Hi everyone.

When spodding with braid, how do you normally use the clip?

I genrally just put the line under the clip but have seen lots of video
showing people going around the clip.

The reason i ask is I had braid snap at the clip while spombing at
around 20 wraps. I did hit it a bit harder on that cast but never had
this before? (I had gone around the clip)

It was new 0.18 J Braid and only about 50 casts old.

Any thoughts and and help to protect the braid at the clip?

I always go around the clip,I do tend to do it two times though

You could try putting power gum into/around the clip first to help cushion the impact.

I go round the clip twice.

Too many people go far too thin on braid so they can feel the manly surge of adrenaline when they can hit 120yds, but they soon crumble like pussies when they crack off due to lack of durability

All these superstar anglers telling everyone to use 20lb braid so they can spomb across the Atlantic, they ain't arsed if they need to respool or loose some tackle...

I just put the same on a lure rod only
Looked at it in amazement at how thin it was for 20 odd Lb BS
Glad I'm only chucking 1-2 oz lures ...

Thin braid doesn't leave much margin for error I'd go heavier like 0.22.

Really no need for 0.18.
Crazy thin, and with braid, you won't get any distance advantage between 0.18 and 0.30 anyway.

Cheers everyone.

My original braid was whiplash 0.12 in 35lb and was great.

Bought a new spod reel so tried a new braid, most of the ready
available spod braids seem to be 0.18 and most you tube stuff
seem to be 0.18.
Obviously no mention cracking off at the clip!

Thought it just might be the clip but it looks like i will be going
back to whiplash.

You can get spectra braid in loads of different diameters 👍

Tried the Fox Exocet braid (0.18) once.

Truly awful in terms of crack offs... Went back to x8 J Braid.

If you hit the clip too hard with the rod pointing at the spod you'll snap .18 braid like cotton. You need to either feather that cast and let the rod tip take the impact or use heavier braid.

Imagine you'll be losing a good few lures on that. I'd be looking to use around 0.3mm (PowerPro 0.28 or probably 0.32mm) to give myself a realistic chance of retrieving a snagged lures of that size as well as for the boost in abrasion resistance.
I tend to use the 0.32 or 0.36 for the 1 to 3 Oz range and that's enough to straighten most sensibly sized hooks (up to about 1/0).
