Hi,Not sure if anyone can help with this even if it's true?
Been told about the capture of some large record breaking carp from a secret lake back in the 80s or 90s that stirred things up a bit.
From what I have been told this was a well known angler but the photos were said to have been "doctored" and could have been taken in Canada
.Like I said it's a while back and could just be a tall tale. Thanks.

I put a post up regarding if uncaught carp are still swimming around and if I remember it was the Martin gay and the big commons that made me post it

One know it all from the carp society discredited the captures because Martin refused to name the location but when the likes of Chris yates and nevile fickling believe Martin along with many other I'm inclined to believe him as well and admire him for sticking to his principles and not naming the venue to see it battered by all.

Ah the hanningfield commons..
I'd love to have believed it and I think I did at the time, but the coincidences around his Canadian trip, plus various discussions with many people over the years I'm more inclined to think that they were infact fish from his Canadian trip

When I did my second degree, Martin was the lab tech in my department. Late eighties /early nineties.
He liked his holidays.

This article does make a strong case that these were UK fish.
I suppose we will never definitively know ( though with the huge increase in numbers of eyes looking for uncaught carp over the last 30 years).. you would have thought that someone else would have come across those big commons.....
Wish someone would post an original photo now, of course.

Abberton went no fishing for a number of years, and Hanningfield was fly fishing only.
Abberton definitely had record size bream.
It is only recently that angling has been allowed for a few angler's on Abberton.

I once fished Hanningfield off a boat for perch .
Information I received told me that the lake will one day do a record perch .
They were seen and some actually removed from the trout pens several times.
This is going back 10 years now .. huge water so could be anything present .

There was a right palava at the time. All sorts of letters were flying about Carpworld. Very respected carp anglers of the time called him out on it. Very sad episode for Martin Gay who totally lost his reputation.

There was a record equaling perch caught from Hanningfield a few years back.
On the Martin Gay commons; I'm sure I read that someone who was an expert in Canadian flora had been shown the photos, and they said that there were plants in the pictures that are indigenous to Canada and not found in the UK.

The whole MG episode was sad, ended his reputation and many of his friendships.
I too wanted to believe those fish were from the UK.
But those fish 100% came out of canada/St Lawrence, no doubt. I have caught enough myself.
His canadian holiday dates visiting family + friends were remarkably spot on, around about that time
A huge untapped trout reservoir could produce a UK surprise, like Sonning Eye did.
You have to question, that with google earth, and many, many more anglers on the bank, don't you think that someone would have found 'said UK venue' by now ?
Look at Jason Haywards amazing 1st capture of the meres Black mirror, cobra cup winner.
How long did that take to leak out and become common knowledge, a few years.

I knew a friend of his and he saw the original photo's, complete with a mountain in the background. There was some confusion about it being a Mountie but that was a rumor that ran. I know his friend begged him to put the record straight as he knew the facts but Martin wouldn't and they parted.

In that article linked in post #10 the guy says he and a dozen others saw the originals and there was no mountain in the background, just a fence and scrubland. Chris Yates saw them and believed it to be an English lake.
Some other really interesting points like MG's prized cane rods were in some of the photos, of course it's not proof but would you really take your best gear on a plane to Canada?
Some people somewhere along the way are telling porkies, that's for certain. It's the first time I've ever heard of this strangely, it's one of those things you would like to believe but who knows, there have been plenty of cons in fishing before.
