A local club water to me has introduced a ban on floating pet feed keeble on one of the waters they run. Apparently feed of this type is detrimental to a fishes health in large amounts. This is the first time I've heard this. Is there any truth in this??. Have any other waters introduced such bans. Or is this all just sudo science. Introduced by committee members who don't really no what there talking about.

Is it just dog mixers that are banned?
I know some waters have banned floater fishing full stop but from what I remember usually down to waterfowl issues.

It's not made up of much and gets mopped by fish and wildfowl anyway. Can't see it being a major detriment. I've had carp swimming around squiring out orange from the sheer amount of cat biscuits they're eating.
Sounds like floating pellet only, which will be more beneficial for the fish in the long run I guess.
Weird one this imo

It's likely just a match orientated committee making daft decisions like a lot of clubs do. That's the joys of club waters unfortunately

I expect we both belong to the same club. Publicity bans mean no names. They are saying only floaters specifically made and sold as fish feed can be used . No information provided as to the rationale for the rule change. Having said that I know there have been problems with birds getting hooked up recently. How ducks are supposed to know the difference is beyond me..

Only floaters bought from tackleshops. Or floating pellet bought from the club allowed. The irony is most of the floaters sold in shops are just oversprayed dry pet food..

This ban is now apparently applied to all the club waters. Love me floater fishing
Looks like I'll now be paying 4 quid a kilo for floating trout pellet. Where before I was paying that amount for 5 kilo of dog mixer. This in some way will restrict the amount people will use
Which is what the club is maybe hoping to achieve. 5 kilo limit.. but to say floating dry pet food causes digestive issue in the fish is a load of nonsense..

Do you make any of your bait yourself ? If I were you, I'd be using a base mix containing a good proportion of shrimp shell meal, krill, soya isolate or a combination of all three. I've accidentally produced floating baits years ago when using these ingredients. You can use this mix to produce round boilies, pellets, cubed floater cake, etc. This will get get round the bait ban and also probably cost you less than 4 quid a kilo, depending on ingredients. You could also start with a ready-made base mix and add bicarb. Ultimately, it all depends on whether or not you can be bothered 😊.

No haven't made bait in years.. do t think the Mrs would appreciate it.. Makes me appreciate me mum more. The stuff she used to put up with in her kitchen. Nothing like the support of your Mum for your passion.

Floater cake that's a blast from the past. Dint think I've got the time or the patience to prepare the quantity I'd need for the way I floater fish.

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and pay the extra for the expander pellet. The thing is I wouldn't mind doing it. If there was concrete evidence that not using specifically designed fish feed was detrimental to the fishes health. It's like the peanut saga all over again. Over Zealous committee members introducing restriction backed up with no real evidence.

Anyone know the cheapest place to buy Floating Fish pellet..

Mixers full of oil.. there's probably more oil getting through the Straits of Hormuz than on the Mixers I use.

I know the reason.. This is the same club that once banned bivvys and un hooking mats..

I was just curious to find out whether there was any truth in the reasons given.. I rest my case your honour..

I've still got one in the attic. I had to sell a cradle they banned as well. For a club that is now primarily a carp oriented one. The committee seem intent on making it as hard to catch their
Fish as possible. I'm all for deterring the trophy hunting media hounds, however it's just making catching and getting a swim bloody hard.. 2 rod limit from 3 on some waters, yet others are 3 rod. There is a 10 plus year waiting list now. Why punish members who have been paying their subs for 46 years. Duw mae'n annodd.

floating pet feed keeble

You mentioned Keeble, pending the brand some a full of oil

You mentioned they don’t like carp anglers, could it be due to birds eating them and potentially being caught?

The birds don't no the difference between floating pet feed or trout pellet. They can quite easily get hooked up on both.

There have been instances on one of the waters which is also a day ticket. Of anglers not being ti vigilant when using floating baits. Not a good look with the Public ( Also a park )..

The Mixers i use are the cheap ones from the big chain petshops. So don't really know about the nutritional make up or oil content of the 101 brands that are out there. But judging by the price of them I thought they would be pretty good. Probably on a par with dedicated floating fish pellet.

I think the club just want to limit the amount used. And forcing anglers to use a more expensive pellet might help with that. But seeing as one of the waters is public access. Good luck with that..

All club type waters have to deal with the lowest bar of angling and as such it feels unfair on others, but I get it. The cost of club tickets are lower and as such it means when they see a potential issue they have to work out an enforceable rule that will work across the board.

Be it naturals, mixers, nuts then you will always get club members who think more and more will bring success - you go from one successful angler using a handful to the next in line doubling and the spiral goes on.

Maybe it's the expense of syndicate type lakes or the management of them, but they will always be more respectful or members swiftly removed. It's the one upmanship of modern day carping I'm afraid and I would imagine kilos and kilos of cheap pet food mean the bird life are encouraged, probably hooked on a regular basis, the rats have a ready supply of washed up rotting bait and the fish diet is skewed by volume alone.

It will always be the sledgehammer to crack a nut but for the future of angling, clubs are the lifeblood and mean hungry developers or greedy syndicate owners will never get their hand on committee run waters.

Some good points there.. I suspect that's the real reason for the ban

Quote... There is a 10 plus year waiting list now. Why punish members who have been paying their subs for 46 years

I done my first ever night carp fishing on one of these waters Mark. I grew up fishing around this clubs waters. IMO it's a terrible and very shocking decision regarding the publicity ban. I know people will come forwards and say that "he would say that". But it's terrible for carp fishing. It's a family run club. It's focus has always been on the youth. Now that youth are not allowed to show their photos or even mention the names of the lakes. Carp fishing is killing itself. Very selfish old men, make decisions that effect the very past times future in its own right. People go fishing for fun, to enjoy themselves. To smile and have a good time. When they catch fish, they like to show their catches proudly. This in essence stifles that.

Imagine golf, or tennis, or any other pastime saying.... "Yeah we don't like all the youngsters enjoying themselves.... We'll put publicity bans on Wimbledon, onto the British Open" etc. It would never happen because it's pure selfish stupidity.

Anyone who pipes up that these things are done for the good of the past time, are just behind these things for their own very selfish reasons. The Colne Valley went this way. It kills the enjoyment for so many, just to keep a few older people on committee's happy. Theale lagoon, fair enough... The Cons, it's always been that way. But it does not make it right.

Old fisherman, don't like others catching carp and enjoying themselves. It's always been that way. They don't like how popular carp fishing has become. When family clubs start implementing publicity bans because a certain fish got big... Things are going badly wrong within carp fishing. They had no problems showing their photos when they wanted to, and they did.

All my personal opinion. One of my oldest friends is on the committee. In my opinion is so very wrong. I have photos of 50's this week caught from the club water. I have photos of five years olds with the most epic carp. Can't be shown. That's just wrong for that child.

We should be encouraging the kids to love it.... Not making them think they have done something wrong by catching a big carp.

Going back some years DDAPS banned unhooking mats for a while then allowed them but only if they were covered with a bin liner.
Something to do with diseases said the the match orientated committee

This is the same club being spoken about now Bob. These things are always reactionary. The club has now got a lake with really big fish in. That has not really been the case for decades. One of which will break the British record soon. It's no coincidence in my mind, that this was reaction to Lockey doing the Korda podcast after catching that fish, and saying exactly that regarding the record. Within a week, anglers were telling me there was a publicity ban being spoken about. Just reaction from people who don't like it. But reaction that effects and upsets so many anglers. It's the same with the mixers... People start catching a lot of fish on a certain method... BAN IT. Reactions, but not good ones.

The lake in question seems to be causing numerous problems since the fish got massive. Bob Morris's house backed onto the lakes. He had been around that club and intwined in it forever. They fenced over his back gate and blocked his access to the lake, or something similar a few years back. It was all kicking off for a little while. I'm pretty sure from what I was told, Bob helped them get the lake in the first place.

A club with a now ten year waiting list... Lakes are all totally secure... So what is the publicity ban suddenly for? Everyone knows about Moonscale now anyway. We live in a time of British records likely being forgotten about due to tank grown fish... Finally, a proper club, with real history that goes back to the dawn of carp fishing will have the biggest fish in the land.

That should be screamed about. Older gentlemen who no longer fish make these decisions. They look at young lads catching 50's & now 60's, reasons then need to be found to quash that. It should be being celebrated, not covered up in my opinion. It's madness that a family orintated club which are the bedrock of Kent fishing really, have decided to do this.

Hopefully sense will be seen and it will not last forever. They are a truly great club. They finally have a pit that contains a lot of very big and growing fish. Putting a publicity ban on the whole club because of that, is totally crazy in my opinion.

They do so much to get kids into fishing, but this is the total opposite of that.

Agreed. But where do you draw the line Jeff? There are open access to the public venues with monster carp in. Public walking around all day. These club venues are all fenced in and secured venues. If people jump the gate to poach, that's the clubs responsibility to deal with that. No one is going to nick the biggun or any of the others from there. They are now to well known. Making a publicity ban does not protect any fish from being stolen. It's just the type of excuses that get rolled out when decisions like this are made. To many enquiries more like.... So instead of just embracing the situation, people start penalising the clubs members instead.

It's a very self centred attitude. If everyone does the same thing, carp fishing will die on its arse within twenty five years.

When I fished on Theale Lagoon, there had not been a publicly known bite for near on two years. I had four bites in three days. When I caught the common, I kept it all quiet for a month (because I knew exactly what would happen). On the day I let people know I had caught these fish, a publicity ban was brought in, on that exact same day... Just a few hours later to be precise.

That's the way that this stuff works. In the exact same way as Martin (nothing wrong whatsoever) doing the Korda podcast clearly upset whoever in the club, that's exactly when the reaction came. Not because people were jumping any gates.

It's just over zealous. It's just exerting control over others joy. It's the worst part of carp fishing. We are all custodians of carp fishings future. Our current generation in seats of power don't seem to give two hoots about the future of the past time really. Like I said in my previous post, we should be enabling the younger generation to enjoy our hobby. Not making them feel like they did something wrong for catching some bloody fish.

It amazes me how certain people who sell you tickets to their lakes (to catch carp)... Don't really want you to catch the fish whatsoever if truth be told.

I thought that a ban on floating pet food was the issue ? You mentioned publicity bans and the topic seems to have gone in that direction. Are you sure that this club actually has a publicity ban, because I've just looked at the gallery on their website and there are loads of photos. One of a particularly massive fish as well. Venue maps / descriptions, locations, etc.all included.

My comments had zero to do with Marks comment in post 5 which I quoted. My comments come from actually knowing about it from real life experience from a couple of months ago. Same as Mark & Jeff would know full well, as far as I know they are both members. It's probably not best for them to even speak about it.

Whatever an out of date website says, you are questioning people who actually know. The fact there are photos of the fish still all over their website speaks volumes. Yet I'm told people have already been banned for posting photos since the publicity ban came in recently.

My words from my first post below. I actually have 3 x 40's & 1 x incredibly stunning 50+ that was caught in the past week on our hook baits from that venue. Plus photos of children with big carp from this week from other club waters. None are allowed to be shown.

The club has a full publicity ban now.

Thanks for the clarification. If indeed the club wants to fly under the radar with regards their fish / venues, then it just seems crazy to have it on their website. Maybe an updated website is planned, who knows.
