Good evening guys,
I always carry my gear to my swims and I am looking into scaling down the weight and amount of tackle. Currently I own (but hardly use/take) a Nash floating retention sling. I always carry a smallish bag that contains an old school weigh sling with zip (can be used as a short stay carp sack) a Rueben Heaton small scale and an extra sack.
I have been thinking about:
1 - using a combination of a weigh sling and a carp sack (JRC/Wychwood). That will save me one of 2 items I now carry
OR
2- keeping the carp sack (just for special cases like night fishing, because I really don't like to use them) and use the floatation recovery weigh sling that goes along with my landing net in my holdall. Then that also means I have saved on one item in my rucksack.
Do you think or see harm in using a non floating weigh sling or a sling that doesn't have poles? I like an old school sling that can just be stuffed in a bag without faffing around with poles and floats.

Aqua do a set of floats that you can add to your landing net to turn it into a retainer
Save carrying something else then lol

I've recently gone back to an old school type weigh sling after lugging an Aqua floating retainer weighing thing around for a few years. Not once did I use it for retaining a fish so seemed pointless lugging it everywhere with me. I leave it in the van 'just in case'. The new/old sling is tiny and weighs nothing.

how about not weighing them and just set them free ... not meant to be antagonisitic but is it really necessary to know weights and get photos nowadays?
I know that Korum do or did a very compact ,weigh sling or retainer combo,I bet if you coupled that with a set of those new Korum compact scales and utilised a bank stick to use as a weighbar,if needed..
(I got a retainer,I hate it,massive over kill ,I just leave fish in net in margins ,and set up a Dinsmores spiral point bankstick plus cheapo Chinese phone clamp...in readiness, my nice 4 thirds DSLR is at home never used ..

I nearly said that as well Paul cos generally that's what I do,well said..!
I got a massive box of 35mm pics ,only person whose interested,would be nobody lol..or when I'm in some government old peoples home ,with guards ,dogs,and gun towers,stopping relatives visiting..

No sack or retainer. Just keep in water in landing net for a few minutes.
Weigh in the jrc euro zip mat.
Luggage scales that I have are tiny, accurate and do the job.
No camera or tripod. Just use iPhone with a clip i made that clips onto the frame of my chair.

Very rare that I weigh a fish now but have been moaned at by people for not doing it.

Last fish I weighed was simply because the bailiff wanted to know weight gains for the club records
Couldn't argue as he's my brother in law lol

I still use an old school weigh sling.
I too use an "Old School" weighing sling, a Rod Hutchinson one that I bought in the 80's to replace my old Gardner one that had draw strings which I still have and use for Tench and Barbel fishing
But, I also still carry my retention sling, and cannot ever recall using it to weigh a fish in apart from one, but I only carry it just in case I get that "Special" fish, a lake record etc and I need to get it witnessed etc and just need to retain it that bit longer than normal than I would in my net and despite always setting up two nets, just in case of a multiple catch.
Another reason, I don't use my retention sling to weigh fish is, they flap around in the wind like a sail if there is a bit of a breeze making the scales a bit twitchy.
And the main reason that I have to carry my retention sling instead of a simple sack is, my club has a ban on sacks and I doubt it is not the only club that has such a ban.
