Can anyone recommend a marker float set up that doesn't tangle and the float actually comes up. I currently use the korda one and it's ridiculously temperamental. Is a stem that important?

I use the large Korda balsa wood one with the little boom section to the lead. I have noticed that if i forget to add the little plastic thingy that covers the swivel on the bottom of the float it can cause issues

I've gone back to markering the old fashioned way.
Lead on the end of the line, a tubular float, bead and stop knot at the required depth. All that on a 25lb mono leader and then braid behind.
Float comes up every time (in really thick weed put in a swivel 2 ft above the lead) and with the stop knot set at the rough depth in one cast I can find deeper/shallower spots as well as weed vs clear.
If I'm mapping spots accurately then I use 2 rods - one set up as above for the detail and one set the other way (float on the end of the line) just chucked out as a fixed point.

I've got an ols Nash one, can't remember what it was called, its more bulbous than the stick shaped ones. Never had a problem with it other than the stem it came with was breaking so i I replaced it with some very heavy stiff nylon. I suppose the thin stick shaped ones are for aerodynamics, unless you're casting a long way I think a bigger body is better.
If you're struggling with the float coming up use a mono leader, amnesia.
Though you loose a little feel.

Thinking anglers do a marker float kit with a boom and bead.
I use this with the Korda float and have never had a problem. From memory i got it because i lost the cover for the swivel on the float

Freespirit SLite marker / run ring kit . . if you attach your float with a big loop (to enable quick spomb swop on the same rod) the knot can sometimes hinder the float rising - these rings are lined and alleviate the prob . . .

If you can still find one try the nash spot on marker float they seem to eliminate any tangles and pops up every time as the line is threaded through the front of the marker float.

Have you thought about just using a lead without the float? A float isn't really needed to find a spot.
Marker and spodding can be done with one rod and one reel far quicker .

I still use MCF marker floats and they are great, no issue in the float rising which was an issue with the previous Fox ones I was using

You're missing out if this is what you do. Sure you can feel about abit but you would be unable to find the bottom of slopes, holes, shallow plateaus etc,

No you don't. You can find all of those with just a lead if you know what you're doing
