In reply to Post #68 Coleman c500 canister.

In reply to Post #71 do you have a link for the connecters please?
In reply to Post #70 I do the same as in the video but I think he does not do it long enough I dont need to do it so many times
as I do it longer to get more gas out so allowing more liquid in
In reply to Post #69 Do you vent off the excess air pressure using the main valve (as in the video) or using the pressure relief valve (the smaller recessed one).
You can see the small initial burst of white mist that is the gas (propane) that is vapour above the air in the tank. Can you not keep bleeding more air out rather than the stop/start method being shown?
In reply to Post #68 yes thats exactly how I have been filling my 1lb coleman propane bottles for years but I never fill them to the max only about 75% just to be on the safe side

In reply to Post #65 One is propane and one is a mixture of propane and butane. Essentially what the call patio gas I think. I chant remember which way round it is but propane is better in colder conditions compared to butane……or like I said….the other way around. A mixture of the two is obviously a go between. Either of them are fine for 90% of British conditions

In reply to Post #64 I think I just worked out I was 100% the wrong way round, the near empty ones are now sitting in the sunshine ☀️☀️ 🤣🤣
In reply to Post #63 Just to clarify the difference between normal coleman C500 gas cannister, and the coleman 1lb bottles on the left.

In reply to Post #63 Just to clarify Gerry, if I’ve got half a dozen near empty canisters is it these I put in the freezer, ready to fill into a single canister ?
I have refilled my Coleman 1lb propane bottles successfully for a fair few years
the bottles you want to refill it is best if you put it into the freezer the night before
as been said I started off by weighing a brand new one as its possible to overfill one !!!
the gas is liquid and to an extent gravity fills it so my large propane cylinder is upside down and the one to be filled is underneath
In reply to Post #61 We shall see...
I have seen plenty of videos, it you get the right bits it should work.
It its successful I will take pics and post.
In reply to Post #58 There will not be enough pressure in the 25kg tank to refill the small ones
I’ve tried myself and it didn’t work
In reply to Post #59 I have bought a few types but never used them, yet...
I have a connector to fill the coleman type cans, one for the hairspray type cans, and one to transfer from one type of can to the other.
The hard part will be finding them in our ramshackle house
Weigh a full one and write the weight on the base with a sharpie. weigh an empty one and write down the empty weight. Then it's easy to refill with the right weight of gas.
In reply to Post #58 I've heard about refilling, some one on here said not to do it under any circumstances as your hand will freeze and fall off but I'm sure most of us on here have been blessed with at least some common sense.
What sort of connector is required?
In reply to Post #56 This is the last gas I'm ever buying.
After this I will be refilling from a 25kg bottle that's been in the shed for a few years.

In reply to Post #56 Is the Go System that much better?
I'd be tempted to stock up with the Coleman 6 for £22.99 and keep them warm as described on the other thread
Here

In reply to Post #55 They’re the ones I ordered baitman. Grabbed 2 at that price. Maybe I’ll get some Go System for winter use though

The best price I could find. Longtime Coleman gas user, but this go system seems to roar. Free delivery over £50.

Winfield Outdoors are doing the Go System Powersource 445G Butane Propane Gas Cartridges at a good price, just ordered 6 and works out about a fiver each delivered
Wish I’d seen this thread before, got 12 Coleman c500s for £46 delivered on the bay thinking that was a mega deal but it’s starting to cool now so maybe I shouldn’t gone for the cheapest. I thought a can of gas was a can of gas! Long time petrol user, only just converted over to gas this summer and have been loving it tbh.
RidgeMonkey do a heated cover, if it works well may be a solution

In reply to Post #50 Mate, You are welcome.
I ordered mine yesterday while fishing, arrived today when I got back.
I'm slightly different, I leave the used one in my rucksack, and put a fresh canister in as soon as I get home, so I do have the two in there. If the used canister is still quite full, I do Sharpie mark it so I know which is which.
I normally end up going onto the second canister on day 4 of a 5 day session.
In reply to Post #49 Thank you, perfect timing.
Just cleared my old van out as I had to give it back, I found 12 nearly empty canisters in the back. When they start running low I have a bad habit of sticking it in the van for emergencies and picking up a fresh one. So I don't have to carry 2

Another deal on canisters again
While they are not my favourite there is currently an offer on ebay for Coleman gas at:

In reply to Post #44 Sorry, no, even in spring as well.
I do have to go with what I can get at the lowest price, but even now in May, 17⁰C, Coleman are needing a warm water footsoak.
My preference is definitely for the Primus and GoSystem.
I have just had a proper search on eBay, sadly there are no ongoing deals at the moment.
In case it helps anyone, go system powersource 445g gas is on offer £4.99 or 2 for £9
Winfields gosystem
And if you use topcashback, possible 8% cashback too. If you don't use it, then get signed up lol Topcashback

Was in Mountain Warehouse other day
Coleman Performance Gas £26.99, buy one get one free
Unbelievable 🙄
In reply to Post #37 I agree FOR WINTER
possibly the best apart from pure propane HAS GOT TO BE Primus Power Gas rated to -15 and runs flawlessly until empty every time
If anyone is interested 6x Coleman canisters on ebay at £28.45
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325188216652
In reply to Post #37 Right an add on this:
To give them a fair chance I bought a pack of 6 Sunn Gas canisters.
They have now been used in winter weather down to -4⁰C and I can say that they do need a bit of warm water under them when the gas is nearly out at air temperatures below around 6⁰.
In reply to Post #40 Nobody is suggesting that you buy anything you don’t want to Nick
I would suggest that Primus is a more ‘premium’ brand than Coleman. Maybe you mean Coleman is more mainstream? As we all know, bigger brand and wider distribution does not necessarily mean a better product.
In reply to Post #38 Coleman 70/30. I'm not paying an extra £1 or more when I can get better canisters by another manufacturer at the same price.
By 'premium' I mean the brand name, not the actual canister. GoSystem or Primus aren't as big a name if you get me.
In reply to Post #37 never had a problem with 70/30 coleman canisters,
even when fishing in winter, wouldn't use anything else,
been ok for me.
In reply to Post #37 Which Coleman canisters are you talking about Nick? There are three in the range. The standard 70/30 (the ones with the green mountains you get in bulk boxes), the Performance and the Extreme.
I agree the standard 70/30 are not much good, but they are not a ‘premium’ product abd can be picked up cheaply in bulk from a number of places.
The Extreme are silly money (£4-5 for a C100) but they are very good in all conditions. I wouldn’t use them for fishing as the conditions do not require a gas that works below -25.
When it gets cold while fishing I either heat the canister in half an inch of water in a pan over the flame or I use the Trangia.

In reply to Post #33 I'm sad enough to have tested a few brands, and I actually posted this in the past:
I am positive I've made the point in the past about camping and caravan stores being cheaper than tackle shops.
This week I came back via my local George Sharman Camping and Caravan and decided to grab a couple of GoSysten canisters as I was passing.
£5.50 each compared to £5.99 or £6.99 in a couple of my local tackle shops.
✅
Right for the anal out there, a list of canisters I have used and I think the best to worst, these are all Propane/butane/iso-butane.
Primus and GoSystem. They both will run until empty with no need to shake or warm. In winter they are my preference.
Sunn Gas, I hadn't seen these anywhere except one of my local tackle shops, it did require a shake but worked until empty.
CADAC, will work, but in winter may need tipping on its side to completely empty.
Coleman, the premium name, yet the worst gas canister. Even in summer they need shaking or tipping on their side to empty. In winter they need heating up before you can get a decent burn out of them, even at almost new.
In reply to Post #33 I got a deal in the summer for Coleman gas canisters,20 quid for 6.They were brill in the warm weather, soon as the temperatures dropped in September, absolutely awful flow on them.I made sure I stocked up on some Primus to get me through the winter.

In reply to Post #31 I paid £30 for 6 from AD willenhall gone up nearly £10 in 2 years
In reply to Post #30 Interested on your opinion on the coleman being the worst going, been using them for as long as I can remember with no issues? I swapped from cadac if I recall a long time ago as the colemans worked better in the really cold weather. All ears if there are others that are better
In reply to Post #31 Funnily enough it was the same price 2 weeks ago
In reply to Post #27 TFT are doing 6 for 25 quid as a cyber Monday deal
In reply to Post #27 I picked up 6 Sunngas canisters a couple of weeks ago for £30 through ebay.
I went to do the same search for you and there were no Primus, GoSystem or Sunngas offers showing when I looked this morning.
I did see a couple of Coleman offers, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Coleman are the worst canisters going...
In reply to Post #28 Thanks mate
In reply to Post #27 Try Winfields outdoors, 2 for £9 + postage, or free postage if you buy a dozen (over £50)
I'm finding Go system much better than Coleman.

In reply to Post #1 They are self sealing once you unscrew so perfectly safe
In reply to Post #20 I got some from Browns Angling recently. A bit more expensive than Wow camping, but free postage, so probably not too much difference overall.
Getting hold of the Coleman C500 at a sensible price atm is difficult, plenty around on flea bay at inflated rates but will wait and see.
Buy a Trangia,...problem solved
In reply to Post #17 Unscrew gas canister from stove, put in stove bag upside down, pull drawstring and throw in the rucksack
In reply to Post #14 GoSystem have a plastic cap, the cap is new on the CADAC ones since I last bought them, they didn't used to
In reply to Post #15 Because they are self sealing.
In reply to Post #10 Mine don't either...
Cadac ones do, Coleman ones don't.
Nope, never had a plastic cap on mine
In reply to Post #10 Mine didn't Bought from Millets
In reply to Post #9 Me neither
In reply to Post #9 They all do
In reply to Post #8 I don't think any of mine have ever come with a plastic cap.
In reply to Post #1 I just unscrew mine and put it back in the rucksack with my spare clothing.
I can understand the theory of putting the plastic cap back on, but because mine is wrapped in with my clothes don't bother myself. If you keep it in with pointed items or other cooking stuff, then yes.
I would also advise to keep the plastic cap that you remove from the canister and when you unscrew the canister to replace it back on the canister when it is not in use.
I learnt from experience about 3 years ago how dangerous it is not to fit the cap on after use.
I was packing my tackle away in my car and I kept noticing the smell of butane, I just presumed it was coming from unburnt gas in the pipeline of my stove. The smell was getting stronger with every visit to the car though.
I then knew there was something amiss, when I checked my cooking bag, I found that I had packed it into a tight space and the 450 canisters valve was pushing up against something in the bag, probably a fork and releasing the gas. If I had the plastic cap on, it would have been safe.
If I had been a smoker and had a fag in my mouth and the gas air mixture had been right, I would have probably had my car go up in a fireball.
The 450 canisters are a bit safer but the smaller 220's are even worse for this to easily happen.

In reply to Post #4 that cant be very comfortable!
Made me smile (and I need that this morning).
In reply to Post #3 Thanks guys. Nice to know I haven't got to spend more money on something to keep it safe
In reply to Post #3 that cant be very comfortable!
In reply to Post #1 Yep no problem at all, I put mine inside my wooly hat just to stop it rattling around against the kettle and pot.
In reply to Post #1 Perfectly safe mate.
OK I've treated myself to a Bulin T4 stove and bought a small screw on butane canister.
My question is this, is it safe to unscrew this canister at the end of a session and just pop it in my carryall bag or do I need a safety container of some sort to put it in?
