You could compromise.

I agree with Danny, no such rod exists. You have to sacrifice one or the other. All the people that say there 3.75 tc rods are nice to play fish on have never used a true through actioned rod. I remember watcing fairbrass playing a fish on his 3.75lb infinitys and saying how nice they were to play fish on and only the last 12” of the tip was slightly bent and that was a 50lb carp.

Not through action obviously but the 13ft ballista is the best you will get,in my opinion, you can fish it 20yards with no hook pull or mouth damage it has a nice action and it will whack a bait out a long way.

I'll have a look mate. under normal circumstances I'd of looked in person. The problem I've had is I've used 2 builders that were recommended on here over time and tbh they weren't good and that's putting it politely.

I bought some Free Spirit 13 ft 3.5 lbs tc Hi S'ive's to fish a big deep pit. The margins were at least 10 ft deep and the first few fish I caught on them were able to try to get down to the bottom but you could see them as the water was pretty clear too. I was surprised to see the rod take on a pretty decent curve as playing close in was one of the things I was worried about when I bought them.

You can always slacken off the clutch when the fish get close in too.

Enjoyed the video, and bookmarked, thnx.
That Rod looks like a typical fast taper, casting rod. (To me )
It's hardly getting much pressure, but you can see the blank is reluctant to bend much beyond the last 3-4 feet of the tip side.
On the Shimano line, TX2 might be a better bet going by the Terry Edmonds videos.

What happened and why would you need to use the manufacturer for customer service instead of the dealer/seller?

I've been using the 13ft tx2 intensity's for a while now and highly recommend them for both casting ability and playing action. I can do 35 wraps np using .33 korda tappered line. Had fish to 55 lb using this line and the relatively soft action means that dropping fish close in simply does not happen but then again it depends on how you play a fish.
You don't get crack offs either which is common on high powered rods on the cast.

For a mere £80 ea they are outrageously good.

Some of the recommendations for rods here are 3, 4 or 5 times the cost of the TX2.....

Are they worth the extra? Only you can decide..

I have some 13ft 3 1/2 lbs fs his rods that I bought over ten years ago for zig fishing.

They are not stiff but I can cast them 140yards if nead be and happy fishing them in the edge.
I love them trouble is I cannot use them alot of the time due to they are 13ft.

This us where 13ft rods can be a luxury/hindrance.

I prefer them to my 12ft Akn12 diawa amorphous rods

“No such rod exists” complete nonsense, these guys clearly haven't used an Aviator in 13ft.

Aviator rods are comfortable casting 120-130 for a decent average caster... playing action is superb, I found them a bit too soft if anything...

Used mine for 4 years - very similar to the 12.6 Torrix Te in casting and playing action... i used TE,s for 8 years, caught in the margins to 120 yds. Great allrounder.
.
I have sold my aviators now as i wanted that bit more backbone for a bit longer casting as my Syndi is mostly long range and has a .37mm straight through rule. and so i bought FS hisives in 13ft.m y fave rod of the 3 mentioned.far crisp casters, i can go further than with my aviators but they Still retain a nice playing action.

A rod is a casting rod, or a playing rod. Anything in between is just a compromise. Theres no such thing as an all rounder either, Jack of all trades, master of none.

You are right Ian, if that is what the designer/manufacturer was aiming for (casting or playing). The middle ground is a balancing act. However after umpteen sets of rods - the 13' Aviators are by far the best compromise i have come across.
I have cast a measured 143 yards with one (and I am far from the fittest, strongest angler) and yet they are soft enough to not to bump fish at the net and you can still get pleasure and feedback from a fight. Win win in my book.

Couldn't agree more. You buy a rod for what you need it to do. "Casting, playing fish, margin work or boating".

Agree at the extreme ends of rods design - for me 143yds is fine, ive never needed to cast further. Yet the 13' Aviator still retains an acceptable fish playing action and doesnt bump fish off at the net.
At extreme ends I have a set of 3lb Century graphene rods that are amazing for fish playing but are only good for casting 80yds - a set of C2-D rods that will cast 200yds plus (in the right hands) - but are too stiff on small carp to enjoy the fight.
My point is - you don't have to buy a rod just for casting, or just for fighting fish - there are plenty of rods that can do both but won't cast as far as a rod designed for casting or one designed just for fighting fish.
If ii didn't have to cast further sometimes - I would use the 3lb graphene rods all the time.

Yes mate, I use 9ft rods in 3.5lb su. Own a set of 12 foot rods but hardly ever use them. I prefer not casting further than 50m or so. Anything further I'd boat out simply because I am paranoid my rig is not sitting right. I absolutely love playing fish on a smaller rod it's less bulky and easy to maneuver at night or during the day in a boat... as for 13ft rods I soley believe they are build for pure casting as the added length will give you that arc and propel the lead further than a rod of 9ft. My opinion would be if you play fish on a 13ft rod and one feels that you might bump the fish just add a extra few meters of mono leader if you not going to cast to the horizon. So just look for a rod that bends in the but aswell. Most of the 13ft rods if seen "and it's a personal thing" is they have a stiff blank down under and a medium to hard tip which I don't like... the scopes tend to bend enough when I apply pressure to the fish...

Don't know if this makes sense but personally I'd get/use a rod to suit the purpose of my fishing. 13ft rods I believe is a casting tool. At 200 yards I'd definitely get my donking kit out to go and investigate the bottom... I'd never trust such a large rod even with braid on my reels to tell me what's on the bottom... n3vermind casting to fish at that length... lol sorry I must be high jacking the thread.... Nothing like picking another anglers brain and having a good read on opinions... keep well mate 🍵

Might be a bit daft but I find I need 3 sets of rods to cover all the distances and scenarios I encounter carp fishing. I would never expect my 13 ft distance rods to be players rods. By the time you have brought a carp in from 140 yards plus you don't have a lot of playing the fish at your feet to do anyway?

Same here - I used to take C2-D, ADV1 and 3lb Graphene.
Now I take just 13' 3.5 Aviators and if I think I'm going to be fishing close in I put the graphenes in the car as well.
Anybody who thinks that the Aviators don't cover casting and playing - give them a try.
If an old git can get 143yds out of them think how far you'll manage!

From memory the list you have here is stiffest top to softest bottom, the TE is up there with the Trebuchet is stiffness and functionality.
Harrison's website, and that of some of their recommended rod builders list the rods in order of stiffness.

The Aviator TE is the stiffest carp rod they have produced, I cast one on a lesson and it's akin to a spod rod.

I also had a set of full fat trebuchet 13ft and surprisingly they did bend with a fish on. They were heavy and clearly a tool for the purpose of fishing at maximum distance but had an epic battle at close range with a good fish hooked at range and they coped really well (on a braided shockleader too.)

To answer the original question it's worth thinking about how far you need to go realistically. If you need to be at absolute max range 150+ regularly to be in with a chance of a take then I think you'll have to sacrifice playing.

If your talking 120-140 then the Aviator plus and Torrix TE will do that and they both bend nicely with a fish on.
