Hi All,

Is there actually much point going to lengths of crumbing up boilie especially as there are lots of roach / rudd and bream in the lake?

I see guys doing it but the lakes has loads of smaller fish so I just imagine half of it has gone before it even hits the bottom!

Also would a dedicated groundbait to match the boilie not be a better option anyway?

I watch Rudd eating crumb in seconds on my lake. I now prefer to cut an 18-20mm boilie into quarters

It's not a tactic to use if lots of silvers are present unless you want a bit of fish action in the swim to attract the carp. I'd just put some in at the start then bait with bigger items. If there are no silvers then it's more worthwhile, bear in mind depth and undertow also. A lot of either will render crumb pretty pointless.

This is a problem in the lake I fish as it's 35ft deep. The way I get round it is just to make up mesh bags with something heavy in to get to the bottom quickly.

Yep you are right , most of it will get smashed by the pest fish. Its abit of a gimmick if you ask me. Spend all that money on boilies to smash them up into crumb to feed the roach. I think people just see the anglers who work for bait companies doing it and follow suit.

I have watched small silvers picking off the broken pieces of a crushed boilie as it drops through the water. Crumb was a complete waste of time on that water, it simply didn't last. Even small seeds in a particle mix were taken by the tiny roach.

If waters are that 'infested' with silver fish, then you are far better avoiding groundbaits at all, stick with larger baits, whole boilies (even halved or quartered baits will be attacked), or bigger particles.

It is a killer tactic on some venues but not all. When I crumb bait I always leave big chunks or put whole baits out too in case the silver fish are rife. But in winter I want that activity on my spots. Also it is a very good way to get hydro liquids down onto the lakebed as crumb is like a sponge. The other thing to remember is that 1kg of crumb can keep carp interested for hours where 1kg of whole baits may last 25 minutes. Don't be too dismissive of any tactic especially in cooler water.

It's all about the situations you find yourself in, if you can get on carp and feed them crumb they generally go mad for it, like Keeperboy said it has them rooting around for sometime and very aggressively.

I always start applying my boilies to new waters in this form, for me it's been the easiest and often quickest way of getting the fish to eat it.

I prefer to use particles to get liquids down and onto/into the substrate and will mix the crumb into these.

Agreed 100%. OK on shallow waters or those with very few nuisance fish, otherwise a waste of time and simply bream and Roach fodder.

sometimes crumb in winter can be contra productive. sometimes they dont want to spend energy to search for a little bit of crumb here and there. I prefer super fast dissolving or paste baits in that scenario.

I prefer to use half chopped so I double the amount of offerings and keep the other half whole.

Crumb boilie can be a deadly tactic but it depends on the stock levels

if silvers are feeding on crumb would you not expect the carp to look see what the fuss is about or simply put move in on a baited area
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
