Guys, what winter coats/ suits do you use?
Im not fussed whether it is a fishing brand or not really. A non-camo option (black or olive) would be great. Also must be shower proof
If you can get similar salopettes or trousers, that is a bonus but not essential
Nothing by fox, ridgemonkey or nash either please

Last year I bought a Navitas jacket and trousers and they have been great. Very warm and waterproof with a bonus of not being too bulky. Further bonus of being much cheaper than a lot of the other options within the fishing industry. Most of my other clothing has been bought from Military 1st and tend to get very good quality gear at a reasonable price (got a few Jack Pyke bits from there, not cheap but very good quality)

Do multiple thin layers then you can adapt to the change in body temperature throughout your session.
Only other bits of advice would be make sure the hardshell is goretex and try not to wear cotton.

Layers are not the one for proper winter carp fishing imo. Eventually it's so cold the heat goes and you're screwed. You need a proper thermal jobby to harness the body heat. That's my experience anyway

Fair enough.
I run hot (except for my feet) so always adding a layer then taking it back off again so layers from decent mountain brands has worked wonders for me.
Also means if I'm traveling light or camped out I don't need two sets of winter clothing just one or two less layers

Montane smock is good as it doesn't have the front zip which is a potential cold spot. Had one for years now, still effective.

That's the trouble with snugpak sj6 or 9 it's either on or off layers are better but designed for people moving walking around the problem with fishing sitting around not creating heat craghopper lined cargo trousers are good I think esp out of fishing brands are good still have waterproof fleece over 20 years old

Snugpak all the way, tried and tested by the forces for years. Got an old sleeka, a sasquatch and just got a torrent extreme, all bases covered and paired with the salopettes I'm sorted.

Best thing I ever did for winter warmth was listen to an ex-army mate who told me not to wear my cold weather gear until I was set up.....the worst thing you can do is sweat and sit in those damp clothes.
So what I got into a habit of doing was just wearing a long sleeve t-shirt, waterproof jacket, joggers, (waterproof trousers if it was raining) thin socks and waterproof walking shoes. Then when you have humped your gear out of the car, barrowed to your swim and set up take everything off, towel down and then put on your warm weather gear, thick socks, boots etc.....and it works a treat in fact I found myself not wearing as many layers and keeping warmer than I normally would. T-shirt, hoodie and an SJ9, (as Yonny said, game-changer) with a good hat and I was toasty.

Ive been for a punt around today, tried a few things on and im thinking of a black snugpak torrent and their salopettes (camo only)
Good advice about only putting your warm gear on once your set up though, it does make a massive difference!

if you want to avoid the carp tax Decathlon have some great options.
Put 'hunting' into the search bar at the top of their website.
Bought a pair of the 500 warm waterproof trousers last year - properly good gear.

All ive ever worn in all the time i been fishing even in deep winter pike fishing is a ice breaker or wool power merino top a snugpak softie pull on shirt and a army gortex shell if its raining and ive never been cold once. You dont need anything else.

It's not advice. It's just my experience. Micro fleece and snugpak and I'm toasty. I used to layer up back in the day and ended up freezing. Didn't matter how many layers. Just couldn't hold the heat in.

Not it's not. For sitting static layers aren't the one, big thick coats etc are far better. When mobile, yes layers are the way forward.

I also agree that one really warm jacket is better than loads of thin layers. The only reason for layering up is if your on the move then you can remove or add layers if you get cold or to hot. Fishing is a static sport so totally different to walking or climbing as the thinner layers then help to wick moisture away as you sweat when your walking or climbing. Fishing is totally different. At the end of the day everyone is different. Some feel the cold some dont so what works for one person might not be good for the next.

I've stood on a deck for hours in the North Sea, mid January with a T-shirt underneath a higher end north face coat. Warm as toast, as you would be with the right spec materials etc from most brands.
It's like carrying another person around though and is so hot you need it open fronted in -5 and you're still ending up cold because you're dripping with sweat to the point you take it off and the process repeats itself.
I like a warm coat but it's just too much, 5 layers still feels lighter

Depending what you're doing dictates the thickness of the different layers you use depending on the activity.

Wearing lots of layers under a thermal coat stops it from working so well. The way they work is they harness and store the body heat. Layers prevent them from doing that so effectively. With thermal gear less is often more.

That's good because that's literally the definition of a plural. My 2 year old son has a book that mentioned that many means more than one too funnily enough. He's too old for that one now though.

Is there actually such a thing as a winter insulated jacket that is really 100% waterproof ? If you go into any outdoor/camping shop . You either had thick padded insulated coats or Thinner top layer water and wind proof jackets on offer.

Snugpak Torrent is full waterproof I think mate.
I prefer a separate waterproof over-jacket so I dont have to sit in a wet jacket in the brolly.

You probably can. I'm sure RAB do a Goretex goose down jacket. Have a look about the other companies of the same ilk.
In all likelihood, a good Goretex jacket over an SJ9 would do the job.

Last night I was sitting in the bivvy and the temp dropped I had been wearing a t shirt all day but started to feel cold when inactive and sitting watching the water. I put on an esp hoodie and still felt cold put a snugpak sleeka on top and felt like I was in a sleeping bag. I was in a bivvy so did not need a windproof jacket on top but I had one with me just in case. In short it depends what your doing and where you are.

There's not a single solution for this its more of a few different bits of kit
My stuffs all schoffel, sealand, ridgeline, barbour and mountain equip all for game shooting, all proven tough durable gear, sized properly for its use
Not sure on some of this carp branded gear at all.

I like to use a bit of everything, be it from the likes of RAB (those sorts of companies), army kit and shooting/hunting gear. Most of the time I swerve the fishing tackle companies other than maybe a pair of joggers or hoodies. Something I did pick up that I really like is the Fortis Sherpa fleece, really impressed with it.
On the jacket front, I do think the Sugpack SJ9 takes a lot to top, it really is an excellent jacket for the money.

I like to use something like the SJ9 or similar under a waterproof jacket just so I can sit about under a biv without it having beads of water dripping from it. The other thing is that it's what I've done for years and years that way, sort of habitual, always willing to try something different out like.

My Mrs bought a Torrent (just for general winter use, she doesn't fish). She got the hump because I wouldn't let her get it in carpy green. She saw a lovely shade of olive, all I could see was a stinking carp angler. We settled on black
Excellent jacket. All of the Snugpak tops are good imo.

The water literally beads off it and a quick shake and it's dry,I don't wear it much in the bivvy as its too warm.I normally just chuck a fleece on and wear the torrent outside

I'm not sure if I'm honest,it is very breathable for a fully waterproof coat and has zips under the arms incase you do get too hot whilst walking

I have found the sizing ok on the standard snugpak to be honest.My wife ordered mine,it was from outdoorgb but unfortunately they don't have a store just a warehouse

The sizing on snugpak is a joke, my sasquatch is a m and huge on me, I'm either l or XL usually. As great as it is, I wouldn't dream of mail ordering anything snugpak

Some shocking bad advice on here sometimes that gets peddled year after year when in reality it is very simple
Layering works if active.
Insulation works when static.
What is warm for someone may not be for someone else
And as already said never wear the heavy insulation when active (ie getting to swim etc)

I have a couple of Pentagon jackets for winter, not too expensive and really good and I mean really good! Very warm, great fit, functional and completely waterproof. Way better than most fishing branded jackets and those ill fitting snugpak things that everyone seems to think are so great. Military 1st sell the entire Pentagon range. Take a look at their website.
