Do any of them actually work? If so any recommendations?
Just trying to get one for a France trip later this year, if they are bad there ill be using a mozzie mesh so it's just for any in my bivvy I can't see / kill myself really.

A couple of guys I know who fish abroad a lot swear by incognito room repellers I think they are called, a little tub of stuff that you open and it keeps them away.

The mozzie coils mostly sold here are NOT ! that effective and really very toxic due to the chemicals used
however
the ones sold in France are based on Geranium oil and are completely different they are super efficient and none of the nasty head ache inducing chemicals sold in almost every super market but sometimes hard to find where in the shop they are so best bet
Take a picture of this box on your phone then dont ponce about just show it to one of the staff in the shop and they will take you too them if they have them
THESE IF YOU CAN FIND THEM HERE ARE THE ONES TO BUY IN THE UK but cheap in France I always bought a carrier bag of them everytime I went to France

I've been using the lifesystems coils bought a load when they had a sale on. Use 2 at a time either side of bivvy door working for me so far.

These are brilliant. Tabs that you put in them are expensive tho.

Been using one of these for while (over my oldskool headache inducing but effective coil burner) however I'm not sure whether they've now been discontinued . . .they certainly work well inconjucntion with a Deet based spray (for me at any rate)

Inserts can be 'refreshed' rather than replaced (at cost) with a few squirts of Lifesystems Max Deet spray . .

A shame they stopped production of them a couple years ago, can't even get refills anymore

Sure I read the thermacel ones only last a few hours?
Are they totally safe?
Just don't like the idea of gas cannister being used all night

The thermocells last around 8 hours... they use literally no gas at all. The pad does get hot but never been burnt or had any problems with it.
I bought one a few years ago and they have been the best thing I've used... literally have seen swarms of mozzies push away from the bivvy and hold at a distance away from it.
They are expensive to buy and the pads are extortionate but I have found the actual thermacell ones are the best by far. I do have some pads at moment which were a cheap buy off ebay which do the job but only last about 4-5 hours max.
For me they are worth it, i am extremely susceptible to mozzie bites... genuinely shocks people when i show them after a night on the bank how much i get bitten

I'd go a step further and suggest moving to the thermacell backpacker, it screws on to one of the 500g type cans which can be far cheaper in the long run.

In the link in post#14 they mention using 2xAli Express pads instead of 1 Thermocell pad, they also mention that the 2xAli pads last only half the the time of 1 Thermocell.
If you can put up with this then the cost difference is massive though, you can get 120 pads for £3.09+tax

i mostly use it in the day / eve and then a little at night to clear out the bivvy of them. I don't keep it on at night and use the mozzie mesh to keep them at bay once i have cleared out the bivvy of biters.
I either use a sealed inner capsule style bivvy, or a mozzie mesh over the bedchair.
I am a bit of a pussy about protecting from the biters after getting in pretty severe trouble in the middle of no where in France after getting a lot of bites one night. Fortunately a local farmer was able to be attracted and helped me out.
The upside being that when i now go back to that lake. The farmers wife sends her hubbie out with food for me every day
and i bung them some euros at the end of the week.

another vote for the thermacell backpacker. it was a gamechanger for me - I have a few old gas cans that are almost empty & use them to fuel it - I have yet to 'finish one off' as it uses a very small amount - it's like a tiny pilot light.
I use cheaper tabs from Ali express & use 4 - 2 in the slot at the top & then leave a couple on top of it. found it to be as good as the normal thermacell pads & much cheaper.
they do a new one now that uses a liquid that I have heard really good things about.

Yep I have doubled up on smaller non thermocell branded pads a stink load of times. Saved loads of cash. I find they run out quicker but it's no huge issue

Amazon. Search mosquito tablets last ones I used were ODS branded use two in the thermocell due to size. The aroxol ones are good also. Quite a few to choose from, just check the postage timings as many ship from overseas
