I'm getting a half decent bonus in a couple of weeks and want to spunk it on some new rods.
Budget will be uto £800 for 3 rods and a spod/marker rod
Been looking at the Tackle Box CF-X Black Edition Carp Rod 12ft 3.25lb cork rods based on recommendations I read, any more I should be looking at?

Johnson Ross have a clearance sale on their Free Spirit rods at the minute. Might be worth a look. Just ask them to check them over before you buy if you can't get to the shop yourself.

Are these going to be your " Forever rods" or just a stop gap to fish a particular lake at this point in time?
I would think about saving up the difference in price to get the "Forever rods ". I suppose it depends on how often you get a decent bonus, which you don't need to spend on essentials.

Take a look at Tackle Tavern pre-loved . . . some decent sets on there with good savings.

These will hopefully be forever rods, any future bonuses (which should be ever year) will likely be spent on other things having recently split from wife and my boy.
Can't really push the budget anymore, unless the bonus comes out better than expected

I've recently got the Cfx blacks in 10ft, they're a serious bit of kit, they look great, they feel great, and perform really nicely too! If you can go to the shop then I'd recommend it, they'll tell you more about why they're as good as they are.

Keep an eye out for a second hand set, lots of people sell their gear for many reasons, some of it relatively new. Put a search in ebay and save it so anything new gets alerted to you. It may take a while, but there are real bargains to be had. Just make sure it's top quality and don't just jump on the first thing that comes up unless it's absolutely right for you.

Good advice. Good quality Harrison rods often come up for c.£600 a set and they will be better quality than any new rod purchased at that price point

You will get a top set of second hand harrisons for that . If i was,nt between houses with all my stock in storage i would dig a new set out for you , unfortunately i cant get at anything for a while !

I've save an eBay search for some CFX rods however @jeffire - I'm in no rush so can wait if a good set of suitable Harrison's would be achievable.
Just new to make sure I don't spunk the bonus on something else!!!

CFX are forever rods too.
I can't think of any reason why I would ever change mine - they do everything I want them to do & can be built to your exact spec for a few quid extra.
if you are buying something special then get them built specifically how you want them mate - you'll never regret it.

See if Bristol Angling are still selling the Terry hearns for 150 each, they had classics and distance when I bought some.
Probably struggle to find better at that price

+1 for the CFX, great rods. I've got the 12' 3.25's which are a great all rounder. I also used to have a set of the continentals which were lovely for distance fishing as they still had a reasonable playing action.

I appreciate the OP. is sorted, but I finally got to try out my MK3 Terry hearn distance rods today.
Sadly didn't get to play a fish, but using man maths (turns of handle returning the lead on my tournies) I think I was hitting around 150m with 12lb GR60 straight through. I'll probably never fish at those ranges but it was fun to really welly a 4oz lead for half an hour to warm up!
Hopefully, I'll get to play a fish on them next 😃

Hello mate, I got the 12'9 3.5tc 50mm distance ones.
Their advert says 3.25, so before I ordered I checked and they confirmed they were 3.5's because that's what I wanted. Might be worth double checking again before you hand over your hard earned.
The 50mm don't look like 50mm. They're proper eyes not like the current fad of really slim eyes raised away from the blank, if I didn't know it was a 50 to my eye I wouldn't have believed it. It just looks right on the rod.
Ive got a couple of mk2's that will become utility rods now and I had mk1's in the old days. These feel a little lighter in the hand but are more powerful so I'm guessing the action will be a bit stiffer when I play a fish.
I've dicked around with rods since I've got back into carping but for £150, I'm well chuffed with them. They're an improvement over previous editions but keep everything in line with their heritage and like the other versions look mint 👌

Is the writing on the blank a different colour between Mk1 and Mk2?
I have a set of 3 and a set of 4. Both sets being 12' 9" 3.25tc with the 40mm rings.
From memory (they were bought second-hand during my rod collecting/covid era!) I am sure I noticed they differed. It would be good to finally put that question to bed if somebody knows!

Im sure there Mk2 in the picture Karlos.
Mk1 came in 12.9ft in both 2.9oz and 3.4oz, they also didn't have classic printed on the blank

I think they're mk3's mate
From memory Mk2's actually said 'mk-2' on them and didn't say the ring size.

Yep I think you're right. The MK2 had MK2 written on them and had rounded collars. The MK1 had italic writing. The MK3 have flared collars.

I went and grabbed the rods earlier to check what colour the decals were on the set of 4.
What do I discover!? They had Mk-2 on the cloth rod bags and on the rod themselves!
So my photo in the previous post is of the set of 3.
Looking at the photo of the Mk-1's linked (which are very different looking) I guess the set of 3 with the gold writing are Mk-3
Took a pic of the Mk-2 alongside the Mk-3 just to get closure on the question

Just been looking at the rod section on that website. I'm surprised at the prices for rods from the 1990s.
They are going for much more than I expected. I thought they'd only worth about £30-£40 each.
There must be tons of these type of rods tucked away in peoples lofts and garages.

As someone already said, why do people want these rods when there is much better material being used to make modern rods. Personally I'd take the best available every time.

They're asking that price, doesn't mean they're selling at that price. Look at Ebay sales for realsim.

Some of them are sold though. Whether they actually went for the price listed is another matter.
There will be an element of sentiment and nostalgia involved. If somebody offered me the exact same blue fibre glass rod my Grandparents bought me to start out as a kid I would give £100 to keep for the memories. The true value is pennies and the rod is crap, but that's irrelevant.

Some of the prices are eye watering and lots of those rods have been listed for a very long time. I have called and emailed them a couple of times and never heard anything back. I think it's just as much of a relic as what is listed for sale there.
