Came across an old video from fox where rob Hughes dives in a weedy water. In the past I've definitely had the odd take from a solid bag with a heavy lead crashed right through the weed. Although it's not my first choice by any means. After watching the video it appears a hopeless tactic. RH can't actually ever even find the rig amongst the weed. The only takes come from the clearer spots.
Just wondering what your thoughts are on this tactic and whether you've ever had much success with it. I've been considering using it for a few weeks until the weed dies back but I'm not so sure now.

I've always baulked at guys that think a bag is a chuck-anywhere method. It's not. I'd certainly never chuck one into heavy weed.

better off using it as like a parachute to sit on top of the weed rather than crashed in to it imo.
but yeah, wouldnt be chucking in to 4ft+ of thick weed at all.

and yet its defo worked for me, not caked up thick weed but weedy all the same

For sure, it can work (I've seen spots from above where I've wondered how I've ever got a bite from them) but I don't think you can guarantee presentation, which for me is what it's all about.

I've fished a solid bag in weed in the past and where the bag has gone in the weed has kind of wrapped itself around it, no way a fish would get to that and presentation zero. After Winding a ball of weed in I found the complete contents of the bag within it !
Pretty sure it depends on weed type too, low lying Canadian no problem, but thick beds of Canadian reaching the surface no way.

The weed beds on my track can be 17ft deep, really lovely to look at mind you in the gin clear water from the boat. No way in the world would a solid bag work chucked into that.

yup, when weed gets so deep it don't work.
Same as a helicopter rig chucked in the same spot.

The bag sits up on the weed , melts then the lead drops into the weed i would imagine, its just common sense, the hook will then hook up on some bit of weed and your not fishing. Some of the weed on the lake i fish looks like brambles from above, no way you should fish in that in my opinion also as said before presentation is crap at the best , stinks of desperation lunking pva bags in weed beds.
Ill probably be trying it in a month or so.

Alternatively, if you're not having to fish long range, a little lead of less than an ounce, and a long narrow PVA bag can be very good in thick Canadian...

Ever thought of using a flat bottom method for presenting on weed? The large flat base sits much better than an inline lead and gives a very similar presentation - only aided by the shape of the feeder. Unconventional, but it works
Solid bag, no lead. Plenty of casting weight. End up freelining on top of the weed. Sort out the issues yourself.

Crap tactic mate - it will drag your rig into the weed and you'll have zero presentation.
Sa tactic I've used to good effect is heli setup (360 rig) but push your top bead a foot deeper than the weed you are fishing over, then critically balance your hook bait. Have a 4 bait stringer with wafters looped over your hook and the point foamed up. Cast to your spot and the hook link will ride up to the top bead with the lead sinking in through the weed. Once your foam goes, your rig will slowy flutter down ad rest on the weed with your hook bait sitting proud, the wafters will also be suspended in the top strands of the weed.
Checked the rig many a time from the boat and it's pukka everytime.
Give it a go, you'll be surprised.

Hi James. Thanks for your reply. Yeah that's pretty much been my go to tactic since June but the weed is getting much worse now so I was mulling over different tactics. The solid bag approach in weed isn't one I've ever been that convinced by, just wondered what everyone else's feelings are and it seems pretty much the same as mine.

I'd agree with James. Although if I had to mention anything in addition to his post I would put two pieces of foam on. I've noticed one piece sometimes just doesn't cut it to the top enough. Two pieces almost always ensures it's pushed to the top bead before dissolving or coming off your hook area.

Please dont think im trying to start an argument just discussing things, im assuming you use light leads when fishing like this , and therefore it wont penetrate too far into the weed? Id be anxious that it had been pulled in but i can see it working well with most types of weed, as previous suggested long pva bag and light leads would also provide a similar presentation.. Would also depend on depth of weed to some degree and density.
So many different types of weed need different considerations really , At this moment the weed in my sindicate is 10 foot of weed in 12 foot of water in some places and clear in others its moving about daily and growing like wildfire recently its different every day down there. It seems to be growing a foot a day in some areas, from the boat its like looking down into a bramble bush in places.
