Caen or St Malo is a shorter drive in France, but a long ferry journey than Calais.

The overnight crossing from Portsmouth to Le Havre is ok too.

This gives you a fairly pain free run down to Limoges.

Newhaven-Dieppe overnight

Rouen / Drux / Chartres / Orleans / Limoges . Easy drive , overnight ferry puts you in Limoges at the perfect time 😉

I guess it depends on where you live.?

South east = tunnel to Calais
A16 / A28 Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, round Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon and Limoges

Easy drive, time goes quick on the way there, as you're excited.

Time goes quick on the way home, as your flat out to make the train booking.

I'm off to limoges in April and I'm looking at the newhaven dieppe crossing. The costs don't seem much more expensive at all compared to the shorter dover Calais crossing is this right?

I use this route several times a year and find it really good value. The overnight (with cabin) also means you arrive early in the morning and nice and fresh for the drive down to Limoges.

Hi

I've done the Newhaven crossing.

My only issue is the stress of driving down from Cheshire, hitting a delay & missing the boat.

As the next crossing is over 6 hours.

Dover has regular crossings so a delay isnt such a big issue as they sail every hour ish

cheers Mike

I'll be going from nottingham and it's a slightly shorter trip down than to dover with the added bonus of a few hrs kip and a shorter journey on the other side. Had all look and the boats either 11pm or early mornings

Newhaven-Dieppe overnight means you can get there early and go to the Hope pub that faces the boat . Great food , even had a live bad the last trip in October . Then after a relaxing time you board and can use the sleeping chairs , 3 hours kip and a blast the other end see's you through Rouen before the locals have woken up , perfect .

Sleeping chairs are fine , just take a pillow , but obviously a cabin would do the job 👍.

Depends on if you can sleep sitting up, plus you can get **** in them that just want to watch there phones with no headphones.

I would recommend the cabins, pay the extra for a 4 berth. Get on have a couple of pints, go for a couple of hours sleep, have a quick shower and hit duty free while the boat is docking. Leave the boat feeling totally relaxed and refreshed for the drive down. If you do the over night make the most of the buffet breakfast and you won't need to stop till you hit the lake.

Spend the extra and get a cabin for sure. Only time I got the chair I ended up with some fat lump next to me who could snore for England. I ended up walking about all night and having a kip in the motor the other side once id got off.

Dover Calais Friday. Stop near chateauroux or Orleans at a cheap formula 1 or ibis hotel. Food, drink etc. Breakfast then a leasurely few hours drive Saturday morning, arriving your destination refreshed.

I always drive

the quickest I've done it was on the way back from Limoges it took me roughly 6 1/2hrs and that was pretty much doing a ton all the way with a pit stop for 1/2hr

That drive back just kills us, takes me a week to fully get over it.

Looking at it this year and started packing up at 6am sat morning boat comes over at 8ish, load boat, empty boat, load van, drive to chalet, settle up, shower grub then off too tunnel, once off tunnel it's another 4.5hours more like 5 at least too Manchester, drop pal and gear off then home for about 1.30am Sunday morning.

How ever you do it it's like a 20 hour mad rush, far from soft but I'm wounded after that performance.

Looks like the ferry with a cabin as below could be a god send 😀, just always in rush to get back once the trips over for some reason.

2021 were going too Limoges for a week then up to Reims/vitry for another week then home, the trip from vitry area is a doddle compared too limoges🤯🤯

Great lake. We were there at the end of May last year. there is a campsite just down the road. WE travelled down on the friday and went there for the night. 2 mins from the lake.

if you want any info let me know. we had a great week just before they spawned and got really lucky.

I've driven from Calais hundreds of times (I've lived in the Dordogne for the last 13 years) if you get to Paris at the right time it's the quickest way by far !!

I always do Calais but I normally drive Friday night and stay in a motel, you can get a motel for about £35 a night nothing flash but its got a bed and shower.
then drive the last couple of hours in the morning. limoge takes about 7 hours in total as a steady 70 - 80 mph

I live in Portsmouth and still go Dover Tunnel, I did the Ferry overnight to Caen once never again.

To expensive and I cant sleep in the chairs .

A cabin maybe but even more expensive I don't doubt.

Cabins are a must on an overnight, depends what crossing and when but I've had them for as little as £18 , normally about £30 / £35 though.
Newhaven/Dieppe is a good middle ground , not as far to go as Dover (for me) and a hell of a lot cheaper than the P'mouth crossing.

We've been going down to the Limoges area for years and our preferred route is always the Eurotunnel.
I did the Ferry out of Dover a couple of times and its just tedious compared to the tunnel.
We like the lack of stress on the way home in particular. If something happens that delays us we know we can just get another train quite easily and they normally let you board two earlier or later for free.
When you've been diverted off the autoroute cross country for an RTC its nice not to worry.
We normally do the Paris route as we get the tunnel about 01:00 and are normally leaving Paris as it gets light. Its busy and they drive like nuts but its not very busy.

Might try the Rouen route one day asI used to do that every year going down to Le Mans and it was more chilled.
