Such bad news.
The money would be better spent on more 12 carriage trains and more frequent train services per hour on all the existing infrastructure and routes people use, so you ain't travelling by cattle 🐄 class.

If they hadn't of destroyed the railway infrastructure we had, the country would be far better connected and we wouldn't have to be building things again from scratch...plain bonkers!
Anyone remember the 30 billion China mismanaged in 2011 on their high speed rail, or the millions California paid for "Advisers" that turned out to be friends of the budget managers.
Well if there is something out politicians are bloody good at is mismanagement of budgets and filling the pockets of their friends.
This is the same as every other high speed rail network around the world, extremely expensive and only the few at the top benefit.

If the decision to go ahead with this vanity project goes ahead, it really does convince me that be it a Conservative or Labour or whatever government they are all as stupid as each other!
HS2 has been going for a few years anyhow so it was rubber stamped a long time ago.

Once an intentionally low figure is tendered to make it attractive it should be fixed, see who is willing to take on the project then!
It would be interesting to know of how many (if any) major projects, that once greenlit, have come in on budget, and how much over budget they are at completion.
Has there been any indication of ticket pricing? Rail travel is currently almost unaffordable to a lot of people, who is this high speed line aimed at?

I work for a company that is in a JV with two other companies and they were awarded Lot C1 which is for the Chilterns Tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct......
I was asked if I would like to join that project as I've got experience on the Railways/Underground.
I told them I would rather quit than work on that project.
Never fished the Valley, never lived there either just don't agree with it. I've worked on bypass's/new road builds in the past and the devastation to the surrounding land put me off working on any project like that ever again.

Heritage is made, as this will be.
I used to be against HS2, mainly for reasons repeated below. Get it done now is my view. Boris can surely come up with somekind of catchy "Get HS2 done" and you'll all forget the issues and start chanting the mantra

Regarding the devastation,I travel North Via the A1 /A14 corridor a few times a year... what a hideous blot/scar on the landscape it is now..from gently undulating land to a flat and desolate fieldscape. Yes something needed to be done but at what cost? I appreciate nature is / will to a degree slowly reclaim what was lost but even so its not pretty..

Nothing needed to be done regarding train travel between the north and London. As things stand, it only takes two hours to London from Runcorn or Warrington, three hours from Newcastle, and most of us only make that journey once in a while, or a blue moon. Someone needs to ask what sort of timescale is envisaged for this sack of **** to be profitable and if given an estimation you may just be able to work out the ticket cost.
I'm reckoning about 200 quid per journey.
So, people will drive or fly.

I know what you're saying Toddy and completely understand. It's not the time the journey takes its the frequency of the trains and capacity. 14 trains an hour out of Manchester to the overcrowded awful south and 14 from Euston to our mersey paradise. 1100 space's per train if demand is high enough for extra coaches.
Everyone knows the problems that upgraded regional roads make when they hit the M6/M1. Huge congestion until they make the Motorway wider. That's effectively what they are doing with HS2. Time will tell if they also sort the regional routes out cause without those it is all pointless.
Mainly because most goods come across the channel then need to move up the country. Conversely most UK goods are manufactured in the Midlands/North and move to southern ports. Perhaps Brexit will alter where goods come through and other ports regionally will take over from the south.
