I seen someone handling their rigs and bait with gloves on so I asked why. Apparently the **** on your hands from fags will transfer on to the bait/rigs and the carp won't go near it cos they can sense the nicotine. I didn't really have much to say to that so just carried on to my swim. Anyway it got me thinking, wouldn't you contaminate the rig when wetting the knots with saliva? Any thoughts on this?

I think it's all about confidence. Give it a try and if it adds to your confidence then why not? If it feels like a waste of time don't bother. Thinking about it whilst I don't smoke or use gloves I handle hookbaits as little as possible, never really thought why.
That said who's to say the nicotine won't add some form of attraction?

My own opinion is, it's absolute nonsense, i used to smoke, and when putting bait out with a catapult, i used to put a few baits in my mouth at a time, and just hold the pouch to my mouth for another bait, it was like automated, and was a fast way of putting bait out. I still do it now at the right range, although i don't smoke now.
Anyway, it certainly never stopped me catching back then, and i honestly wouldn't give it a second thought. The only things i try not too contaminate bait with, are soap or wipes, or petrol for the stove.

I think carp actually can taste Tobacco somehow...my mates who smoke cigarettes always seem to do really well and since I started smoking cigars when fishing a few years ago my catch rate has gone up too

Some in the match angling seem to think that it does go into the bait. But that said I dont think it makes much of a difference. Bit like the old story of a womens scent. I've stopped wearing HRHs' perfume now as it was getting too costly.

I'd say it's up to him but from my match fishing days back in the 80's nearly evryone was always puffing away so if they think it's tosh and their livelyhood might suffer if it's true I'd say it doesn't make much difference.
Re petrol stoves, I hate getting petrol on my hands when Carp fishing as it makes me worry for the obvious reasons...but....in the states a quick spray of WD40 equiv is a favoured method for lure/jig fishing...go figure

I use gloves when using particularly fishy smelly glugged baits or some marine hail oil or similar, or when making up pva sticks or ground bait with the same in. I do have an overly sensitive nose though ...must have been a dog in a previous life

I'll be giving the gloves a miss then. In the same boat with a petrol stove, I always manage to get it on my hands lol. Question about soap though, what do you use to wash bait buckets and bait making equipment with? I usually try and use just hot water but I find when you start using cod liver oil in your bait etc it really does stick to the bucket. Last time I used it I washed the bucket out like 5 times and you could still smell it lol
I can re fill a stove easily without getting petrol on my hands. I carry fuel in a Sigg aluminium fuel bottle, i have the tops with the little spout on. No problem.
If you do get petrol on your hands, clean off with a big wipe, then a neutral wipe, done!
I carry a small tub of Big Wipes, as they protect against Weils disease, and the neutral wipes, to get rid of any soap or chemical smell.

I am really funny with anything that I think could taint a bait. I won't put fuel in my car on the day I go fishing, I handle hookbaits the minimum I can, I even don't use shower gel or anything like that on the day I go.
Not that it seems to make that much difference, I blank either way!

I'm glad as a teen I never gave in to my mates trying to get me try smoking.Both my parents smoked and I hated it,my clothes used to stink of it.I think its a horrible habit and seeing pregnant women smoking really does boil my piss

I used to smoke when I was young and stupid and never really thought that was the reason I'd blanked.
As to giving up smoking - I found you need to want to give up. Once your mind set is made up, it's then pretty easy. One morning I was waiting for the train into the city and thought, that's it. Fags went in the bin and have never smoked since, just like that. I smoked until I was 32, giving that up was a wise move. I just can't fathom why I even started, peer pressure I suppose and the need to fit in. Must say, I used to enjoy a fag when I was fishing - kind gave you gave you something to do when session fishing. Don't miss it though, not one bit.
Vaping? Don't kid yourself, it is still smoking and time will tell, but I bet that's hardly doing your chances of dying early from cancer any favours either.

Me too, never even tried it. My Mum died 2 months ago of lung cancer, aged 61, and my Dad has been given a few weeks left at 66 - he's got throat and bladder cancer. Both have smoked since their teens.
Should be enough to put anyone off, but the addiction is so strong it doesn't make any difference.

I have smoked on and off for the last 30 odd years, however, in the last 12 years or so i have only smoked when fishing....I can go for weeks between sessions without even thinking about ciggies then go through 20 or 30 in a session....only said to the missus yesterday how stupid that is but that is me all over, bit of a binger!
Not fishing now until New Year so am going to have a concerted effort to kick the fags into touch once and for all.

Indirectly I'd say its caught me more fish too.
I'd always pack up if I was running out of fags, I don't have that worry now...... In fact my mate was about to pack up once as he'd run out and I gave him the rest of mine as I was going. 3 hours later he had a 35.8 fully scaled mirror undoubtedly one of the best fish around.

I purchased an electronic cigarette few months ago and fill it with kuku juice that has no nicotine so there's nothing addictive and I've noticed no effects on my health either. It's just the movement of hand to mouth and inhaling it for something to do whilst sitting there.

Once I'd caught it all clicked and I realised that my nicotine ridden fingers had f all to do with it . . .I'd switched baits to Essential B5 and the gloves and boilie grabber got binned . . .

I'm sorry I can't remember the man's name but back in the day a big carp was caught from billing aquadrome. The story I read of the capture included details of how the bait was prepared with nicotine tainted fingers so that the hookbait would be the same as the hookbait on the day. There's not much new in angling. The vast majority is recycled. Read Izaakk Walton.
