I have had a couple of pins for a few years but never got around to using them until recently.
A club has taken over an ex commercial water and i thought it would be the ideal chance to have a dabble on the pin.
The marco cortesi (not a true pin) was set up on a vintage Daiwa Ivan Marks 10ft feeder rod, 8lb bayer mono and a 6lb hooklength, a size 10 hook and floatfishing 11mm banded pellets in the margin.
It was hook a duck, far to busy for me, but good fun on the light gear and pin.
This visit made me dig out my other pin and get it ready for service...
It's a Grice and Young Avon Royal Supreme, not as free spinning but all functional.
I made a line arbour to help prevent the line being kinked by the spindles.
It doesnt have a line guard so I knocked one together from some stainless tie wire we used to use on big concreting jobs many years ago.
The finished line guard is a bit rough but it will serve the purpose, but now I need to secure it.
The reel only has one hole and screw, probably for an alternative line guard design as this company often cobbled stuff together from a spare parts box!
So i decided to be brave...
I found a couple of suitable self tappers, then took the plunge. I drilled a new hole, and opened the new and original holes out with a dye thread cutter to accept the screws.
The kids are about to break up for the summer so I will take the daughter along to do some carp clubbing, she will love it.
I think she will be on a normal fixed spool reel, and I will christen my modified pin.
It's far too hectic to fish both rods at the same time so i will be her ghillie and while she has a sandwich I will have a turn on the rod.
I really want to get the pin onto my 13ft stepped up float rod and do some barbel trotting but haven't made time for it yet.
I think the Nash Specialist range were made by Century, any info?

I started off on a centrepin,I wasn't allowed anywhere near a fixed spool ,til I could underarm cast a float, play fish using one ..
I've had several over the yrs ,including a Youngs 2048,several Purist 11s,Strike rites,all sorts ,my current pin,is a Okuma Sheffield ,is not a true pin,I match mine with a 4 piece,power float rod and use it for virtually everything ,that has fins !
You'll find the line guard a hindrance after a while ,especially if you want to learn to Wallis,or variants of it ...

On my list - JW Youngs Ray Walton rolling pin . . .has the side cast function which means you can rotate the reel whilst fixed to the reel seat and cast further like a fixed spool (rather than difficult wallis casts etc) . . .currently have the poor mans version (Shakespeare Lincoln) which I use with braid for trotting etc . . .no ratchet but great fun when you hit something decent . . .

Okuma Sheffield for me.
I prefer line coming off the top, better float / fish control and less affected by wind. You do get use to backwinding.
Don’t see the need for line guards but each to their own.
Coupled with a greys toreon tactical 12ft float rod for chub to 7lb.
With hand made peacock quill floats for long trotting.
Always drennan hooks to nylon for me.

love my centrepins especially on the river for Barbel as well as Carp and Tench float fishing in the margins.

There's a south African chap who fishes my local commercial with a float rod and pin, his wallis casting is something to behold as is his fishing style in general. Big sliding peacock into 15 ft. He easily casts 20 yards maybe a bit more and wind doesn't seem too much trouble He's just as competent over both shoulders. I enjoy just watching him.
Took the daughter carp clubbing.

Im just pulling a loop of line, no reel spinning as yet. Keep it short and simple.

I have cheap modern pin that I bought 15 or so years ago, just use it for trotting the near line paired with a 13ft Drennan IM8 Super Waggler.
Haven't got as far as back spinning on the cast, three rings and an underarm chuck.
Could probably get away with thicker mono l but combined with 4lb-12oz Preston Reflow Power with 2-12oz bottom the combo has handled everytthing I've hooked, 8-9lb snotties hanging in the flow, 7lb+ chub and a few river carp into mid-doubles

Slap some braid on your pin . . .ideal for both trotting and rolling meat etc . . .strikes are a mere flick of the wrist, then hang on!
