and the edge of broken boilies.
Larger tench etc have no problem tackling 12 and even 15mm boilies. So I would be fishing whole round or dumbell boilies at those sizes, on a hair rig. Still gonna get nuisance ‘yank' bites from smaller fish, even full takes from ambitious ones, but it will keep it to a minimum.
Another option is to switch to simple leger with a bomb, instead of feeder. Less groundbait will attract fewer nuisance fish.

I had the same problem,sorting the bigger roach,rudd and hybrids in a pool with zillions of small fish..
Remove the feeder and fish a simple running lead
Only feed rock hard baits ,that are directly on the lake floor,and only put around 5 freebies around your hookbait..
I used 10mm boilys from the Mirage baits range,with a no 6 shot on a longish hair on a size ten barbless..the addition of that shot meant I only got proper takes,I also use a custom swingtip rod ,which makes a mega difference to indication,far better than a black plastic beeping thing ,and far better than a quiver tip..
I tried fake corn,all I got was low double figure carp.,which wasn't what I wanted..

I went down our local club/park lake with the kids yesterday, they were bagging up on silvers a chuck on maggot whilst I was going for the decent head of tench in there. I had a rod on method feeder and struggled, using a variety of baits with lots of little knocks as the smaller fish were attacking the feeder. I ended up catching a few when switched to a lead setup, small mesh bag of pellets and a 12mm wafter on a basic hair rig

Try pellet, either soft ones on the hook or hard ones with a bait band. Deffo pop in your local shop, if they are any good they will put you straight

What I have noticed when carp fishing in the edge over particles [ Pigeon Conditioner ]is the baiting pyramid works for the Roach & Perch when they find the feed, interesting to see.
Maybe bait a spot and keep it topped up but don't fish it for a while, these small roach around this time of year can clear around a kilo of particle an hour on my waters unless the carp turn up quickly!

Definitely a hair rigged mini boilie or drilled pellet is the way to go. They're also easy to bury in your method ball.

I use method feeder almost exclusively here and abroad and don't get pestered too much by Roach although some so still hang themselves on a Size 4 Crank
I'd up your hook size until the small fish stop being a nuisance, try a size 8, I prefer a curved hook for method. I will use a 12mm pop up, 15mm bottoms butterflied )(, 1/2 bottom/half pop up.
As you want to target Tench try enterprise corn skins stuffed with a pellet or paste, same re enterprise pellet skins, a very good bait presentation and not species selective.
I used to use a hair but these days find myself using sliding rig ringed bait screws or a hair attached to a rig ring that slides on the hook with a hook bead to stop it. Just make a loop of material you use for a hair rig, pass it through the ring then through itself, don't even have to tie it on that way. Gone are the days of a ruined hair ruining a perfectly good rig.

Cane rod, a centrepin, and some sweetcorn, anything else is cheating.
