OK, that makes sense, think I will look at the narrower one then.
Sorry for a potentially silly question, do you remove the existing mattress and out this in place or use both?
I tend to sleep on top of the bag section with a bedchair cover over me, Ironically the cover was one of Gerry's suggestions too 😊😊😊

It fits into the mattress part of most beds perfectly,if its too wide it will curl up on the surround of the bed.Ive had mine years and on lots of different beds

The first time i used both of mine they had hardly inflated after an hour so with areas still completely flat so i had to blow them up however after that initial use they have been fine and inflate themselves after a few minutes

Have just used mine for the first time for 48 hrs and it was a great improvement from previous trips , when I first unrolled it and opened the valve I left it for a hour or so, I had to blow it up a bit as the foot area was still flat, will see how it reacts the next time I use it, but a definite thumbs up from me

I will advise anyone to TRY THIS when you buy one unpack it at home
leave it on your bed for 45 mins do the valve up and try and roll it up you will then realise just how much its self inflated

I convinced my mate to buy the Helium 3.8 SIM and went on a 2 week trip after a couple of days he came round to my swim and was not a happy bunny !! Gerry you plonker you just made me waste 50 bloody quid 
That Sim is **** ? I was gob smacked and decided to take a look he had blown it up !!
I said there is your problem you plonker we squeezed the air out then just left it for 40 mins or so for it to self inflate to the correct level and did the valve up
next morning he came round grinning like a Cheshire Cat ok ok I am sorry it is one of the best nights sleep I have ever had

It may be that now the SIM has been unpacked from its factory compacted state and used, the next time it's used it won't need the extra puff of air?

It is perfectly normal and recommended to add air manually to get to a personal comfort level and it is perfectly normal for someone to prefer a bigger SIM than the model you are so passionate about. We are all different Gerry and people can decide to have differing opinions to you on this subject

Ive always suffered trying to sleep when doing nights
I used to wake up feeling like id spent a week on the p*ss and aching everywhere
Spent fortunes on beds and sold them after a few goes
Saw Gerry post about these so bought one and followed the instructions
Honestly its a game changer if your struggling
Im currently using a SP C-TECH SLEEP SYSTEM and with the Mountain fitted into the bed I wake up feeling miles better then I ever have before ..... I still sleep poorly but Im a very light sleeper so its normal but Im not waking up aching
Never had any issues with condensation or anything like this at all .... Just a shame no camping/mountaineering companies have tried making beds as Im pretty certain they'd do a better job then most angling companies who seen to think by making it DPM covers up for all the inadequacies

For some reason I have to sleep on my left side, I also have a bad back. I have a Nash ss3 bed and got a 10cm sim which fits the bed perfectly. Unfortunately it's too thick to fold up in the bed so I have to put it under the bag when I set up. It has transformed my time on the bank.

Oh dear Simon sorry to hear this sadly its a common mistake mate people
treat it like an air bed not realising they are ruining the performance of it they just dont get how a Sim works

They taper off at the ends as most are designed for the minimalist lightweight, wild camping ,bike packing or bushcraft market,whereby the sleeping bags are mummy shaped or the quilts that are now in vogue..ie tiny pack size
Some sims are also only three quarter length, as designed just to protect the torso on a long hike ,or cycle..
I put my multimat 25 inside my original aqua sleeping bag,and that's where the tapered sim comes into its own,it stops,for me,any so mentioned over body heating..

I am saying that the sim i bought is narrow, its 44cm at the bottom and 50 at the top, and i feel like it would be more suitable if it was wider. Yes it is, i have both. The glacier 5.0 fits my wide sp bed perfectly. It dosent taper off at the bottom either like the 3.8

my Trakker ELS that I originally bought the Helium 3.8 for is W88cm wide
isnt YOUR Fox bed only 84cm wide ?
my chest size and weight was 50" chest and 17b stone at the time of purchase !! The Sim fits INSIDE the raised edge so cannot and does not move ?
and completely impossible to slip off it as there is no were to go unless you fell on the floor !
so I really cant understand your post mate UNLESS you have a wide bed version ???

wish id read this before i bought one, I bought the mountain equipment Helium 3.8 , I use a Fox flatliner bed and this sim is tapered and quite a bit narrower than the bedchair itself. i can lay on it on problem but if i move much in my sleep i would slip off it and end up half on it half off. Its just too narrow. My fault for not checking dimensions. Gonna try to send it back and get a wider one. Hope this helps someone if you do choose one.

I forgot to.say that I've bought two Vango mattresses, both of them went on the valve. I've never used the Mountain Equipment ones, although I've got one of their GoreTex bivvy/tent bags from the early 90's and that is that absolute nuts, proper bit of kit that 👌

One point about cheap SIMs
as opposed to the more expensive back packing type SIMs is the fact some of them will get lots of condensation and make your bed wet also in warm weather you will sweat like a rapist ! as they get too hot
this does not seem to happen with the expensive ones they must be breathable ?
so IMHO in this case you get what you pay for

Had one of the thinner ones and it was ok, treated myself to an Exped Megamat10 and its fantastic, adjust the firmness to suite yourself, folds up in bed with bag and as comfy as being in bed at home.

Andes explora 5cm from Amazon. Works a treat and for 25 pound you can't go wrong. Even comes in a nice khaki green if that matters to you.

The helium 3.8 was excellent and a perfect fit on my standard bedchair but upgraded to the wider mountain equipment glacier 5.0 when I got my wide solar sp bed as the 5.0 fits perfectly inside the padded outer of a wide bed as the 3.8 was to narrow so kept rolling of the edge of it. The thicker 5.0 is definitely more comfy than the thinner 3.8. I had a thermarest but didnt like how it narrowed down quite a bit at the foot end. Never really noticed any difference in quality between the thermarest and mountain equipment sims if im honest.

Mines a tracker one came on a bed chair I bought I kept the mattresses bk flowed the bed chair on very comfortable but Jesus it's makes the sleeping bag hot which for winter will b fantastic can't wait only trouble is I bought a snug park Antarctic bag for this winter I really can't c I'll need it with the mattresses

Original and the best is Thermarest trail pro in size large which is 5mm thick .... I think the thickness does make a difference even on a bedchair so go for thicker over thinner imo. I like the Thermarest as the R rating is higher which is preferable for winter . I also have a couple of Mountain Warehouse 5mm Glacier SIMs ... They are pretty good but not quite the quality of Thermarest .... All fold up fine in bedchair

My Mountain Equipment Helium 3.8 Warm Zone Sleeping Mat stays put and does not get too hot either
the BIGGEST mistake people make is not fully understanding how a sim WORKS and they blow into it ?
but ITS NOT an air bed !!!!
the idea is its a very small amount of air that has room to move around as your weight lays on it bit like a water bed
it really isnt rocket science simply follow the bloody instructions 
I realised this was the problem when a few years ago I went with a pal on a 2 week trip and had convinced him to buy the Helium 3.8 SIM 2 nights in he said I just wasted fifty quid they are rubbish !! I was gob smacked and decided to take a look he had blown it up !! it was solid

I have one similar and I love how it firms my bed up and how comfortable it is. But it heats up so much, I feel like I am in a slow cooker..
Next thing I'll need is one of those cooling fans underneath my bed :0)

I can point you in the direction of the Multimat adventure 25,the mat is even advertised for fishing..
It's a nice green colour ,stays on my Avid RT,at all times..and is nice and comfy,if it broke I'd buy another ASAP, I use a Thermarest Venture,which is mouth or blow bag inflated,that's for on the deck.!!
I also,slightly, topic diversion, now rate the TB,guesti seat,that stays in bedchair too!

I use this one no need for any thing bigger or thicker UNLESS you are laying it on the floor but as we are putting it on a bedchair this is perfect it Fits inside the raised edges of any bedchair and thats the bit you lay on mine is a few years old now and as good as the day I bought it also it breathes and does not get wet like cheap ones do

It all comes down to the thickness of mattress as to how small the mattress will fold to. What I mean by this is say you have two mattresses, one inflates to 5cm and the other to 10cm, the 5cm one will obviously fold down smaller once all of the air is out.
As you you've probably seen, there are a mirad of different companies doing self inflating mattresses, from the likes of camping/expedition type companies to the angling companies that have copied the whole idea. I'll always recommend getting a Thermarest simply because not only did they invent the whole concept, that aside, more to the point, their mattresses will last you years and years, case in point, I've still got one from 1993 that has been around the world, slept on rocks, crap on the ground, you name it, yet it's still as good as when I first got it with no delamination of the internal materials. I did decide to get one that was crazy thick from Vango for a Fox Flatliter that lasted only 6 months before the valve went.
