I've heard people say that presenting a rig just outside a baited area, can often produce the bigger fish. What do you guys think to this theory? And also, where is it best to present the rig?...to the sides or the front?

Depends on the shape and size of the spot. Also how accurate is your baiting? Which direction are the fish likely to approach the spot from. So many variables you just have to work it out on the day.

Sides.

My baiting is not that good, my casting is not that accurate, so I bait up and lob a rig in the same area. It could be to the left, right, back or front but I'm not that bothered
The fish swim about, they can come into you area from any direction.
If they find themselves in the middle of a baited area I'm not sure if they will deliberately swim to the outskirts to feed.

This is me all over. Bait goes everywhere and I cant cast for toffee lol. As long as it is in the vicinity it will have to do

Casting is so 'last century' people want to know how much to adjust the GPS coordinates on their baitboat by mate.

I prefer a larger area of bait, I'm not a believer in tight beds of bait at any time. If I'm doing well or struggling I may try off my baited area but more out of curiosity. I do believe fish can associate tight/beds of bait with danger and may hang back. Is it coincidence that often a big fish will swim with a smal fish and usually the smaller one gets caught..hmm..ie, xs mate.

I think this is more a tactic for highly pressured waters, being concerned about which direction the fish will approach etc.
If there is a high stock for the size of lake, the fish will be quick to grab what food they can find.
I personally focus more on hook link length in relation to the size of spread.
Tight spread = short link
Large Spread = long link
Location = general vicinity since i use just boilies with a throwing stick, ranging from 8 wraps to 20 wraps, no particle as its not allowed on my club waters so i never get a tight spread of bait :(

I think if every one was honest
“Most” would be the same

I cast first wait for the dissolvable bit to float to the surface then try and bait up near it.
Wouldn't say it all lands over the top and the dissolvable bit floats away in the current but I know my bait is near my free offerings which is good enough.
Don't understand why people would bait up a spot first then spoil it by casting at it repeatedly 🤔

I know I'm an old fart who's been catching carp for 50 years, so I probably don't know much. However the first thing I learnt as a child was how to cast to where I needed the bait to go.
If anyone cant do that then i suggest you go to a field with a dustbin lid, and practice until you can hit it regularly at the distance you need to bait or cast a bait to. Saying I'm useless at casting accurately is defeatist and pointless.

It was said in jest, mostly.
Would I be confident of hitting the 'dustbin' every time? Or even first time? No, I wouldn't. Most people would be similar I reckon.
Repeated casting on my lake will spook the fish, if the first/second cast is slightly off the mark it will have to do otherwise you may as well go home.

I know what you mean, I've fished lakes where one cast with a spod would ruin your chance for at least 24 hrs. All the more reason to practice, get it right and leave it there until you get a run. We used to have a running joke where if someone got a cast spot on first time you would say," you're not going to leave it there are you?" Of course you wouldn't cast out in front of anyone, but a good friend, in those days.

Several years ago i fished in France for a week and was fishing around 20 wraps out along a old road in a gravel pit. I fished all 3 rods at same distance and had about 20 yards between the left and right rod. I solely baited boilie with a throwing stick between the left and right rod and aimed for a line of bait between the two.
I found that initially the majority of bites came from the middle rod but as the week progress it slowed down and the side ones did more bites (particularly the left from memory). Looking at my notes the bigger of the fish all came from the left as well. 6 out of 10 biggest from a 27 fish week.

Quick update on this thread....
Bit of background firstly . I've been fishing this particularly club water for the last ten years, it's a northern silty lake, about 15-18 acres. Fish stock is around 50 x 20lbers and 3x 30lbers,lake record s 34lb.There are plenty of mid doubles,so it's not exactly a runs water, but equally it's not hard either.
I have been desperately hoping to catch one of the elusive 30lbers,over my ten years on the lake, having done a monthly session on average, over those years,so approximately 100 sessions+.I had caught my fair share of 20s,but still no cigar!
Anyway last week,I posted this thread looking for something different to approach the water.I went at the weekend for 48 hrs and the results were very interesting..I'll let you guys decide and comment,on your conclusions.
I fished two rods, left hand rod 2 metres left of a baited area (about 2kg of boilie).2nd rod on a right hand spot, that has been very productive for me over the years, with just a handful of boilies over the top.The other thing to mention is,that I decided to test a different rig on my left hand rod I.E a flouro d rig with 18mm wafter,my normal set up on the right hand rod,15mm bottom bait on a kd.
The results at the end of the session were...right hand rod= 7 runs,6 landed upto 19lb.Left hand rod= 1run,1 fish landed at 31lbo3 oz! RESULT!! After all these years!!
Big question is..was that purely coincidence? Was it the change of rig? Was it fishing off the baited area?
I'd be fascinating to hear you opinions! Thanks Paul.
