To be honest it does make me laugh
when you so often get people going on about Chinese ripp off and chinese tat
I mean what planet are these people on ?
because practically EVERY FRIGGING THING is made in China and has been for years
yes there are some chinese stuff thats been made with cheap components but let us not forget the big boys state a certain quality and have to approve the many samples before they place the big order
A pal of mine sadly no longer with us that owned a couple of factory's explained it to me
when you first bring out a product all the COSTS of the tooling and jigs and big advertising launch has to be recovered first so its sold at the RRP dealers are supplied at a high price too so they cant discount it
THEN !! WHEN THE MARKET SLOWS DOWN the costs by now are recovered and a big profit to be made they supply the DEALERS with a much better rate allowing them to slash the price and a big surge in new buyers

The Chinese have the capabilities to manufacture to a very very high standard, if they're making tat, its because they've been told to by the company. I.e a price point set.

Agree - not only that but the man hours of design time / prototyping / tweaking / patent apps / legals / project management / quality control . . . add to that sales / marketing / distrubution / retailer cut . . . all outcosts that need amortising over the final roll out & customer RRP. . .the Chinese (and any other global manufacturer) are only as good at making something with the information they're given!

Bang on Gerry, if its crap its usually because it was requested to be like that (a acquaintance used to be a go between and importer).
When I co ran a brewing forum we got quotes for conical fermenters, only small ones up to 150ltr, the set up and mould came in at 10k iirc and that was a decade ago!

Totally agree, there is some very high quality manufacturing in China. I suppose alot of it is down to individual branded companys to search out decent factory's to manufacturer their designs for a reasonable bulk price to a high standard.

‘All made in the same factory' is another classic.
1) Factories make different quality items depending on the requested specs.
2) Have these people got any idea just how big Chinese manufacturing is and how many factories there are? Do they really think there are only a dozen or so lines/swivels/hooks made in one factory and just re-labelled?

Pure manufacturing output, China less than 30%, US less than 20%, then Japan or Germany less than 10%.
As time moves on China's number will continue to decline but my question is will the quality elsewhere be better ? I doubt it as decades of manufacturing has made the Chinese more capable and they have greater access to raw materials which they don't need to import.
