Totally right,it is common sense.

Here's something to think about..my neighbour,he passed on ,his son lives 8 hrs away ..came down to sort out the cottage..

In a nutshell,absolutely everything this chap owned was put in a skip,family pic,clothes...you name it,someone's whole life ,just chucked in a soulless skip and dumped..

I thought ,wow...all that stuff and memories,and meant nothing to the son..

Thats why I think the way I do..

I agree it's mostly common sense, however I've definitely been victim to marketing, trends, new shiny shiny in the past that's been totally unnecessary..... but the MAIN thing I found useful from the film was chucking stuff!!! (I wasn't doing that bit!!!)

It's quite an enjoyable process to be fair, especially when you can sell / donate items that are no longer required.

My grandad always told me " buy the best , eventually you won't be satisfied with second best." Trouble is nowadays people won't save to buy what they need or want. Also something "better" is advertised every few weeks. Schools don't teach people to be able to discriminate any more.

When my nan passed in the late 1990's I got the best item going, which is still part of my gear, her old kettle. It has been used on Aga, range, open fire and now my gas stoves.

I am of the belief that if you buy quality you buy it once

However, in an era of mass produced Chinese crap been pedalled with extortionate mark ups I believe you are right in a lot of cases, fishing being a prime area

Daiwa and the older Shimano reels (not the stuff covered in cheap plastic bling) Century and Harrison rods and a few other brands are still reliable for me. Other than a few brands you can trust in the rest is a lottery for me, a market full of mass produced crap 💩

The funny thing is that the tackle companies have hiked up the prices of their mass produced crap so much that it costs almost as much as, or sometimes more than, UK made products. For example, I have no idea how many of the top brands can justify luggage which costs almost as much or more than the equivalent item sold by Cotswold Aquarius - the quality is typically nowhere near as good.

And at one time I thought £500 for a tent was madness, now they are close to a grand or above with “accessories” (bolt ons £££). Wonder when we will be paying £1500 for something with a true value of around £50

Lets be honest what more do we need once we have the basics unless it's a set of circumstances where certain items might need changing, otherwise it's buying for the sake of it which is fine as some like to have the latest stuff.

I have very little equipment but it's tried & tested, I only change if I feel it has cost me fish or something breaks, hardly spend anything on tackle it generally goes on various baits, tickets, travel.

I do have to be careful in the tackle shop as it all looks so good!

Every time you go into the tackle shop you end up seeing 'shiny', and suddenly the wallet is empty.

Packet of hooks priced £5.99 and suddenly £30 is gone...
