Is it ok to start using fish oils early spring? Thinking salmon and shrimp oils glazed over baits or injected in to bags. Or is it still a little early in the year?

Depends entirely on the water temperature of your lake, it's totally worth getting a little reader, I think Reuben Heaton do one you can flick out as well?

I tend to start adding in to my hemp oil gradually but it never goes above 50-50 just because I think hemp oil in fantastic in the warmer months too.

Yeh hemp oil is one of my favorties. What do you think about glugging boilies in oil generally? Do you think that you are doing yourself a disservice due to stopping the solubility of the baits? Im thinking doing half of your sessions baits in oil, and half out the bag or with a hydro gives you the best of both worlds.

I think oils have there place, but I will never soak baits purely in oil, I always add oil to my hydros for personal fishing as it brings it up in the water column.

Fats in my world are purely on a carrying function, what it carries, is once it's boy of more interest to the fish. Think of it as the bag the takeaway comes in. Oil droplets combined with hydros rise to the surface and disperse under the surface tension, releasing the heavy hydro elements to sink back down to the bottom gradually.

It's weather dependant but a massive edge when everyone is keeping heavy hydros and bottom baits stuck to the bottom.

You could do worse than go to your fishing shed / room and cut all your hydros with 15% hemp oil to be honest.

If fishing fairly shallow lakes and the fish are definately moving around on the bottom then I will omit the oil completely.

Might be worth leaving the Fish Oils until it warms up a bit.

Anyone got data on degree of rancidity vs time/storage, for various oils ? Been using MCT C8, but probably move over to salmon or hemp.

For hemp, a lot of larger firms are using a technical grade which is very rancid and not meant to go into feed I don't think.

I get spec sheets with mine so can't really help but if worried source a version bottled for humans and go by the dates on it.

With salmon oil bacarel will have best before and is usually decent product ( as most things from there ).

Which larger firms are these? They should be outed if they are putting rancid oils out there that can risk damage to the ecosystem. People need to know so they can steer clear.

Shrimp oil?
I only ever found one source for this in the States. It was expensive and wasn't much cop. As Mozzi said, for salmon, Bacarel if you want the Scandinavian stuff, or choose a top quality pet food one if you prefer Scottish Salmon oil. Very different tastes/smells.

Look at what makes oil rancid:-
Light, Oxygen, Moisture, Bacteria (although unlikely)

Keep it in a airtight container, (squeeze out any excess air if partially filled) and store in a cool dark place. Will last well beyond its BBE... remember oils are genuinely effective preservatives so naturally will last a long time in optimum conditions.

Last time I named firms you criticised me, and recently mentioned me on the A baits page which I've had 4 separate people inbox me laughing about. 4 people who adore my baits despite you claiming I don't know anything about bait. 3 of these people who switched to my baits from your friends. ( and me and him get on fine as it happens ). I'll refrain from taking up your suggestions as I find your attitude to be quite hypocritical. have a good week

I'm glad I keep your inbox busy and you amused. It's good to laugh, and if it validates your feelings of self worth, then happy days.

I don't think you've ever been criticised for naming anyone when you've given real proof (rather than “I think” or “I'm sure”), it's the wide casting of aspersions that you won't back up, or using the “it's common knowledge that......” that gets on peoples tits. If you stick your head above the parapet, don't be surprised if people take a shot at you.

However, supplying rancid oils goes a bit beyond the normal, as it has a negative effect on the ecosystem and fish so if you are sure and have evidence the finger should be pointed.....

Anywho, back on track...

When I say “it's common knowledge” I don't mean common knowledge to people outside of the industry on a forum I mean people within the industry.

You only use a couple of forms and certainly seem too busy brown nosing a couple of people to realise what goes on elsewhere 😂

I have to say, the constant downward spiral of threads into arguments, etc. is getting so dull to read... You expect a certain level of it on a forum but just lately it is constant and it is so boring to read, as well as ruins threads for people genuinely wanting to find out information

You'll forgive me for not doing something ( naming the actual companies ) thst he will then use to slag me off all over Facebook groups in his spare time. I run a bait company as my full time job, I enjoy it and am made privacy to things the likes of his ilk aren't, I can guarantee 90% of bait company owners silently agree with me lol.

I got the info on the rancid oils when I sent an enquired to a prospective new supplier, I arranged for samples and he asked which grade - human food - feed - technical . With the advice that technical shouldn't be used in the feed industry due to its rancid it's but that it was “ok for animals not in the food chain”. I told him I don't think technical would be alright in the U.K. due to the preference for nutritionally sensible baits and fresh ingredients and he immediately emailed back a list of people who regularly bought it.

Now I only have his word to go on but he has zero skin in the game with me and one of these companies actually had the nerve to claim it to be superior and of a food grade.

The irony of the matter is that when I received samples ( of the food grade ) it wasn't a very nice oil to be fair lol.

Mozzi ... how many digs can you take, mate ?
You´ve got loads of patience, i must admit Highlight of the day ... let´s gang up and wind up Mozzi Does get very irritating when the same group of lads cause upheaval, causing threads to die a sudden death. The ability to mouth the abundance of info available, digest what you deem valid, then spit out the rest, and finally, agree to disagree and move on to the next thread, seems very difficult for some

And ... back to the thread

I have some emails from a producer of salmon oil I can dig out when back at work.
Basically they don't guarantee much after it's opened and as mentioned light and oxygen are the enemies.
When you order in large you can decide if you want added anti oxidant.

Des:
Shelf life for the unrefined salmon oil was said to by the producer to be 6 months in closed container.
This could be bettered by adding antioxidants (plant based)
Using an inert gas like nitrogen on argon in the opened container will decrease exposure to oxygen and can prolong the shelf life.
I use argon for some chemicals, this I got from the Swedish chain Jula where you can buy smaller bottles and suitable ventile.

His target audience didn't even acknowledge his comment lol, because he knows that I know lol.

When you have an direct way of voicing an opinion people don't like it, and everyone asks for evidence of any claim I make instead of looking for five minutes and finding it themselves haha.

There is some terrible ***** going on in the industry and just because some of these people are held in esteem, it makes it very hard for others to call them out, they're seen as pariahs for doing so. but if those who hold you in esteem don't have the knowledge to see you for who you are, its a very disingenuous regard to be held in.

Another bait maker on here makes reference to other firms all the time its just via messages, or indirect, and yet he'll jump on the band wagon when people start on me lol.

In a more positive outlook its seeing things getting spoken about, and concerns raised in public that gets other companies attention. when did you last see a fair and impartial review in ANY fishing magazine ? its only a few people on youtube who review stuff honestly. and if "mega carp monthly" says so and so's wares are top notch then the uninformed consume it en masse and BOOM. a reputation is born. then that reputation is referenced as some form of proxy reasoning as to why they wouldn't churn out complete pony products.

Viking :
Top tip mate, will definately look into it next time i visit Jula about a mile away from me

That´s why i tend to buy smaller bottles that get used up quickly, because of this rancidity phobia i have

Personally, I think you're isolating yourself and using the publicity garnered to further your own career under the guise of a medical/mental condition which claims real sufferers.
Mosquito is an apt metaphor.

reply now, with how having an autistic spectrum disorder possibly further my career, when I dont even mention my company name? and how am I not a "real sufferer" exactly? who're you to judge how each persons autism effects them?!

You yourself mentioned the rationale behind your company name previously but I'll not waste my life searching for the post.
The victims card gets overplayed these days, it's becoming old hat.
You do,however, spend a lot of time insinuating other bait Co's use inferior goods yet without naming them, but claim 'insider' knowledge.
For the record, implicated arsebook chats mean zero to me.

On the misleading bait thread ( of a company selling maize steep liquor as fish extract I think ) and a mate joked about my companies name sounding like something different, it was just a little nod as to why its called what it is.

And I didn't name the company.

Also, I'd certainly look at yourself before criticising my posts, you just make random offensive statements periodically and bring zero useful information to the forum.

In a separate issue I take with your response, people with high functioning autism can take a long time to come to terms with having a condition that others can't see / take into account. its not playing the victim to acknowledge where you might need support. its actually a really REALLY personal thing. I'm not a victim I'm just someone who's learn to live with and accept what can be a significantly difficult diagnosis to deal with. I don't want your sympathy, I pity you too much.

I genuinely hope you don't have contact with vulnerable people, your attitude is repugnant and would be extremely distressing to them.

Now that I only make carp bait for myself I get 0.5 or 1 litre bottles from the pet shop.
Overpriced, but with a sell by date and the shop owner is a carp angler and we got a "bait for ingredients program" going on.

Mozzi, just ignore the clown. Probably another profile from someone already known.

I always thought it was about 6 months, the same as pellets generally baring in mind how it's kept, definitely not worth buying large quantities unless making loads of bait.
