What would be the recommendation for smaller rods 9ft, not a massive fan of bait runners. I've looked at the ultegra 5500 is there any others that would be recommended?

Okuma Inc 6000 or either of the 2 x Daiwa's in post#2.
PS - don't get second hand Inc 6000's as the older models had a problem with the anti reverse.

I just picked up some penn rival longcast 6000 for my 10ft ones. Not used in anger yet but feel quality and decent size for the 10ft should work on the 9s

I've got the Ultegra 5500's on my 9fts. They come with a spare spool and spares are readily available. I've had mine 6 years now.
The drags are a bit crap but easily upgraded, I use 2 ptfe washers and 1 felt.

I use Okuma inc 6000 on my 10ft rods and am thrilled with both performance and price !
They really have surprised me and the clutch is sublime.

interesting .... when did Okuma bring out the mk2 version that fixed the problem then? or how do you know which models were updated?

Daiwa Whisker 25 qda. Balance lovely same weight as ci4 shimano but have a shorter handle and just feel nicer.
I've had a look at the okumas they look good. So do the Daiwas. Im going to see if I can get my hands on some over the weekend and see how they feel!

So I bought 3 x Okuma 6000 reels about 4 years ago for my 10' setup. I noticed after a while that there was a problem with the anti reverse - when you had a fish on and it was under load, the reel would backwind with the anti reverse on. Not a huge problem admittedly, but nevertheless, a bit irritating. Then there appeared to be loads of people with the exact same issue on the Forum. Apparently, it was a problem with a spring under the spool. At least 2 of mine had it, maybe all 3.
So I got in touch with Okuma and they were aware of the issue, and had a solution to resolve it (I think they heavily greased the reels to avoid the problem). I returned all 3 and they sent me 3 new ones. Not Mk 2 versions, they were visually identical to the original ones I had. I've had the replacement ones a season now, and the problem hasn't reappeared.
If you have older versions of these reels and you haven't had this problem, they'll probably be OK.
If you have a look through previous threads, you'll see lots of people with the problem.

I have 6 of them and read about the problems on here in the past (im yet to have the issue) but I was curious that if I bought another set how i would know they are the "improved" model?

I bought a set of these 2nd hand, all 3 of them had problems with the anti reverse. I was gutted and sold them to a trade in shop for what I paid. they felt nice reels but had to get rid
I have six 6000s and six 8000s had them for 5 years probably never had a problem.

As I said, if you've had them for a while and caught fish on them, and the issues isn't there, then they will be fine.
I would have thought any new sets bought nowadays will defo have the fix on them. The chances of some old stock knocking around in tackle shops with the fault is zero.

isn't the issue with the 6000's just because of one of the springs that holds the anti reverse in place being weakened?
I am sure I read on here that was the case - I had issues with one of mine playing up so took it apart & stretched the spring a little & they have been fine since.
great reels for the money - amazing clutch, weight, retrieval etc but after a few years of use, there is a fair amount of wobble on the handles & they are no longer as smooth as they were. Definitely feel cheap - so much so that I am a bit concerned that something is going to break mid-session & they are going to cost me a fish.
Anyone know if it is possible to get spare spools? I don't think I have ever seen them anywhere & was wondering if any of the Nash / Sonic reel spools will fit as they look very similar?

I find the best reel depends on the venue and tactics. If I'm on the bottom with a few rods then it's Daiwa QD's.
However, if I'm going around the lake stalking or fishing off the surface it'll be a lighter rod and to minimize weight either a Miravel or Vanford in the smallest size I can get away with. (Less than half the weight of a 25 QD and 1/3rd the weight of a 45 QD)
