Mixing large quantities of base mix (15 posts / 2,443 views)

Want to mix base mix powders in bulk. Obviously know I could use a standard size food mixer and do it in batches but would much prefer to be able to mix up 20kg dry in one go.

Was thinking of using a big 80L bucket I've got with high sides to help stop the mess and use a plasterers mixing drill thing to mix up all the powders first which I can then use as and when. Reckon this will be alright or anyone got a better idea that doesn't cost too much?

Can anyone also recommend a decent smaller mixer to use to mix the finished base mix with liquid? Doesn't need to be too big as I can do 2 batches, then whilst rolling can leave the mixer going for the next back so should run concurrently

My mate used to roll bait commercially. They used a cement mixer.

Maybe you could get a cheap one from eBay.

A cement mixer works but go over it with some sealer on all holes and cracks to avoid dust leaking out. And make a lid or just use some thick plastic and a luggage strap or rope to close it.
Another option is to remove the paddle things and find a tall bucket with a lid that fit partially inside. Then use some strap to hold it in place while mixing.

Camping wheely water butt that folks use on camp sites.

Fill it half full with ingredients then take it for a walk up and down the road. Job done.

I have a large plastic bin with a lid that snaps on it, half fill and roll it along, if there was a small cement mixer type machine I think I would consider one, but for now....

A plasterers whisk works great for this.

Pallet bags, very thick, the smaller ones if you know anybody who works in a warehouse, chuck it all in, give it a roll around, job done

I use an old electric cement mixer. But put a plastic bin in it that has a clip on lid, I screwed paddles to the inside of the bin, it fits tight in the mouth of the mixer. Works perfectly

I used to use a cement mixer with a home made lid (you must use a lid or the finer powders will come out). To be honest it was too much hassle to drag out an use even when making 200kg of base mix every other week during the spring and summer.

Paddle mixers are great when making the dough but spread too much powder about on dry base mix.

I had some 35-45l drums with lids for storing ingredients. One of these with the lid on and rolled around for a few minutes works a treat

Recently I have started making more bait for myself and to do 5-10kg of base mix I just put it in a thick plastic sack, zip tie the top up and give it a really good shake about. That also works a treat.

You could always put your bucket in the tumble dryer on the cool setting, and tell the missus you are doing the washing whilst making your bait...boilies and brownie points

Compost tumblers. The type set on a small frame with a handle to turn it.
