Hi guys.

As you may be aware I have recently joined the Facebook revolution.

I'm embarrassed to say that after many years of carp angling a gapping hole in my knowledge has become apparent.

I have for many years thought that carp were either commons, mirrors, ghosties, leathers or a mix of these.

I'm now aware that there is also strain called a “banger” with what appears to be a sub division called a “scaley banger”

So I wonder if you can clear this up for me. Can a fish be scaley but not a banger? How many scales does a fish need before it transitions from an ordinary banger to a scaley banger? Is there a size limitation to bangers? Some I've seen seem little more than a c4 stocky.

For a newbie like me this is all very confusing. I had a huge row with my wife last night. I got in from work and she said we had bangers and mash for tea. Disgusting. Catch and release I told her. Ffs.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

I was gonna go tonight but I've knocked it on the head until I can get this sorted out. I'm really worried that if I catch one and ask somebody to do the pics for me. What if I refer to it as a mirror, when it's actually a banger? Or worse still I call it a banger when it should be a scaley banger. I'm not sure I can live with that kind of shame.

Safest bet is not to go I think.

I think banger may be the modern version of kipper, apparently unit can also be used.

If anyone used any of these terms to my face I think I would need to walk away quickly whilst putting a face mask on to cover my laughter.

Oh god this is getting even more confusing. Are you saying that I could actually also catch a scaley unit? How on earth do I tell the difference? Can you have a banging unit?

Believe it or not a few years ago there was a type of carp that was referred to as 'a cheese'??!
But I never saw anybody define what sort of cheese it was, and a quick Google search says there are some 1800 types of cheese in the world!

I'm quite old fashioned, it's either a nice carp or it's not where I come from, so its all very, very confusing for me too.

You should be ok so long as you avoid the 'absolute banger' which is invariably a very **** attempt at music played loudly from the 'in car entertainment system' of an audi a3 ....

Don't forget the pukka rucker, black as your hat, historic old warrior and the very rare transforming carp, the chunk that changes to lump in the net, a whacker on the mat and then the famous scaley banger in the video. I've got a lot to learn if I hope to catch some of these special new species

I suggest you stay away from any page with 'Sophie' in the name as it seems every fish she catches is either an "absolute banger" or a "scaley banger". It'll have you grinding your teeth.

I believe the term refers to undernourished, twice dropped, spent 3 years of its life in a keepnet and lives it's life fighting ducks for bread in a urban ****hole park pond carp.... Scaley banger gives the poor creature a certain je ne sais quoi to the Instagram/Terry Hearn wannabes/stickered up bucket generation!! ****tards

Ha...know one has mentioned a cricket bat pasty common..

Now this is interesting..

Pasty =..non Ginster, which are *****,and should include, Philps,Cornishmaids and Aunt Avice,or my mother in law,for these be real pasties, made by genuine Cornish people.

Cricket bat,invariably a malnourished common,possibly quite old..

Just saying..!!

I've always disliked the over verbalized carp associated dialect and grammar that saturates this branch of angling. Terry Hearn spawned a army of sad sack mutanoid cretins who spoke like him complete with mannerisms even dressing like him in a effort to be as "carpy" as possible, the walk, talk and act generation. Coining new words and carp slang a product still evolving as a result today. I also can't stand the naming of every Tom, dick and Harry carp caught making some waters stock sound like a roll call, such waters that have more stock named than trees around the margins get given a wide berth unfortunately leaving a precious few unmolested waters surviving. I'm ranting now I know... kettle on!

Pasties are so ignored these days they will become fashion in 5 years time, a bit like the Solar Union Jack bobbins.

I am a member of a newish syndicate which when started had a few decent fish and a few stockies, and a few members agreed that once a fish got over 25lbs the first capture of the fish got to name them... i caught one of these new fish once it got over the specified weight and named it “mirror carp” ....this did piss off a few members and they wanted to rename the fish when it was caught again..... but as i caught it first they cannot re-name the fish and this put a stop to any more fish getting a stupid name

It goes deeper not only do they have names some are referred to as their place of potential origin, like the Italian Mirror.

Like it fella good move. Giving names to every carp in the water spoils future new anglers experience of a new adventure with all the mystery and ambience that it holds, a small amount of basic knowledge of stock is useful however a complete inventory and collerating statistics about each named fish with more facts figures and probabilitys than sky premiership cup final game analysis just rips the soul out everything.
