In all my time I've never been bitten by a tick,until yesterday..
I do all the usual,tuck my trousers in my socks,wear long-sleeved in damp woodland,etc..
Anyway ,I have a tick o Tom,I got the big fat ,blood bloated bugger out,left a hole on my shin bone,I got the legs out which was my main concern..
Be aware,areas of high deer concentration, is of note..gen up on lymes disease,and get a tick remover..!!
If it itches,...look where the itch is,don't ignore it,...

I've been 'had' many years ago, quite surprised not more tbh. The father in law got one on his stomach, we surmise from the Fox that slept in his chair every time he wasn't in it, could be unfair label on the Fox though. Edit, the fil did just rip it off, it took months to heal and was badly bruised.
Make sure you get the mouth parts out, don't squeeze them off as it's said they can regurgitate directly back into your flesh. It is frowned on to use a lighter or smoother in something until they die for reason above and the mouth may still stay in the wound.

I know someone who got very ill with Lyme disease last year after getting a tick around 20 or 30 years ago
His doctor said to him it can lie dormant for years

Best way to remove them is a tick removal tool. Like a mini plastic wrecking bar. Only a few £ from Amazon.
My dogs had a few ticks which I have removed with these after being advised by the vet to get one.

Try getting a ruddy test for it, 3 times my doctors refused and he said if I did go private the test isn't that accurate anyway as it's a bugger to test for.

Having read vossys post ,made me think imagine getting one on yr Japanese eye,or just as bad on the rear exhaust canal..!!

I got my lovely wife,to cauterise a sewing pin and got her to have a good old dig around where I was bitten,couldn't find anything ,and I made sure it proper bled out ,it healing nicely ..but makes you think ...

Managed to get one on my scrotum a couple of years back! Brought it back with me from a trip to a public lake in France - I have no idea how the bugger got there 🙈😂. Managed to get it out with a tick tool thingy but I was sweating a bit...

A well know carp angler who is a great friend of mine has had his health permanently damaged his lungs are shot now registered disabled in pain and incurable with Lyme`s disease

Yes years ago I fished a lake in France in the middle of a 400 acre woods it was an animal sanctuary and full of animals loads of deer in the 9 days I had 11 ticks mostly removed by the Gamekeeper that' checked me every couple of days
Apparently this year due to the mild wet winter here in the UK the ticks are everywhere

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. Having had a friend suffer with Lyme Disease and it's complications some years ago I am always aware of the things. I do not want to go through what he did.

I used to fish a deer Park after the close season was the worse time, I assume after the deer had been in the swims.
My wife removed around 12 from me after a 24 hour session on one occasion, however some guys said they'd never had one !
Maybe like mozzies they just like some people and not others.

I asked my vet if ticks give dogs Lymes, he said yes. Horrible creatures 😬

Just an heads up by if anyone takes there dog fishing or who has a dog then i strongly recommend protecting your dog from lungworm which gets into their system from slugs and snails. Deadly, deadly damage that it causes and has been known to kill a dog in minutes.

I use to never watch out for them was thinking there is a low chance of it actually biting me even lesser of a change of it having lymes disease. Well 2 years ago when i came back home i noticed 1 while i was showering right at the ankle part. luckily he just bit me and took him out with ease. Took him for analysis it came back positive for borrelia, they gave me antibiotics and i was all good, not sure if it transferred it to me or not but after that scare. I check myself after every venture in nature i wear long pant and socks nowadays i was lucky that is no joke.

Lyme disease is serious, and finally there has been some progress on the treatment as they do not have to wait for a positive test which has poor accuracy.
I would recommend anyone who has been bitten by a tick to remove it correctly and get a precautionary dose of meds.
A lot of Doctors still don't acknowledge it here, and say it has to be attached for so long, they don't have ticks there, and you have to have a bullseye rash - its all nonsense and so many are left fighting for a test and the appropriate medication. Thankfully I finally received decent treatment from a doctor
Oh - and they can be tiny too - the size of a poppy seed. Be vigilant!

Luckily the inflammation improved, but I felt a bit iffy for a week or two afterwards.

Glad they're some decent Doctors about. A lot get refused treatment for 6 weeks. Its too late then!
Id rather take a precautionary dose than risk without. Saying that - plenty of data to support/suggest the amount prescribed and length of time isn't sufficient.

At first she wasn't sure. But when I showed her the bullseye shaped inflammation went around the back of my hand as well as my wrist, she realised what it was. She went wide eyed, and said “one moment” and shot off to get the antibiotics. I can't remember what they were called now though.
From what I was told, if they didn't work, I'd have had to be kept in hospital and be administered antibiotics intravenously. But, that's still a case of for hope for the best.
The moral of story is...use a groundsheet, especially anywhere across southern and central England

To be honest dont think a groundsheet has much to do with it at all
the most I have had on me on a French trip was 11 ticks removed and I had a groundsheet all the time Ticks are on bushes trees and of course grass

ive had a few latch on to me over the years (i live and fish in the new forest - rife with ticks)
Tick-o-tom - great bit of kit...
last one i had latched on under my nuts - had to get the wife to get it off - the Dick-O-tick....
Lymes desease is a concern - but so is an infection if you dont get the whole tick out...

My dog is a real tick magnet. He takes the tablets monthly, and they seem to stop them latching on. Doesnt stop him pickingthem up though, usually find them crawling on him or o. The carpet

Interestingly ive (touch wood) never had a tick bite me, but have found a few on me. I only remeber once ever being bitten by a mosquito as well, i wonder if thats related. Do i have unpleasant blood?

That's fair. I was just unlucky in that the tick that bit me was infected with Lyme disease. Most ticks aren't infectious and just leave you with a bite similar to a mosquito bite...and that's what a lot of people think they are, especially on the legs, but the bites are more than likely from ticks.
But, as I was set up over longish grass, I made it a lot easier for the cheeky sod to crawl up off the grass and bite my wrist.
I know groundsheets can be a bit of a pain with cleaning them and the extra weight, but using a groundsheet, even better as part of a capsule definitely does save you a trip to the hospital.
Being bitten, or stung is part and parcel of what we all do. It was only yesterday I was bitten by a horsefly 😂

Apparently you can get them out using nail varnish remover (acetone) - soak a cotton wool bud in it and cover the tick they will just fall out.

I bought a few tick removers keep one set in my cars glove box and one in my fishing bag especially as Ian one of my friends has permanent health issues and is now disabled due to Lyme disease from Tick bites
