I had a chuckle to myself this week as someone on the lake was referring to distances in wraps, and the gradually lowering water level due to evaporation has kind of put it out of kilter.

On the swims I fish, I have a 'casting spot' for the features, all memorised, but at the high water level. This week in all innocence, someone asked how many wraps I was fishing, to which the answer would be 9, but from the top of the bank, not the 7 if I was casting from the current water level. I always cast from the top spot!

I was kind enough to mention that the spot I have baited up to was around 36metres, simply because I hate the wrap reference, it means nothing.

Put your sticks out, and wrap, yes OK, but I frequently walk my lines out, so I'm not going to get wraps, to me it is a proper distance of metres or yards if you haven't gotten metric yet.

I don't own any, though have been thinking about getting some lately, I've gone so far as to order the rings, chord and toggles...but....they'll be custom metric distance.....be interesting to see someone copy that to 'standard' wraps

I gave wraps a lot of thought and then gave up I went overkill thinking of actual distance acuracy and then realised it means nothing as long as the lead goes where I want it, roughly the same place. With 10% stretch or more in a line (using nylon) what relevance does hitting a clip have with the line under tension if you don't wrap the line under the same tension at the sticks, and how would you measure that. In theory you'd have to hit the clip and hope the line would have enough drop to return to a none stretched state/the same tension you wrapped it at....see why I gave up.

I'm happy if people are happy, do what makes you happy

I'll use distance sticks when casting towards a far margin, etc. If into open water, hardly use sticks unless looking for pinpoint accuracy - since my casting is generally poor, this is usually a waste of time.

Horses for courses really. If I need to be accurate with a cast to a margin, spot etc then it's helpful. The downside with the 'wraps' thing is that people think they have to fish to a certain spot at certain wraps/distance rather than letting the fish show them where to go.

Is it not common sense that if a spot is at 9 wraps when casting from position A for example then regardless of water level, you'll hit the spot so long as you cast from position A. That guy sounds like a numpty to me.

Depends on your definition of a spot, a spot 4m x 4m or 12" x 12"...oh god, here we go.

It depends whether you let the line fall on the clip or let it free fall as it depends on the depth of the water. If falling on the clip the line falls in a arc away from the impact point and towards you, so in deep water (not sure what constitutes deep in this instance) it could make a big difference. I'm sure this has been discussed before on here regards reducing spombing distance, in any case it'd be easy enough to work out the arc if you know the depth and the distance. Then you'd have to decide if you want your bait on the edge or in the centre of the spombed bait, and that could depend on what your dropping and how it spreads....

so you'll need to don your diving gear, get to your spot, get a mate to spomb over it, use your tape measure to measure the spread diameter, flow meter to determing undertow, gps to determine direction of flow.........and hope it's the same on the day or calculate alternatives

the fish don't care either way, there's a Andy Cap cartoon there somewhere

This is applicable in deep water and how big the spot is. If technique is a constant and the position of where the cast taken is the same, you'll hit the spot.

When spombing over deep water, even the heaviest of mixes will spread vastly so best to not worry about it and just be concerned with landing the rig where you perceive the spot to be and where it is presented well

There's a video on youtube that shows just that with varying sized boiles and I was completely stunned by the result. Boilies clumped, I kid you not, quite a few dropped in tight groups of say 5 almost as if they had some form of attraction between them, spread was minimal, spread of particles wasn't as great as you'd think. I know undertow could change that drastically depending on weight.

Spread on any sort of deep lake with undertow will spread vastly. Like you've mentioned, lots of variables all of which are out of our control so best to just accept it and not get hung up on it

Agreed

Here's one of those videos, not the deepest but I bet a lot of people would think there's more spread at 5m or 10m clicky

EDIT, yes it's a static drop but even so. EDIT 2 or 10m.

I'm not arguing distance sticks believe me, they really do have a use, whether it's a pair of storm poles, or proper distance sticks, although I can't convince myself that I need to buy specific distance sticks, using my bivvy storm poles.

It's the distance element of a 'wrap' that makes me laugh.

I've pinpointed a few feeding spots on the lake, and one I found I couldn't reach from the bank when the water is up, I need to be on the margin due to a tree and 12ft rods, or cast from the next swim either side. At the moment that spot is 40metres out, yet in a few weeks, from the margin might be 38.

My baited area I've been priming is 32m out from the casting point, which is 9wraps just for the record, yet in terms of from the waters edge is only 28m, or 8wraps.
That changes for my Spomb rod to 10wraps with braid, the swing back of a more 'lobbed' cast and watching the spread of bait.
I also consider the line arc, swan neck depth or 4feet, so I'm coming back about a foot with the cast being feathered etc.
(Sorry, there's a joke in there somewhere).

Me neither, seem to be very effective. For me it just the so called absolute precision aspect that's implied in a lot of videos. I was thinking of using my storm poles, I guess you just turn the thumb screws or lever lock inwards, though I do like those grooves to catch the line.

I've been out in the lake finding spots, and I'm not convinced that you need pinpoint accuracy with the size of some of the feeding holes that the carp have been in. A rod length across and front to back of soft silt where they have ripped the bottom up.
Accuracy to mind the weed maybe, but not to get where they feed.

You could quite easily get a take anywhere within a 3metre circle, so 32-35metres is good enough.

Like you, I do use my storm poles, with the lever lock on the inside of the turn, and one doubles up as my photo pole with camera adaptor already screwed in.

Even on Nazeing, Brackens, you'd know if you missed the gravel, a 10feet or more drop compared to a 6foot drop, and I tended to not clip up but aim to be by the marker float.

Doesn't matter what you use, wrapping up to accurately to put a rig on a spot will get you more bites.

Anyone can cast and hit a gravel bar for example if they know the approximate distance, the guy clipping up to the back or the front of the bar on the edge of softer stuff will catch either more, or the better fish in my opinion.

So whether it's a bank stick, wrapping stick, storm pole, cane, a walking crutch. Who cares, but being accurate will serve you better than is what ultimately is a educated pub chuck.

There are exceptions, choddies and solid bags cast at showing fish of course but I think accuracy is a big string to a carp anglers bow.

There is absolutely no doubt wrapping sticks and recasting accurately will lead to more bites year on year.

I'm not arguing accuracy, however you get it; marker float on a feature, creeping casts into the island or far bank margin, walking lines out or using sticks.

My argument is solely this supposed distance that is a wrap. It is a wrap that is a totally irrelevant measurement that does not exist.

The person who sets his sticks at 10feet for his 10feet rods is going to get a different number of wraps to the angler who uses 12feet rods, or the person who bought strung sticks, or the 13feet rod angler.

Recognised distances are metres, or yards, both of which are established measurements.
The yard being one left right (double) pace of a Roman March, 1000 being a mile.
The metre is a particular fraction of a line of longitude from the North Pole in a great circle, and the original metre is kept in Paris after the metric system was invented in 1791.

I don't know how many people seen the video which showed DaVe Lane cast a distance using braid and he measured it by wraps then casted the same amount of wraps with mono, the lead sailed way past the marker he put up with the braid, I must admit that when I lead around I use my spod rod loaded with braid and I then realised my fishing rod was going nowhere near the spot, yes I always pull back when the lead hits the water but if the spot is shallow you just can't pull back, now if I find the water is shallow I set my fishing rod 1 1/2 wraps shorter but I still wonder if my rig is hitting the spot

A wrap is what is relevant to the set up you use or whatever room you actually have for sticks.

Ive used sticks set around 6ft apart in a peg that was very tight, doesn't matter how far it is in literal terms.

As for the braid to mono comparison Dave Lane did, are we referring to popping up the marker float? If so then in say 16ft of water, you probably would hit the clip 5ft past the float and it would pendulum back, maybe I need to watch the clip.

But the measurement does exist Nick. Doesn't matter if you or I don't use it, it is definitely part of the modern day carp language.

Luckily where i fish at mo i can use braid on baited rods as well as marker rod. Yes there is defo line stretch with mono so the feet in between each wrap will indeed be slightly different.

When our lass phoned us to see what I wanted for my dinner from Subway, I told her to bring me a "Chicken Wrap".

When she got it home I could see the person who sold her it was a carp angler, it was nine foot long, good job he didn't use 12' rods, I would never managed to eat it all.

Out of curiosity does no one use marker elastic etc any more.

The lakes i currently fish are relativity small, so I generally use marker elastic, i do note the wraps / distance down in case i need to check.

I understand o n a big chuck, this may cause more friction and affect the casting distance, but on smaller lakes clipping up to marker elastic is my preferred choice.

4 yard cord?
Or 3.66metres?

Whoever mentioned about braid vs mono on the sticks coming out at different casting distances is interesting, although I might without even thinking cover the issue. I tend to add an extra circuit on my sticks with the braid on the spod rod, so the drift back baits up over my rods.

@Essexandy, I am now trying not to use the word...

Does it really matter how u measure or what you call it? As long as you are consistant with what you do then who cares? Unless you are sharing info with others ie spots etc..... then they need to ensure they are doing the same method of measuring or you tell them your method. If people want to refer to their measurement in wraps, lengths, metres or lamposts.... who really cares?

That's not strictly speaking legal.

The first measurement to be shown should be the metric measurement, and the imperial measurement may not stand out more than metric.

Hence why I try to stick to metres. I know metres, my step is roughly a metre, my conversion from sticks to distance I convert in my head to metres.

Is it now not legal to measure in feet and yards first??

I for one don't care i measure in wraps and yards for the simple reason it is easy and accurate the rods i use are 12ft which equates to 4 yards its very easy to be consistent and accurate using that method. The other good thing that makes it easy is half a wrap is 2 yards a quarter of a wrap is 1 yard it really does make life easy.

As a side note what do you measure your rods in ft for length and lbs test curve, going by your logic you need to complicate things and tell all the rod makers they should now use metric measurements only and not what has been an industry standard for many years

As said already it's makes no odds how far you seperate your sticks or unit of measurement used. Aslong as the person using it understands it and helps them catch more fish.

I use yards and wraps - 25 wraps is 100 yards so simple to use. There is a few on this forum who like to make things more complicated and argue

Step back, look at what is happening with a clear mind.

I had a similar experience the other day. Certain people tried their hardest to prolong that as well. This thread, about this specific topic was created for a specific reason. About a subject which he knew was going to get him the attention he wants. He's baiting you.

Since my conversation with him the other day. I've seen him write, “knowing the intelligence of people on this forum” in random posts trying to spark a reaction. It's constant, looking for attention. Just like a child. When you respond to his absolute waffle, you always get his version of validation, then you get “poor me”. It's a very well rehearsed plot. It gets played out day after day after day. He's found his niche. He is a one man horror show for MH public relations online.

I have experienced this obsessive behavior with the other Nick about my work. The other day I tried to speak to this Nick about how he acts on this forum constantly, immediately he called intimidation on me. Claims he is being intimidated. Then you get the poor me straight away afterwards. The fella is dangerous.

My advice, don't give the bloke the attention that he craves so badly. It will only end one way every single time. Just as it has here, yet again. It will happen again too. It's quite a difficult situation. Glad I am not a MOD.
