My old shimano 5500 XTC (2012 model, not the ci4) have had their time, its time to replace them.
I look between 2 especially : - shimano ultegra 14000 XTE
- daiwa 23 emblem 35 swc qd
Similar in price, what do you think about those 2 ?
I take them on hand in the shop and i seem to prefer the daiwa qd drag, but i'm a shimano user since a long time and i'm afraid to change to daiwa, does it will last like a shimano ?
If some of you have them, what are the pro and cons ?

Had the emblems and the ultegras
Personally ultegras are the smoother reels no play in the handles unlike the emblems
They aren't perfect but out of the two.

Had the Daiwa, lasted 6 months and then sold them and bought the XTE and for me they feel a far better reel that I am happy using

I know not on your list but have a look at the okuma obsidian - hell of a reel for the cash

I had a look at the daiwa whisker in the shop yesterday. They are a beaut
TBH both Daiwa and Shimano sell a lot of overpriced gear. I sold a set of Ci4's as they sounded like crap after a year and upgraded to Sonik GT10000 reels and have never looked back, been using them now for 2 years.

I looked at both of these, and others.
Ended up going with the Penn Affinity LC III 7000. Nicest reels I've ever owned.

Okuma the 2 shop owner that i have talked about have said to me they dont stay well for to long, it seem they rapidly have playing after some abuse...?

Why have your existing reels had their time?
Keep on buying new reels in search of perfection never works for very long.
It ends up being a roundabout in my opinion.
If that what keeps you interested than fair enough but most of my gear is so old that people come up to me telling me how they wished they had still kept theirs when they had them
As a compromise my advice is if you can afford it, is to keep your existing reels rather than use them to finance new reels. That way it's easier to get off the roundabout.

I have them since 2012, i think 12 years of abuse is a great time, especially for a reel of that price !
One of them have the baitrunner cap that is hit and miss, and one other have the handle that playing too much and start touching the bail sometimes.....
They had their time, trust me !

like someone else has previously mentioned, Okuma Obsidian's should not be over looked at all.

I was a Daiwa man for years including top end Iso's and sold them for the Shimano XTE14000 and have not looked back, superb line lay and a fantastic clutch.
Very happy with them indeed.

I'm not sure if by 'had their time' you mean cosmetically, but if only mechanical issues they could probably be fixed on service, thought it worth a mention.

When you fish the canal and caught 12 fish a night, trust me you are happy that your reel are not the big old baitrunner that weighted a ton !
And i prefer a lighter reel for casting, you can have more speed !

Fair enough, each to their own. I'd prefer to sacrifice a little weight to ensure strength personally. Neither Shimano nor daiwa have the build quality they used to imo

I can't comment on okuna as I've not used any of their reels before, although they do make reels for plenty of companies to rebrand , and get very good reviews . The Penn reels mentioned earlier are the ones imo, really good reels that last

i have had a set of okuma inceptions for about 4 years now, still going as strong, not a single issue with them. I believe the inception was Okuma dipping a toe into the carp market to see if it was viable to them.
After the success of the inception, CB, T-Rex and the 8K, they brought out a flagship killer model, the Obsidian.
I have had my obsidians for nearly a year. Used them a lot. no issues. Will be getting a third when funds allow

I have had the original okuma interceptors since they came out must be 25 years plus still going strong got 6 okuma inception 6000 no problems 4 inception 8000 not a problem . Penn have been in the reel business forever they wont let you down . The penn affinities are superb but get the 7000 not the 8000 they are way too big. As mentioned both Daiwa and shimano build quality is not what it was .

I have seen the Penn vantage 7000, it seem to be spot on ! Its only 540gr !
And Penn have a very good reputation for the reliability of their reel !

It is for this reason that i have always liked shimano : the drag is so smooth when you play a fish, no juddering like you say, the old emblem S (gold ones) drag was awfull for that, it have cost me fish on hook pull for this reason in the past !

Throwing one out there. Using the nash gtl8000 reels. Really cannot fault them. Folding handle, wind in direct to gears, best line lay I've ever seen on all the reels I've had. Very smooth, nice line clip, silky smooth drag which isnt ultra fast, at least a turn to get it to a fighting drag, and line reducers.Very impressed. Apparently internals are solid aswell after asking a couple of guys who service reels. Also rubber line guards. Always had issues with the rotor style ones. Ah just to add they do gold spools now if that is your thing.

Now with all the advice that i have had, i'm undecided between the shimmy XTE and the penn vantage 7000
Where i can buy them, the shimano is £10 cheaper than the penn, but i can't try the penn in the shop before buying and i don't want to be disapointed by the drag when it will be in my hand !

Now other companies have branched out and are producing reels that are far better than the Shimano and daiwa reels on the same price bracket. These aren't new companies, they have been making reels for many years, Penn for instance have been much bigger in the sea fishing market, where the reels take far more abuse than in carp fishing so when you get a Shimano or daiwa reel in the same price bracket as say a penn or an okuma, you are generally getting a better quality reel from the latter.
Having has a set of the original affinity I can assure you the clutch's were lovely and smooth. I've said it many times on here. If the affinity had a Shimano or daiwa badge instead of a Penn one, they'd have been double the price
