Our grandson lives with us permanently, he's 5. I'm slowly going to start to take him fishing starting this summers holidays.
What is the best rod length for someone so young? I'm thinking 6 ft but would 10 ft be more future proofed or would this be too long?

You can also get 8ft carp rods which korum do they do the opportunist x in 8ft in 2lb and 2.5lb if you want to go down 6ft rods sonik do the 6ft xtractor rods as do Nash do 6ft scope or dwarf rods . Also the tackle box in Kent do a 6ft rod in their darent valley range of rods

When my boy started I got him a cheap and cheerful ngt 6ft 2lb tc and Tbf it's not a bad little for for very little money

Try a 3m whip
That's what I bought for our grandson
About the same age
Let him have a go for easier species first as he won't sit there longer than about an hour
Sitting waiting for carp may have the opposite effect

I have 6ft spinning rods for my kids of a similar age. Gives a really nice playing action and seems to be a manageable length. Also means it can be used for float fishing for silvers through to light carp fishing. Rods aren't expensive these days so personally happy to buy longer once their older rather than try and get something to last.

I took my friends 9 year old for the first time last summer.
Look out for the Angling Direct get kids fishing promotion (they have one every summer).
They give away a free kids starter kit (whip, pole rig, some bait) to anyone U16 as long as the adult with them spends £10 in the shop.

I taught my son to cast a float with a 6ft rod at that age. Unfortunately he didn't get the fishing bug, but he has caught fish and knows the basics, should be wish to fish in later life. My dad taught me the same with a 6ft fibreglass rod at the age of 6.

I start the grand kids off at 4 yrs old ish with a cheap Ali express 6 ft lure rod tied direct to the tip.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a child’s rod please? My sons 5 he’s been using a cheap one from go outdoors and on the first session we managed to snap the reel handle. It’s his second or third time so he’s getting the hang of letting his finger go on the cast and picking it up really well for his age. Hence the reason for wanting to stick with a rod and reel combo rather than the whip. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

So i recently took my best mates lad fishing for a few hours....
I bought a 3m elasticated whip & a waggler rod from Guru... they have just started doing set ups now for new starters/children which are reasonably budget friendly and you get everything you need (rig, plummet, disgorger etc in them)
We used both but in all honesty the whip was better suited for him when used with a rod rest to take some of the weight off it.
As some of the original comments say... keep it short and go somewhere where you will catch from the off.... i managed 4 hours and we had about 10 skimmers and a mirror about 6lb. He was buzzing by the end but shattered.... highlight was after the 4 bream he started calling them snotters himself 😂😂😂

Its great fun playing carp, he uses an OMC whip when the bite alarms are silent, loves it!
