As far as I am aware , a good deal of our tackle we buy
Is made in china,
I , personally, would be very happy to pay more
For non chinese made gear.
Are there any companies that are mainly non chinese?
It could be a decent selling point going forward.

I agree. We have all become too reliant on "cheap" foreign imports, but at what costs? We went from being the workshop of the world after the advent of the industrial revolution to an economy where selling insurance seems to be our driving force. That may be a bit simplistic but our lack of producing goods is certainly evident when we didn't make any ventilators in this Country or struggling to produce enough PPE for the NHS. I know the outbreak of Corona Virus is something that practically no-one could have predicted but it has exposed the weaknesses. When China went into lockdown early in the year, many manufacturers in this Country went into reduced working as they relied on them to produce the nuts and bolts of machinery and we only assembled them over here.

Unfortunately there will be a massive global recession and unemployment will surge in the months and possibly years to come. I hope that responsible Companies will look beyond the bottom line and start to invest in this Country so we are better prepared to weather any storms on the horizon.

Will those at Korda, Nash and Fox etc. listen? They will if enough people ask them questions and boycott them if they refuse to act. The power for change is in our hands if enough people challenge the system that we have allowed to become the norm and put our own interests first, even if it does seem more expensive in the short term.

would imagine its almost impossible to compete with the factory style manufacture in china now, and financially impossible to make everything you require in this country and still compete with someone who still takes advantage of the global economy. It would take a lot of people to take a moral stand at the same time and that doesnt happen in business very often i would imagine.

Completely follow the sentiment in this thread. I have stopped buying anything Chinese from now on, having traded directly with the country in a big way in the past.

thing is a lot of the imported stuff is just crap that needs to be replaced every few years. now some want to replace every few years due to innovation and just cos they like shiny stuff, and that's fair enough.

but higher prices can mean lower cost if design and quality are superior. This is where I think there is still hope for British manufacture. Defiant, JAG, Dymag Tackle, Harrisons etc are examples of this. Proud to say I use gear from all these companies and it's outstanding.

Reuben Heaton is another. Presumbaly manufactured in the UK?

We are very very good at design and manufacture when we put our minds to it.

Yes, I've been as guilty as the next person in buying as cheaply as possible. But you have to look at a balance sheet objectively. Yes, you can buy cheaply from China. But the other side is high unemployment and higher taxes for those working (or on a pension) to prop up those not working on unemployment benefit and the social unrest that is associated with it. Suddenly that "cheap" item doesn't seem quite so cheap after all. We've sleep walked into allowing the huge industrial juggernaut that is China to provide for us but it has flexed it's might with it's tangled web of corporate takeovers and debt management to ensure that the world dances to it's tune. I hope that the positive of this terrible virus is that people start to realise what the real cost of buying "cheap" really means.

yes, as long as they cut, form etc material then I'm happy. Just assembly less so. Testing no chance.

if you're going to make the agrument imported materials don't count then very little is made in China either.

Good luck with that sentiment bud a lot of people on here can't wait for a cheap Chinese rip off of any product and they're all over it.

Thing I find strange at the moment is the seeming complete lack of anger on a political level over where the virus came from.

I mean 9.11 the flames had hardly gone out and boom America was marching off to war with Bin Laden and anyone else who fancied it.

This virus has already killed three times more New Yorkers than 9.11 and yet....Mmm nothing

Trump bombs China - or the W.H.O. Or whoever else he's blaming this week - and more innocent people die?

Maybe most people have got better things to worry about right now...

When you consider the wages in UK and China then you will realize that UK tackle don't want to be just a bit more expensive but 3 to 5 times as expensive.

None of the present British manufacturers are - there's only one reason to make stuff in China, very cheap FOB product = massive profit margin to company and also the retailer, it's as simple as that.

I've seen paperwork a few years ago for Bivvys that cost £450 each, FOB $34! (£17.00 each at the time)

But look on the flip side, if made in UK it lasts ages - while your using it your not buying another same product, hence a throw away attitude of all consumer goods.

There is no better time to reset your buying criteria and reevaluate national (dirty word) benefits. The same can be said in regard to climate change. Your spending choices are crucial and dictate in what direction the world turns.

Agree with this. Read an article on fashion trends in the future that predicted a move away from cheap imported items and more towards bespoke longer lasting items. Mainly driven by environmental concerns growing and the impact of fast fashion on the environment. I think the virus will accelerate such change e.g. people working from home more, more use of electronic communication, less travel. The environment is improving from all this and many people don't want to go back to how things were. I don't see why it can't be the same trend with tackle, people love good UK made items and will pay more than original cost for some older items.

maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean

it seemed you were surprised that there hadn't been an angry response to China, and then gave an example of military action after 9/11 - so I thought you were leading toward the idea that should be the next step now. apologies if I've got that wrong. like i say - I think (most) people have prioritised the need for trying to keep people safe than waste valuable time and energy on getting angry at someone. Although I'm sure it won't be long...

As I say, if I've read it wrong, apologies.

In more general reply, some things to think about regarding this thread (and the others that are saying the same things)

Why China and why now? Is it just a knee jerk reaction to the (incorrect) idea that the whole of China is responsible for Covid-19?

Who do you think would actually be affected by your not buying from China / companies that outsource there? It would be the bottom of the chain that is affected i.e. the low paid workers who have little to no choice about their employment situation (unlike the lazy arses here who can't even be bothered to get off the sofa to go and pick crops... but that's another rant for another thread)

Are you going to apply your new found morality across the board? Will you limit this to just fishing kit, or are you going to try and apply it to all your purchases? (Good luck there...) Say goodbye to your tech, and your inexpensive clothing, and your Nike trainers, and ... so on and so on....

And are you going to limit it to China or are you going to look at the appalling human rights records of the other countries that British firms outsource to / trade with / turn a blind eye to?

There's a good read for people here if you really do feel strongly about it.

https://www.amnesty.org/en/countries/

btw - this is by no means me standing up for the Chinese economy - just being objective and realist

The new world order - more people, more demand, those that produce the most and sell cheap get the trade, the small producers can't compete and go out of business. We are all to blame.

When Brexit got the vote many thought that the UK could regain it's manufacturing status and we would become self sufficient. Unfortunately time has moved forward and for us to backtrack to the 'glory' years would cost way too much for the average person.

Besides, much of China's cheap crap is repackaged and sold as expensive crap and we lap it up. The lines are blurred.

As for 'getting revenge over China' WTF? If you can prove that Covid19 is man made and was released by China, WHO or Aliens then yes, you may have a beef with somebody but as all experts claim it to a natural virus that just happened to come from some bat eating local, who ya gonna bomb? The guy that ate it or the dead bat?

Get real people. I know that people involved in WW2 wouldn't buy Japanese or German goods but they missed out on most of the good cars by doing so. Boycotting China is a bit like boycotting space because an asteroid killed the dinosaurs .

There is not a major outpouring of vile towards China at this time because all countries want PPE, medical supplies and goods from them to see their countries through this pandemic. Once the dust has settled and a vaccine of sorts found and people/economies start to recover then the blame game will start big time.

Yes what I was trying to say is I find the duality of it very bizarre.

The 9.11 incident drew an immediate and brutal reprisal which continues to this day....I wasn't suggesting that this course of action is the way to go quite the opposite really.

The current situation we find ourselves in is probably easier to pin on a certain country and has claimed far more lives however...no response...admittedly yet.

Perhaps China has a lot more of a grip on the World economy as a whole than any of us imagined possible.....nuclear power station ownership...5G etc etc.

Or perhaps the lack of oil or a required regime change ?

Could the 1.1trillion dollars that the US owe to China be a factor...? (about 5 per cent of their economy 'owned' by China...)

And as you say, no oil reserves to appropriate or infrastructure rebuild to sell out to tender to US or UK companies....

Oh dear.

Some of the posts on here make me laugh.

A. It would be practically impossible do go fishing with products that have no link to China.
B. Why stop buying Chinese now? If it's Coronavirus then that's a laughable reason.
C. The notion that UK made is better than Chinese made just because of Geography is again daft.

I don't think there is the slightest possibility of a boycott voluntary or otherwise, of Chinese products. I was under the impression but will apologise humbly if I am wrong, but don't Free Spirit build their rods in the UK on imported blanks, hardly made in England.

wonder if the government would consider a 'Made In Britain' accreditation scheme with sensible qualification clauses. Something like at least 50% of the materials sourced within the UK and 75% of the manufacture, something like that. They could even have a rating system say A (100% British sourced and made), B (50%) and C (25%). Something like that. Yes there would need to be a Standard written and an auditing body etc but I think many people would buy into that.

“Made in Britain” is not a problem, but materials can only be obtained from the location they are sourced.

Bit like this example – I drink Yorkshire tea, but there are no Tea plantations in Yorkshire, but there is the skill/experience to take a raw ingredient and make it into something special

I'm guessing that moving even 5% of production from China to UK is just impossible.

I'd doubt we have the workforce or infrastructure.

Also, feelings might be high at the moment but give it 6 months after the peak and people will just go back to buying Chinese made because it's cheaper.

I don't think so – this is different, I speak to many firms on a weekly basis (None fishing related) and all of them are “Frightened” of the sheer influx of work that's been brought back to the UK, and these are companies with very full orders books anyway, but they will cope I'm sure.

This unnecessary Covid pandemic is the one that really has “Broke the Camel's back!” as regards China.

I hope you're right mate. To be honest there will still be demand for cheap tackle, but it doesn't have to come from China. Plenty of other places around the world that manufacturing can shift to. And it will.

I will not knowingly buy Chinese though for the future. It's not just this pandemic...it's human rights, animal rights etc etc. **** them.

Obviously all that is made with materials not available in the Country that the product in manufactured, be it UK, France, and Germany etc.............

If you want the best Cork for a Rod's handle you go Portugal.

If you want Titanium you go Russia or China, there's no Titanium mines in Europe.

If you want good Whisky you go Scotland and proper Tweed.

That's reality.

Can I make a suggestion without - hopefully - causing offence?

Uk carp anglers not buying some fishing tackle won't affect the Chinese economy. It's - excuse the pun - a drop in the ocean. And if the factory that makes blanks or whatever sees a decline in trade they'll simply diversify and make something else. This is business. They won't shut up shop because Nash or whoever stop ordering...

So - if this whole thing has made you more aware and you have a new found desire to make a positive impact in countries with poor human and animal rights records, find a body that fights this and donate.

Amnesty international is a good place to start. As is the Worldwide Fund For Nature / WWF.

Maybe do both. Stop buying goods that are from the places you disapprove of AND donate to those who actively fight them on a day to day basis.

Try matched funding. For every quid you spend on bait, make a like for like donation.

It's just a thought.

Peace and love
