Just wondering will 12ft rods become a thing of the past so many people say they have got 10 or 9ft rods and never use there 12fts some say they have sold them and just use there smaller rods for everything some say they would only use 12fts I personally would be ok fishing a small water but fishing a big pit I think I would feel under gunned

I see a gentle giant fishing the other day ,huge bloke ,using 9ft extractor rods, when he picked one up it reminded me of a gnome,fishing ..
(Of course I went up to this big guy,saying you look really stupid holding those rods, yeah it went well,lol)

When i first started out 10ft rods were the norm for carp fishing , its just driven by tackle companies . Dont let them tell you what to buy and use ,use what you feel comfortable with.They all do the job.

A long time ago, the carp rods were not 12 feet as standard, but like many things in life, carp rods are also subject to fashion whims.
Longer rods have the advantage of casting further, but also have disadvantages, to name a few, they are more difficult when netting the fish and you can put less force on the fish.
Use 12 & 13 feet rods when necessary to cast distance, when bait boats are not allowed.
In all other circumstances always 11-10 or 9 feet rods, where the rod length depends on the location & conditions, and I am 6,2 tall.

I know what tackle companies are up to I am always criticising them I've been carping around 40 years it was split cane then lol it was just a general question to see the way people think the 12ft rods are going

45 years for me starting with fibreglass though not **** cane . 80% of rods i build are still 12 ft and stupid test curves.👍

Other rod buiders may differ ? And they definitely build more than me .Yes way to high t.c for what is actually needed in my opinion. For example I have built 2.25tc 12ft rods which the owner can hit 175 yds all day long with.

I use 12ft 2.5tc...I never ever feel under gunned or anything like that..in fact my first dedicated proper carp rods were 1.75tc..
Recently I have had made ,a custom 9ft Northwestern ledger swingtip rod,with a tc of no more than 1.1/4 tc..
Since Xmas, fishing a variety of different waters,and sat next to other carpers I have totally outfished them,I think I'm on 60 plus carp now,including many doubles..thats not being cocky,that's not my way just remarking on how overgunned most anglers are I'm sat there actually fishing ,and still some won't try a different approach, I do a lot of the sat behind three black plastic boxes as well..
All I can say is I asked on the phone to a potential fishery ,day out some general question,I was asked what the tc of my rod is,anyway no rods over 2.5tc allowed on this place..
So yeah...all these over top 3 3/4 TCS, are getting noticed maybe,who knows...

My first carp rod was 11 foot a northwestern sealy rod at 2.25 TC I replaced the ringing that had 9 rings down to 6 and it felt better for it. Lovely rod, rose tinted glasses possibly. My second carp rod was 12' back in the 80s, during the 90s I purchased two sets of rods 3 x 12” 2 3/4s and a set of 13' balisters 3.5 TC I replaced my first set with a set of 12' 3.25 Torrix several years back I had again considers 12, 12.6 or 13ft to the point of having a set of reel seats just in case. My third set of rods are also 12' it was popular then as it has been for decades. I have no interest in getting a smaller set of rods unless my car prohibits it. My current car wouldn't easily accommodate a set of 13' so it's a factor.

I still use my Shimano 1.75lb rods from the 80s which are 11ft'ers but i use my ESP 2.75lb Tectrix in 12ft by far the most and never felt under gunned. I also have a set of the same rods in 3.25lb which ive never used

I do think there is a place for shorter rods though, I have some 10ft'ers in 2.5lb which is a nice all rounder and im about to buy a pair of 8ft rods to use from a boat. I briefly owned a set of Sonik Xtractors but for me the whole extending rod thing is a bit of a fad.

Now there's a rod the ng I had. The amorphous 2.75 they where the bee's knee's the tc have just gone up and up over the years

I almost exclusively use 9ft 3lb TC rods these days. I can cast over 100yards with them without any issue, and the convenience of the shorter pack down length is brilliant for mobility and storage. The 12fts rarely get used, tho there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. Just like the ability to store the 9fts made up in a cupboard, and transport easily in the boot of a car or public transport.
At the end of the day the fish don't care. As a kid I used to fish for float fish for carp with a match rod, match reel and 6lb mainline regularly catching fish to 20lb with no issue, or used an old 7ft fibre glass sea spinning rod for stalking. Heck I once caught a trout hand lining blue nylon string to a bent nail with some bread flake on it. All that really matters is getting your bait presented in front of a fish.

My carp rods have always been 12ft, with the exception of my stalking rod.
I have used or tested shorter rods occasionally, and for me, the reduction in casting distance. If I was on small intimate waters it may not matter, but I do fish large waters where I do need to cast big distances at times.
I love my Century NG's and my Rod Hutchinson The Ones they both cast well over 100metres and playing fish is a pleasure.

Very much doubt 12ft rods will become a thing of the past.
Majority of small rod use is trend driven.
It really comes down to the way you like to fish and the circumstances you face.

Why would I bring a 12ft rod when I can hit 100 yards with my 10ft which is also great for playing with fish?

For me the benefit of a 9ft rod is nothing really to do with the fishing aspects. I live in a London flat, and the only way of storing my 12ft rods is under a bed, without reels on. I can store my scopes made up ready to go in a cupboard, and they're dead easy to carry on a bus/tube (12fts are a right pain). Got the 12fts when I had a garden flat and a shed to store them in, now I don't they're just impractical for all the times they're not being used for fishing. In truth though now I've got the 9fts, I can't say I've really noticed any way that they're inferior in terms of casting or fish playing. Maybe I've had to improve me technique a bit to still get the distance with a 9ft, but I'm still getting my bait where I want it.

I fish mainly with my 10' ones because I'm on a canal or a small water but I've now realised by end of year when I come off the canals to fish the lakes in the colder months I will need 12 footers,so I'm saving up to get me a matching set of Harrison rods so I can hit that far bank as it seems the fish are over that way in the colder weather.

I remember fishing with some lovely 10ft rods on a small lake many years ago and they were great. But then I moved onto a big pit and I was completely under-gunned. I just couldn't reach where the fish were and I cannot see that anything has changed since those days. Big rods cast further - it is simple physics. Since then I have always fished with 12ft but this year I've had some 12ft 6 Aviators made for me. I wanted a bit more stiffness for casting without losing the playability and apparently lengthening the rod can achieve this. 13ft just seemed too long so the 12ft 6 were a good compromise. First trip in 2 weeks so I will see how they get on.

Back in the day people didn't have multiple set ups, whereas nowadays you'll find a lot of carpers have a general use set up, and a their distance set up.
There's is bit of snobbery amongst carpers (shock horror!) that anything less than 12ft is a toy or a fashion accessory. In truth, if these shorter rods didn't make sense then surely they wouldn't be so successful. Nashy originally come up with the scopes as a solution to a problem, he didn't pluck the concept out of thin air just to start a trend. That would have been too big a gamble. When people started using scopes and other short blanks they realised (as I did) that we had been stuck in a rut with 12/13 foot rods for the past 20 years. Things move on, new ideas and solutions evolve.
I've still got my 12's for bigger waters and France trips, but for most of my fishing, my short rods are perfectly adequate and much more practical. Not because of fashion or fad.
PS, it does make me laugh on here that most threads end up with blokes swinging their dicks about what they used to use in the good old days, and how they've been at it since Adam was a lad 🤣

At the minute some free spirit 10ft 3.25tc ctx rods I got them to see how I got on with them and actually really like them, my plan was to upgrade them if I liked them but I cant see the need now these are brilliant rods and have no need to upgrade anymore.
My 9fts are mash dwarfs and my 12fts are free spirit s lites

I'm surprised you haven't gone down the shorter rod route Ads - with your ultra light approach. I have 3 sets of 12 fts in the attic not touched them - 9ft 2.75 and 10 ft 3lb used all the time, great fun on smaller rods with a sensible tc - no regret what so ever 👍👌.

Treated myself to 10ft 3lb Nash scopes 2 seasons ago and can honestly say I can't see me using my 12ft rods again.
So for me just find what's comfortable for you and stick with it, regardless of what anyone else uses.

Yeah to be honest a fair few people I know have said similar if I did go that way and believe me I have seriously thought about this ,I'd deffo get some Ctx in 2.75tc ,they are lovely rods..
If I can't afford to run me 4x4 ,it'll happen sooner, rather than later,....fiat panda time ..lol..
Like you rightly say,back in the mists of time 10fters was where it was at on the banks of Bernithan ,Wheal St Anne,Woldale etc ,no doubt about it...
I guess what it is for me is I don't cast far,but I do pass my rods around trees,weedbeeds at angles from the bank etc..and I donk the depths manually...so ..yeah ,you never know I might join the 10ft club one day,but I'm going to be different if I did ,a lovely set of carbon washer converted ,Mitchell 410a would be sat on them..

Can't see 12 foot rods going the way of the Dinosaur to be honest, plenty of scenarios where you need to belt a lead out and you'd be hard pressed to achieve the same with anything less.

I would say the rise in short rod popularity goes hand in hand with the rise in bait boat owners and over stocked puddles.
